  1. WIDE OPEN ONLY! Please post the images of the amazing original Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH at Peter Karbe's favorite f-stop: wide open.
  2. We already have a very extensive 'Mandler Magic' topic, but as much I am keen on Mandler's signature look and his contribution to the "Leica glow", there is another very distinguished gentleman in the 'House of Leica' that as a leader of Leica's optical design team since 2002 gave us a bunch of new high performance M-Lenses and pushed the terms FLE, ASPH and APO towards modern Leica perfection. He was the guy that had the balls to say Dr. Mandler's 75mm Summilux 1.4 was his *least* favorite design and went on to "Make Summilux great again" - all the way down to 21mm. Show us some of the "clinical look" of the Peter Karbe magic and do tell what lens he designed is your favorite...
  3. This awesome 21mm lens with f/1.4 f-stop totally deserves its own thread. The popularity of fast wide M lenses among Leica photographers seems to drop as soon as one drifts away from the optical viewfinder lines of the eternal 28mm / 35mm / 50mm trinity. Leica even went as far as to discontinue its entire 24mm M line of lenses at some point in 2020, including the precious Summilux 24. Yet for reportage, conventions, events, concerts, wedding receptions and people photography, a fast wide angle is usually priceless. What the Summilux 21 f/1.4 offers over other slower (f/1.8 to f/3.4) lenses from the 21mm scuderia (there are not many for the M, although Voigtlander and TTArtisan offer direct competition with same or very similar f-stop) is the incredible separation of the subject from the background, an amazing feature for a wide angle lens. The 21 lux is of course a Karbe masterpiece, Erwin Puts even said in one of his articles that "If you compare the 1.4/21 with the 0.95/50mm you see comparable quality." Please post your images and share your experience with the 21 lux - everything from series VIII/8 filters and other adapted filter solutions to your experience with this light beast in the field and on assignments, preferrably wide open. This is NOT a SEM thread, but a comparison between the two is OK.
  4. As Leica increasingly rolls out new lens designs that focus closer than 0.7m, I figured it would be a good time to start a thread featuring images taken with these lenses. Please upload photos taken with Leica-branded M lenses with a native minimum focusing distances less than 0.7m (e.g. 35 Lux FLE II, 50 Lux Asph II, 35 APO, etc.). Images featured here should be taken at a distance less than 0.7m. Please let us know what lens you used! I'll start us off with a few taken with the 50 Lux Asph II with an M10
  5. I have recently purchased a used 75mm Summilux f/1.4 which has an issue with back focusing. I did some tests today, and from minimum focusing distance to about 1.5 meters, the focus is very good. Then the back focusing is more and more visible at longer distances. At 2 meters the focus is about 5 cm behind, and at 3 meters it back focuses maybe 30 cm. I can't see any difference at different apertures. What is the best thing to do? Send it to Leica for an adjustment? Do they need the camera as well? (hope not). Or should I just find a way to live with it, e.g. try to remember how much nearer I have to focus at different distances? I have planned to buy a Visoflex, but currently I can't afford it.
  6. Hi everyone, I just purchased this lens to shoot on both film and digital, I read forum posts and reviews online, but there's way more information on the V2 / V3 than the V1, which makes sense since this lens only lasted two years so not a lot of people out there actually using it I guess? I mostly bought this lens to shoot portraits and complement my favorite lens of all time, the summicron 35mm 8 elements (also a v1 lens :p). I tried the 50mm summilux asph and pre-asph v2/v3 but didn't enjoy the rendering of the pre-asph v2/v3 that much, nor the size of the asph. I think I've tried all 50s that Leica has made, and my favorite is the first Summicron collapsible, so by now I guess you can figure out I really like Leica's rendering from the 50s (and it also seems I have a thing for v1 lenses...) What do you think of this lens if you own it or have used one before? How's the performance at F1.4~F2, and also a bit closed down at F4~F8? Do you still shoot with it nowadays? If so, would love to hear your thoughts on it Thanks and to a 2020 with lots of great memories to be captured!
  7. The Karbe Lux masterpiece is finally getting a facelift. 11 blades, 45cm close focus, rumored performance tweaks, same ol’ price. (Rumor has it it will be announced next week).
  8. Apologize to post this late, I was member since 2012 and till recently found my password and login 😅 I wanted to share one of my photograph that won 2nd place the National geographic Travel of he Year 2017 in people category. I shot using Leica ME with 50mm Lux, at Rijks Museum in Amsterdam way back in 2015. I shot twice and the first one obviousely out of focus due to the manual setting, etc.. but the second shot was perfect. I love the visitors expression and lighting that really help this image stand out. I named this shot "Interesting Moment" 😃 Love my ME and the 50mm Lux combination, I never change lens since.
