Max
  2. Hello everyone! Just recently I came upon a wonderful set of the Leica IIIC together with 3 (seemingly in mint condition) lenses. The SN of the camera itself is 374588 and the only information I could gather is that it was manufactured in 1940. More about the lenses - elmar 3,5 cm, summitar 5cm, SN 559993, thambar 9cm SN 540124. There are some more additional bits and bops in the set. I tried to make my own research but couldn't find much on the internet. Can any of you, professional Leica users/keen fans let me know more about the history of these items? I am more curious other than anything.
  3. I have a 1936 IIIa (s.n. 184223) that is in need of a lens, and I am now in a position to purchase one. I am leaning towards an f3.5 Elmar, as I think it complements the design of the camera beautifully both in compactness and in general appearance. The other lenses that are possibilities look a bit heavier and some even a bit too modern (even though some of them are not) for an 85 year old camera. I do have some points that I would appreciate comments on from those who know more about things Leica than I do, before I part with my cash. Firstly, condition. Quite a few lenses of this age have either dust or haze in the optics, and others have light marks. Would I be correct in assuming that dust or haze (provided the haze is not excessive) could be fixed with a CLA, as could a stiff aperture ring or focusing ring, but marks would generally not go away? Secondly, coatings. I see that, as a rule, Pre-War lenses are clear, and Post-War lenses are coated, and I understand the basic reasoning behind coating lenses is to cut down internal reflections but, in lenses of this quality, is there really much of a difference between the two? As for the lenses that I’m looking at: Elmar f3.5: My preferred option, as it is so light and compact and just looks so right on a Barnack Leica; Elmar f2.8: Aside from the extra f-stop, is there any reason for preferring this over the f3.5 Elmar? I find it does not have quite the same visual appeal as the f3.5 Elmar, but it could be useful in low light situations. Summar f2: Maybe another lens to consider. Again, not quite the same visual appeal as the f3.5 Elmar, but it could also be useful in low light situations. Summitar: From what I can see, it appears to be an updated and improved version of the Summar. Compared with the Elmar, and even the Summar, it looks a trifle bulky (yes, I know it isn’t really). Summicron: I’m not so keen on this one, as I find the appearance of the earlier lenses more appealing. I would also prefer to fit my camera with a lens that’s a bit closer to what it originally had. I have heard that the front element is made of an unusually soft glass, which means that these lenses are often badly scratched. Is this so? Thank you in advance for helping a newcomer to the world of Leicas.
  5. I own a summitar 5cm f 1.2 from the W.Haven batch can some one give me more information about this lens, now I use it every day I am a fine art professional thanks ruchky
  6. Hello, This is my first post here.. UPS just dropped a Leica IIIc in my lap today I already got a Summitar 2/50 a couple days ago. The camera works fine, just a bit stiff and the slow speeds seems a bit, well, slow.. The ghost image in the viewfinder is barely visible. It needs a CLA, but what a great camera! Weighs a ton for it's small size! I live in Sarasota Florida; used to work as a photographer for a daily newspaper in the late 80s. I never caught the digital bug and abandoned photography all together when those new electronic toys invaded.. Recently decided to get back to it, and of course with film, and my first Leica. Gil.
  7. Another type of negative photography. Leuven, Belgium, iiif, Summitar 50, Fomapan 100, Fomadon LQN Thanks for looking!
  8. Hello all: I just purchased a 50 mm f2.0 Summitar in Leica screw mount and will be using it on my Ms with a LTM to M adaptor ring. I just did that. The strange thing is that when I mounted the combo on an M (in fact, a CL, as it was just within immediate reach of my hand), the focus reference mark on the lens mount is about 20 degrees to the left of the vertical position (looking from above), while the aperture reference dot is at 0 degrees (right on top). Strange! Oh, the LTM to M adaptor ring is a genuine Leitz Wetzlar 50 mm ring. Any ideas? Thank you in advance. Guy
Wolf
  10. I am using a 1954 Summitar 5cm f2 lens on my M6 with a screw mount to M mount adaptor. As carefully as I try to focus nothing seems sharp on my negatives at all f stops. Could there be a problem with the adapter? Should I just use M mount lenses.
  11. YES! Leica says that the Elmar-M can safely be collapsed in the M9, and I have been collapsing mine without any problem. So I compared the Elmar-M and the Summitar (SM, with an M ring). The diameter of the inner end of both lens tubes seems to be the same. The collapsed Summitar does not penetrate as deeply into the body as the Elmar-M. So I tried it, and the M9 came through unscated! So, yes, the Summitar can be collapsed safely into the M9. Of course, always mount and dismount all collapsible lenses extended. Guy
  12. I'm ready to buy a 35mm lens for my M9 if and when they become available again. I am somewhat mystified, though, about the many comments about the latest Summicron being unsuited for the M9 because of it's higher contrast. I would love to see some side-by-side comparisons between the 35mm Summicron-Asph and the 35m Summicron (which seems to be universally praised in this forum).
  14. Hello all: I am beginning to explore the world of old and older Leitz lenses for my M cameras. I recently purchased a 1935 50mm f3.5 Elmar (uncoated LTM, used with a LTM to M adapter ring) and just got a 1955 50mm f2.0 LTM Summitar (again, LTM with LTM to M adapter). I just saw a SOOTF adapter for sale, advertised as allowing the use of filters for the Summitar on the Elmar. Is that so? Also, can "swing-out" polarizing filters be used on the Summitar? I have one for my Summicron (V3) and another for my Summilux (V1 - 1959). Were any made for the Summitar? Thanks to all of you for your help. Guy
Offenes Fenster: Kleiner Beginenhof: Hausabdruck: Danke fürs Anschauen!
