Digilux 2 Board Petition

I think it's time to grant the Digilux 2 its own board on the Digital Forum.

The X1 and S2 aren't even available to users yet they've been granted prominent space for several months... and both cameras are still several months away from availability. But this is not the main reason there should be a Digilux 2 board.

There are users on this board that regardless of what other camera they shoot, they all continue to come back to the Digilux 2. In its own unique way, the Digilux 2 carries the banner as Leica's FIRST true serious entry into the digital market. And unlike all the early Canon, Nikon, Sony et al. early starters, the Digilux 2 continues to be serviceable and put to use... with stunning results, I might add.

Digilux 2 users number into the thousands. The camera has been part of the Leica family for over 5 years. It has earned its right as part of the Leica heritage and legacy. It's unique "philosophy" is unrivaled in the compact camera class and unlike Leica's other foray's into the point n' shoot market space, the Digilux 2 without question produces remarkable images worthy of the Leica name.

For what it's worth, the "Do Digilux 2 photos have distinctive look? " thread is now 27 pages long. It has over 500 posts AND more importantly, has been viewed over 43,000 times. 43 THOUSAND. Started in March of 2007, it has become a board unto itself.

Threads continue to get started and new owners appear all the time. And... this is the most important part... these owners and their Leica Digilux 2(s) continue to produce stunning LEICA images and praise the LEICA brand.

Certainly, having a board doesn't increase bandwidth usage or a depletion of resources. It's just a board. The posts are already here. Organizing them and giving users a place to discuss the camera won't cost anyone anything. And it will help NEW users find their way to the information (good information) from actual Digilux users.

Five year's on... thousands of owners, millions of Leica images... it's time.

The Digilux 2... or even Digilux "family" deserves a forum board.

Add your vote to this thread... and tell other's you know.

i agree that a separate D2 board, actually a D1 to D3 board, is a good idea for all your reasons, so i vote "yes" on this. (in fact the "big" thread has so many comments in it, things half-remembered are hard to find again.)

however .... it will be a major task to find and move every D* related topic written over the years .... that may be the killing detail to make this happen .... people have called it the Digilux2, D2, digilux-2, d2 .... and they get "tagged" under any subject (i don't think).

anyway, it will be a ton of work for someone, but "YES".

Actually, it's not at all. I own a couple of forums using this software. While it won't be 100% - a couple of searches will yield the majority of threads and they can simply be moved in bulk.

And you're correct about finding things.

as i found my love of this camera here and a lot of additional informations, that were very useful for me- i say a strong "yes". i became a new member of the leica-family with the digilux 2, then bought the dlux4 and i am very happy with both.

The forum could be filled up with sub forums for almost every single Leica camera ever produced.

Are you aware that there is a D2 users group within the 'community' section? This seems to provide the solution. Given that the D2 is a mature product now is there that much new to discuss about it I wonder, to warrant a new sub forum of its own?

I wasn't aware that a D2 Social Group existed.

My D2 sensor was replaced earlier this year and hadn't used it until lately. I thought the focus was off until I took this photo. The original has that D2 "look" and sharpness.

yes but the D2 subcategory under "community" is lost in a menu .... no-one posts there because it's buried .... all the D2 postings are now under "digital".

is it possible (and easy) to relocate the entire D2 users community directory to put it under "digital" and move all D* threads into it? ..... just so that it is as easy to see as the X1, S2, M9 pages.

even a "virtual link" under the "digital" forum heading might work for that.

also .... now that we are creating work for someone .... is it possible to have the writer of every new D* topic tag the topic as D* by clicking a button.... and that would always send it into the D* forum.

I agree with John Thawley. I look at this Leica forum only for the D2 / LC1 information. I am happy to see that so many of us still use the camera with great results. I have to confess that I am an LC1 and L1 owner and I have felt very welcomed by the Leica community. I have always admired Leica, but had a very big selection of Olympus OM gear [still have some] in my film days.

I love my LC1!! I like my L1. I would like to see a separate forum.

Some of the work the L1 has produced is just plain awesome.

Yes, I think it's obvious that the demand is there and recognizing that is long overdue. As I recall the bone that was thrown out before was the 'community forum' but as mentioned above, it's hidden and lost in a backwater.

Hopefully time for the Admin to reconsider.

i must "backpeddle" a little ....

i notice that there ARE tags used for the topics ..... down at the bottom of the digital forum page is a list of tags and if you click "digilux 2" it looks like it's bring up all topics on the D2.

i never noticed that feature before, and i am not sure how the tags get there, or if in fact they bring up EVERY D2 message ...????

Update:

YIKES ..... the tag feature is right there when you start a new topic ..... i gotta wake up !! .... but i guess it's not required, and 90% of the D2 postings are not tagged....

Tags can be placed into a thread by the original poster, in a field just below the text entry field.

If everyone used them, searching tags would be much more efficient.

I have alerted Andreas to this thread. The reason why some models have their own sub-sections is so that the really high traffic stuff gets set to one side from the slower lane posts.

It was never the intention to have any differentiation between models at all, until the M8 came along. All digital Leicas would be discussed in one sub-section, as happens in the film sub-section. However, with all of the problems that the M8 had at launch, anyone interested in anything other than an M8 couldn't get a look in on the digital cameras sub-section.

FWIW, having multiple sub-sections on the forum does increase the amount of time that Moderators have to spend keeping things in the correct sub-sectrion.

I have to agree and add my own "Yes!" to the chorus.

The Digilux line is an important one in establishing Leica's digital "name."

My LC1 continues to get used even after other cameras have come & gone - and my Digilux 3 is as flexible, venerable and impressive as always.

These aren't orphan cameras like the V-Lux (fortunately), or entry cameras like the C-Lux line. They're cameras that have been put to good, professional use since day one.

Andy

yes i just learned that today .... never knew what it meant before.

i even tried to go back and add a D2 & Digilux-2 tags to my old postings, but that apparently can't be done.

A search of "Threads" with Digilux 2 will bring up some 400 plus threads. Might not be perfect, but it's a start.

@ Andy: Is Leica still producing the M8?

Add my vote too!

The user group is not working for most users!

Do M8, M9, X1, .. have a users group?

The main drawback might be that the general digital forum will look empty without all those D2 posts :D