  9. I'm thinking of selling my summilux 50 and summilux 35 (both last ver) in order of getting a new 50 noctilux. What do you think? 1.i still need to add money 2.i will stay with one lens
  10. I just wanted to verify if focus shift is a design flaw on 24mm Lux or something it can be fixed by adjustment. Since this lens has forgiving depth of field so the focus shift will only noticeable at the following conditions.... 1) at close subjects that's less than 1.5 meters, please set yours at 0.7 meter on the barrel to test. (don't push all the way, some lenses might go below 0.7m that your viewfinder doesn't) 2) provided your lens and camera are perfectly calibrated, which supposed to be no issue wide open at f/1.4 at any range. The focus shift will happen started from half click increment. Greater than f/2.8 will stop seeing focus shift just simply becoz this lens has very wide DOF. I use this lens for close subject intensively so please don't tell me how to use it or how you use it -- thank you in advance. I start noticing all my pictures are out of focus between 0.7 to 2m when aperture is set to f/2 plus or minus half stop. So I did a test at home to confirm my copy does have focus shift between f/1.8, f/2 and f/2.4 (I include half click). My lens @f/1.4 is perfect at any range, every click closing (not step) will result in two inches back focus, @f/2 is worst at about 5 inches total. Beyond that range like f/2.8 is fine, it starts to recover a wide range of DOF - some called it zone focusing. If it's not a design flaw, then I need to speak to a Leica technician who is going to fix this lens. Thank you very much.
  11. I am purchasing my first Leica! The M10-p. I was wondering which lens should I go with (current version brand new), the 35mm Summilux or 35mm Summicron. I do not consider the $ what so ever. Why go with one over the other? Is the Summilux strictly better but a matter of $$? Mostly street & reportage-style photography
  12. Hi! My Leica M10 and some lenses got stolen yesterday in Gothenburg. If anyone sees them, I would be grateful. To moderator, if this is the wrong place to post, please move it. In the bag was: 3824764 Leica Elmarit-M 90 4081227 Leica Elmar-24-M 4112250 Leica Summilux 35 ASPH 5152626 Leica M10 Black Leica E46 filterx2 (on the lenses) Leica M10 Battery Charger for Leica M10 HP Zbook 2017 I will also report to Leica. 13. As a photographer, wedding life is many things. Shots of a different type are in abundance. Leica M10+Summilux 35mm, Houston, Texas
  14. Hi to everyone here, I currently owned M6 and MP (type 240) by nature, i usually like shooting at 35 mm focal length. I am aiming to upgrade my summicron asph to a summilux which 35mm summilux lens will be the ‘one lens’that would fit with my two camera bodies?(digital and film) I will be studying abroad( in edinburgh), so i would like to hear thoughts and comments from fellow experienced users in this forum. Thank you
  15. I am considering buying a 35 Summilux preasph but have been considering also the 35 Nokton 1.4 from Voigtlander as it comes at a fraction of the price. My main question is whether the Nokton also has that same magic glow at f1.4 as the Summilux preasph. Anyone?
  16. I just got my black chrome 50mm Summilux ASPH (11688). As a number of people who have received their lens have pointed out in this thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/242441-new-35-cron-and-50-lux-available-in-black-chrome/, the hood won't fit over numerous E43 filters people have tried. I tried with my Carl Zeiss E43 UVa filter, which attaches to the lens just fine, and in this case the hood also won't fit. I thought I would illustrate the problem for two reasons: 1. As a warning, should this affect any purchase decisions. It would seem a normal E43 filter and the supplied hood cannot be used at the same time. But also... 2. to solicit advice from people less mechanically-challenged than me! Perhaps I'm just not doing this right, and there is actually a solution. Please help! Okay, here are the pictures to illustrate this problem - Note the female groove at the top of the lens barrel. The hood has squeeze tabs to pull these grips flush with the lens. The hood has a male groove that stops the hood being lowered any further than this groove. Releasing the tabs moves the grips back out and they clamp onto the female groove on the lens. Attaching this filter (and I presume many others) does not cause a problem with the overall circumference to clear. This one is perfectly flush with the lens barrel. Here is the hood affixed without the filter. Note the height. Here is the hood affixed with the filter. The extra height created by the filter prevents the grips from reaching the female groove on the lens barrel. It has no grip at all really and would come off at the slightest bump. The issue then is one of height. I'm not sure if any filter will be thin enough to avoid this problem. Thoughts...? What am I missing here?
