  1. Greetings, I am doing some research on buying a used M. I am not a pro, just a devotee since my father used them, and I can now afford it. I have 3 main questions surrounding purchasing a used Leica and I am thinking about buying a M-P (Typ 240). 1. Do reputable photo houses refurbish the camera's or send them to Leica for a certified-used designation? 2. Are there more reputable stories to purchase from? I am dubious about eBay. What about B&H in New York, Tamarkin seems overpriced with little inventory. Can anyone make recommendations? 3. What should I look for. Someone told at a photo store that Leica cannot provide the number of actuations. Is that right? I basically don't want to spend >$4000 on a something that has 100, 000 miles on it, so to speak. Thank you all for your feedback.
  2. Hi all, I would like to ask for your opinion on two Leica Qs that are for sale which I am interested on: Leica Q; Serial number 49733XX; Price 2700 €; Condition: New (with 0 shutter releases), expired Leica warranty, sold from a private person Leica Q; Serial number 5217XX; Price 2690 €; Condition: used, some used marks (shutter count unknown), expired Leica warranty; 1 year protection through second hand handler Which one would you recommend to buy? Does the low serial number on the new camera would be an issue? It was probable manufactured at the end of 2016. Thanks for your comments
  3. I've been using a second hand Leica R8 with a Digital Modul R for many years now. And as that system has got older I've periodically considered upgrading to something new. Although I've considered other brands I loved the DMR so much I really couldn't see myself getting a Nikon or Canon or Sony. I had my heart set on a Leica S but could never justify spending that kind of money even if I managed to scrape it together. However now there seems to be a fair number of used S cameras on the market. I can now get a used S2 for less than one fifth of the price it was new. Can anyone tell me what the drawbacks to buying an S2 NOW might be? I'm particularly concerned with servicing and battery availability. I don't want to find myself in the same position I was with the DMR with service and no new batteries. Please note that I'm set on getting a Leica. I'm just wanting advice on whether an S2 is a good option. Many thanks, Freggio
  4. I've recently acquired a very cheap 35mm Summicron v4 M in very good shape. However, the front and back elements are filled with dust (or fungus). The edges don't have any obvious fungus or anything. The are only specs here and there, but mostly in the center of the elements. What do you guys think? Is it dust or fungus? Here are some pictures:
  5. Dear Friends, I have just signed up, however I've been reading the forum for some time and finally came to a decision of buying the Q (I believe it will be a perfect addition to my Canon DSLR gear and DJI Phantom Drone). I was thinking about buying a new one, but now got an offer for a second hand from Leica Dealer. The only problem is that both age and shutter count are unknown. The camera must be older than 2 years as the Leica Warranty is expired. The price is 2900 euro. Do you think it is a fair price? All the tips welcome! Thank you for your time! Cheers, Adrian
  6. Leica camera sales over the past 10 years for map cameras. ・ Leica product sales ranking for 10 years (camera edition) Leica product 10-year sales ranking (new camera version) as of January 2023 1st Q2 2nd Q (Typ116) Black 3rd M10 black chrome 4th D-LUX7 Silver 5th M10-P Black Chrome 6th M (Typ240) black paint 7th D-LUX (Typ109) 8th SL2-S 9th M Monochrome Black Chrome 1 10th D-LUX7 Black Leica product 10-year sales ranking (used camera edition) as of January 2023 1st Q (Typ116) Black 2nd Q2 3rd M3 4th M (Typ240) black paint 5th M10 Black Chrome 6th M10-P Black Chrome 7th SL (Typ601) 8th M-P (Typ240) black paint 9th X Vario (Typ107) Black 10th M9 black paint The best-selling Leica camera in the past 10 years in map cameras is "Q2", and the second place is "Q", so the Q series sells more than the M series
  7. PRICING THOUGHTS & MARKET SIZE 10-2020 EXPANDING LEICA MARKET THROUGH PRICING ADJUSTMENTS Has Leica priced only for the super rich not the middle class or even worker-who-can-save? With M10's going USED at $4,5000 TO $5,500 most people can not afford them. Even used only the super rich can afford them. If they had sold the new M10's around $4,500, about $2,000 above the $2,500 that the Asian cameras sell for, then used the Leica would sell for $2,000 to $3,000 where many could afford them. Thus a used Leica's price would compete with new Asian camera prices. This would give Leica a double market to sell to, both new and used, and greater market penetration (more sales), and a reason to expand their repair department which is greatly needed. ECONOMIC SYSTEM PRICE POINT AND SIZE OF THE MARKET If you can sell the trade-in camera, then it is normally easier to sell a new camera, is it not? By hurting the trade-in used market with high priced used cameras, it must be harder to sell new $7,000 cameras. Since the used cameras are selling at $4,5000+ then it could only be to a few very rich people - thus used cameras compete with Leica's own new camera market. I realize it is not this simple but I am sure you get my point. Could Leica could end up like Pentax & Rollei? Leica might have a better "economic system", at a more reasonable new price and greater sales, with the accompanying better/larger repair department. The existing repair department could not fully fix my Tri-Elmar 28-35-50 lens. Is there demand at $3,500 to $4,500 new body price, for an M11? At $3,500 you would likely convert some new-camera Asian-camera buyers to new-camera Leica-camera buyers. That is about 40% more for a body than the Asian market can provide at $2,500. At $4,500+ you probably loose this convert. LOCAL SALES Probably due to this overpricing effect on both bodies and lenses, no camera store sells Leica in my home town. My town is in a CSA (combined statistical area) population of 1,096,961. Our top camera store told me years ago they could not carry a camera unless they could sell ONE a month, so they dropped Leica. Lower used prices would give camera stores something to sell profitably (selling new cameras is hardly profitable I am told) and keep them in business. TRADE-IN COMPETITION & PRICING Trade-ins are NOT reasonably priced, when they are priced above the price of new Asian cameras, cameras that frankly exceed the capabilities of any Leica. But of course the Asian cameras are a horror story of complexity to operate, so many users dislike them. Asian digital cameras remove the sense of being an artist and turn you into a technician. ALTERNATIVES & COLOR FEATURE As now priced, Leica sends me to Panasonic S1, S1-R, S1-H or better yet Nikon Z6, Z7 which has very very close to the Leica-Euro color hues when using old Leica lenses as reports show with pictures. Sadly with M10-R the Leica-Euro-Color may be lost in order to extend the dynamic range of the smaller pixel sensor? Why not give a Euro-Color Leica-Look check box in the menus to select this color saturation level and loose the one or one-half stop of brightness that is needed to achieve it? As long as the dark areas go black, and not to Noise, then it would be acceptable for many users. Please take my comments as a hope for an expanded Leica market. I also realize, that the market resolves all issues, and has a sort of fairness all its own that we must submit to. I do enjoy the economic study.
  8. Hi, I am new here in the forum since I have been infected by the M9 fever, after a quick test at my retailers store. I have an offer for two lenses both used. One, the f/2 28 Summicron apsh. is round about 6 years old Number two is about 15 years old, a f/2 50 Summicron What is each the max. price to pay for when it looks and "feels" like mint condition. Since I am not in an hurry to buy a new M9 I would like to chose my equipment with care. Please, professionals and experienced member give me advice what such lenses are worth to pay for. Thank you in advance!
  9. Hi, I'm going to be getting my first Leica (a used M6) from Red Dot cameras on wednesday and was wondering how likely I'd be able to haggle and how much I could. I don't want to seem rude or our of place by offering below asking but Im on such a tight budget, even after begging and borrowing. Anyone had any experience? Sorry if this has already been covered or if im in the wrong place, still feel very new to the forum.
