Did you give up SLRs for Leica?

No way.

M9 is great but definitely needs FW improvements to become dependable.

In addition for me, Nikon D3 and D300 nicely complement the M9.

Use of the M9 is having an influence though in that I use the Nikons more deliberately and depend less on their automatic features.

I shot SLR's for years, Nikon in the film years (1985-2002) and early digital years (2002-2004), then Canon (2004-2009). I actually started about 1980 with a Pentax K-1000. The SLR is an incredibly versatile platform in a relatively compact package. There are few types of photography that you can't do with an SLR. That said, like most highly versatile tools, there are compromises. For example, while not big, SLRs aren't really small, either.

Over the last few years, I began to really settle into my own style of shooting. While I did some long telephoto shooting and some macro shooting, the reality is most of my shooting was from 24-85mm, and I didn't do any action photography. I travel a lot for work and love to take my camera--but this is where the SLR was a compromise: It was relatively big and bulky, especially if I wanted to take a couple of fast primes, as I love low-light photography. I came to realize that what I really wanted is the best image quality in the smallest package. After trying a variety of high-end P&S cameras, including the Sigma DP2 and an Olymps E-P1, I realized that the best thing out there for my style was an M.

So, I picked up an M8.2 about 8 months ago and haven't looked back. I have now dumped all of my SLR gear and have an M9. I have all the fast glass I can want, some of the best optics in the world and good high-ISO performance with the M9, all in an extremely small package. Because of my style of shooting, I don't think I will ever be back to an SLR as my primary platform.

No.

I still have a FM3a with 3 lenses and a D300 with a 100 macro only.

But I used them rarely, save the D300 + SF900 flash for some outdoor

shots.

So it's mainly R and M for me.

That said, I guess the new Zeiss Ikon ZF2 for Nikon I'll buy soon

will give my Nikons a fresh start. First portraits I saw with a ZF2 85 mm

are absolutely outstanding.

I love that this thread keeps going. After 7 months of M usage, I have picked up my D700 maybe twice or three times. I sold its most expensive lenses to buy a 35 Lux and it's left with a 50/1.4 AFS and a 70-300 that's in a friend's care for a while. now that the Nikon 24/1.4 is out, I'm tempted, but more than anything, I'm feeling like I'm kind of done taking it out in public. Nothing has been better for my own photography than feeling like I'm carrying a little, old discrete camera around and it's remarkable how little notice people take. More than lenses and focal lengths, high-ISO, film vs digital, carrying around something that doesn't look "pro" has given my work a real boost. I finally feel comfortable.

Well, actually I did, but with a caveat. I just bought a Nikon D700. I had a film SLR and got frustrated with film processing delays so I went for a D700 for my long lens and PC. Absolutely nothing will replace my M8 for walking around town, discrete photography. And it's still the one I reach for when I have to haul out suddenly. I still may have to sell it due to financial constraints, but for now I'm biting the bullet even though I'm about to sell my 35 Cron ASPH. Decisions, decisions...

Hi, I gave up a Nikon D300, 28-70mm zoom, 70-210mm zoom, 50mm, SB900, R1C1 flash unit, 105mm macro, All or which weighed a ton. I love my M8, use it all the time instead of it staying in the camera bag.

yes no zoom now, but i now use my legs and think about what i'm going to take a picture of. No macro (that I do miss) the poor close focus of leica lens is a drawback. But then I can use it in the street, at home, at parties without being in peoples faces.

I ony have three lens, 15mm, 40mm and 90mm. I use the 40 and 90 most and make use of the under rated leica 'lens carrier', which screws into the tripod socket on the baseplate. I also have a 24D flash, but do not use it very much.

I don't miss the DSLR and my back is feeling a lot better.

No I use and have used a number of SLR's over the past 30 odd years.(latest is a Sony)

I sold my 111a and my Bessa to help fund my M8. Filmwise I now use 120, Bronica or MPP 6x9 back (on 5x4 field camera) or 5x4 (HP5)

sold my D700, ZF lenses, fine Nikkors and bought a used, beaten M8 and a few new lenses (a zeiss and two CV). Everybody I spoke with about it said I am crazy :)

but then, it is just a hobby.

Yes, I used to be a Canon guy and gave it up for a Leica M. I was never a telephoto/macro user (my longest lens was an 85mm) and for my style and the way I work the switch was a no-brainer.

Cheers,

Excactly the same story with me. Sold all my Canon gear (5Dmkll and some L glass) and bought an M9 instead.

Regards, Jyrki

Yes, but not quite. I have used SLR's exclusively, until I recently bought an M5 and five lenses.

I am currently auctioning off my Nikon F3 and 9 Ais prime lenses, including the 20mm, 28mm and 105mm, all considered to be some of the best in the SLR field, but they are bulky and a problem to carry around.

There are absolutely no regrets changing over to the M and having fewer options, it is the experience that matters most, and also my images have a unique quality I didn't get before.

I am having a Pentax Mz5-n repaired as we speak to use as a back up.

I use my Nikon so scarcely, that I'm now thinking of selling it (which I've never thought would be the case ...). As I've acquired a Panasonic G1, the telephoto and occasional macro is covered, and the G1 is an almost perfect fit for the M in terms of footprint.

Cheers

Ivo

I use my M9 so scarcely, that I'm now trying to sell it.

My 550D (and G1) are superior in every respect (maybe except the last, marginal pixel from a DNG file)

Sold my D700 + lots of high end glass (zeiss 35/2, 105/2 DC, 300/4 AFS) and am now a happy M8 owner, along with elmarits, summicrons and friends.

I don't regret it at all, as I am a hobby photographer and I simply enjoy using the M8. It is a beautiful system for sure :)