  17. Hello, I was shooting the other day, and noticed when i tried to focus on some towers (miles away from Brooklyn) on my M240/50 Lux ASPH at infinity the double images are ever so slightly off. even the focus peaking was not on the spot. When i tried with another lens, the double image were ok ! so i believe the lens need to be readjusted for infinity ? if so should i sent to leica or there are other reputable place in the US that can do it quicker...? Thanks for your help ! Best Vadim

  19. Hi All, I'm a bit new here or rather I've lurked here for a very long time without posting. I've tried searching a bit, but I can't seem to find anything on the specific question I have or perhaps I'm searching poorly I currently have a chrome 50mm Summilux pre-asph that I am using on a M3 and M7, but as it's well documented this lens has a bit of a classic look to its rendering and at times lacks the micro contrast and corner sharpness of modern designs and do love the look of the lens. The classic rendering is a big part of why I haven't upgraded to an ASPH version. I do a lot of portraiture and this look is very forgiving in that scenario. I've used this lens for about 3 years now so I feel pretty comfortable with its look overall. That being said, there are quite a few occasions where I would like a bit more of a modern rendering. I think I like the modern rending for a lot of the non portrait everyday type uses. So I am wondering if there are any users here who currently field a pre asph summilux and an additional 50mm lens as a complement in other situations. I am seriously considering the 50mm summarit 2.4 as my second lens. I have heard that it has a way of rendering that is a bit classic and modern at the same time and has a smaller footprint. Does anyone an opinion on using the older lux and summarit as a sibling lens? For reference I have also used the 50mm DR summicron(Loved the handling and sharpness, but it was similarly classic to my summilux) and the 50mm Zeiss Planar f/2(liked the lens, but didn't care for the handling) Thanks so much!
  20. Hi all, apologies if this topic has already been covered (I couldn't find any direct comparisons). I'm new to the rangefinder universe, I finally took the plunge this week and invested in an M10 with a 50 ASPH lux. I'm looking for a (preferably fast) wider companion and interested in hearing from people with experience of both the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 and the Summilux 35mm 1.4 - what have your experiences been, are there any advantages/disadvantages of one over the other (I know the Zeiss is bigger), which do you prefer? I don't mind sacrificing reduced weight and size for superior image quality, I'm already loving the feel of the 50 lux's files and want to keep that micro-contrasty Leica vibe. I know these things are subjective, opinions welcome! Thanks in advance! Chris
  21. Hi everybody, i just got my summilux 35 fle this week. and i'm having difficulties comparing these two lenses. i'm sorry if my writing is not good and my sample picture are very crappy but this is only a test. i just want to share my experience with these lenses Please checkout this link first in flickr to see in high resolution. https://flic.kr/s/aHskP24eFN from my observation in couple days for brief moment, comparing side by side in lightroom, i really impressed with the voigtlander 35mm f1.7 ultron. Sharpness at the center the ultron beat the summilux on sharpness wide open. (f1.7 vs f1.4) but summilux beat the ultron at the same aperture f1.7 but not by much though Bokeh both have beautiful bokeh. sometimes i can't tell which is which. Contrast summilux has more contrast, but only a hair saturation summilux has more saturation but only like 3-5% i think size the Lux with the hood and the ultron without the hood is about the same size. i never use the hood on ultron since i bought it. it resist the flare very good. and it looks nicer. the ultron is slimmer than lux and lighter than the lux rendering both lens render is quite the same also. Now, the difference visible in my eye is curvature of the lens the summilux has center curvature that makes the subject on the center pop. ( i think this is the way leica did to make 3d pop) i can notice the size of a subject side by side with the voigtlander. the subject at the center is bigger on summilux than voigtlander. certainly the plane focus is not flat overall ultron is only 5-10% to catch up the FLE i would say. so in the end, i still finding the reason to keep this lens since the lens is 4x the cost of the ultron.
  22. Hello fellow forum members, I've written a article about the Summilux-R 80mm lens, and how it performs on the R8, and on the M (Typ 240) with R-M adapter, and EVF2. You can read it here: Summilux-R 80 on the Leica R8 and M (Typ 240) | Jip van Kuijk Here are two preview shots but there is plenty more in the article itself:
  23. I've found a good deal on a pre-asph 50 lux 1.4 (43). From what I understand, the 46 is optically the same as well. I was looking for some examples to evaluate sharpness wide open. I know the ASPH is where the sharp end is, but it's not in the budget, sadly. I'm just curious as to how sharp (or not sharp) the 43 version of the 50 lux is. I have the 50 Planar f/2 which I like, but I'm looking for something with a bit more low-light flexibility. I know the 50 lux won't compete wide-open in the sharpness department, I'm just curious how far off it is. I've searched through flickr, but it's a crapshoot with all the differently coded lenses, so if anyone has some example shots I could look at (bonus points for higher resolution, so I can peep a bit) I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
  24. Case in point. The first shot was my test shot to fix exposure and focus for the second shot of a pair of lovely twins enjoying Sushi in downtown Manhattan. Had no idea or care what I was doing in the first test shot. BUT I ACTUALLY LIKE IT BETTER. Nothing earth shattering, of course. But the layers of people remind me of a random stream of consciousness. The second shot is ok, but I ruin it. MM/50mm lux asph
