  3. Hi everyone, I own a Summicron 50mm V2 DR and Type 1. I know the lens head should be detachable from the focusing mechanism in order to mount on bellows. This works correctly on the Type 1, but on the DR, when I turn the lens head, only the section housing the front elements rotates, thus revealing the aperture blades inside once removed, instead of detaching all elements in one block. I could try bypassing this section by rotating the aperture ring, but this feels unsafe as rotating the ring with force might damage the blades inside. I hope I've explained this clearly enough - not sure if anyone has a solution? I'm trying to remove the lens head on both lenses in order to swap them out, since the DR optics are cleaner but I prefer the size of the Type 1. (P.S. I'm not the type to attempt lens repair/cleaning myself, but this is a function built into the lens by Leica) Thanks in advance
  4. In a recent interview in Austrian Der Standard Peter Karbe was asked which camera and lens would be his preferred choice. The answer was "not an easy one", but it would be M11 and APO-Summicron 35. "STANDARD: One last question: If you had to choose a combo, what would be your camera and your lens of choice? Karbe: The M11 and APO-Summicron 35mm. But that's one of those questions... which of your children do you like best? If I had to choose, I would use this combination." Here is the link to the full (unlocked) Peter Karbe Der Standard interview (in German) by Mickey Manakas, where he speaks about the compromise in building the Noctilux f/0.95 and its evident flaws, the "Leica Look" myth, his views on smartphone photography, his pride in personally calculating the optical formula for Summilux 50 ASPH and many other cool topics: https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000144541043/leitender-optikexperte-bei-leica-wir-waren-vorreiter-bei-der-digitalisierung

Danke, David
  8. Hello everybody Currently Im considering buying a 90mm M Lens. I tried the LEICA 90mm 2.8 ELMARIT M, which handles great (size and weight). The optical performance is fine. Does anybody know a comparison, review or something like it, between the LEICA 90mm 2.8 ELMARIT M and the VoigtlΓ€nder 90MM 2.9 APO SKOPAR VM ? I wonder if the VoigtlΓ€nder is optically that much better, since I tend to prefer the build of the leica 90 elmarit. The LEICA 90mm f/2 ASPH APO-SUMMICRON-M and the LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M are also contenders, yet I think the 90 APO summicron would be to large and heavy for my taste. the LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M is totally unknown to me. Does anybody know a direct comparison between the 90mm M lenses, particularly the ones I mentioned? Or a recommendation ? kind regards
  9. Hi, does somebody own a Leica Summicron-M 1:2/28 Edition "Safari" or has seen real life pictures? I’d love to see additional pictures of the lens except the one official photography that’s spread all over the web.
  10. Please post your images at closest focus made with this Karbe gem, the 75mm f2 APO Summicron-M ASPH. It apparently has a similar reproduction ratio (highest at 1:7) to the new close focus Summilux 50 ASPH II 2023 (highest at 1:6.4). I am especially interested in your images with humans (portraits, sensual nudes, whatever you do), but any other subject at close focus will also do fine. Please no 75 lux or 75 Summarit or 75 SL.
  11. Hi everyone, I recently acquired a 50mm Summicron V5 for a pretty good price. I'm loving the performance but am not a fan of the retractable hood and lack of a focusing tab. Because of this I'm considering switching to a V4, which is optically identical but addresses these points. My only concern is for the supposed use of plastic parts in the V4, which I have not heard mentioned in relation to the V5. Is it true that plastic was used in the V4? If so, for which parts? Does the V5 also contain plastic (seems odd to switch to plastic for one generation, then revert back in the next)? I'm also wondering whether the focus tab is plastic, as seems to be the case for all modern Leica lenses. Thanks in advance.
  12. Could not believe there was no thread for images made with Summicron 35 ASPHERICAL V1 and ASPHERICAL V2 (also known as Summicron V5 and V6). So here it is. Please indicate whether you used ASPH V1 or ASPH V2 and what camera. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do NOT post any PRE-ASPH Summicron V1 and V2 images and NO APO Summicron V7 images - the latter has its own thread here. Summicron 35 ASPH V1 and M10-R.
  13. We've all heard of that college student who bought an M2 for 5$ in a thift shop. I've never got such a deal but I've managed to get Leica equipment for low prices in the past. Such as a very clean M2 that I got in an eBay auction for 600$CAD. The shutter speed had to be adjusted, and the vulcanite had to be replaced. Other than that, it is in excellent condition. I later got an M262, which I also bought on eBay, for about 3500$CAD. The sensor was filled with dust and oil spots, and the focusing mechanism had to be lubricated two days after I recieved it. (Those problems where not specified by the seller) It looked like new back then, but after about six months of use, I've got some paint removed on the corners and a cut in the faux leather. It has been faithfull ever since. Then, yesterday, I looked for a replacement for my 35mm ZM 2.8 on the internet and ended up looking for pre-ASPH summicrons. I then stumbled uppon a 35mm Summicron on keh.com for 1080$USD. No picture of the actual lens was shown and generic pictures of a Type 4 where shown instead. It was listed as "UG" (ugly). Giving this extremely low price and the 180 day warranty offered by keh, I jumped on it. (I'll keep you guys updated on this purchase.) What are the good deals you guys managed to get on Leica equipment?
  14. someone had posted a pic online, of a summicron 50mm compur version, but i couldn't see it in the LUF wiki..just curious about the lens..anyone know more about it?
  15. Hey dear Leica community, I recently got two offers for two Leica cameras. The first one is a Leicaflex (The original one, no TTL) with a Summicron 50mm f/2 (V1) and the second offer was a Leica R4 with a 35-70 f/3.5. I even got an offer for a Leica R3 (Made in Germany!) for around the same price. All cameras (inculding the lens) are somewhere from 250€ - 300€ (245$-290$) Which one should I buy, I am very new to the Leica world, since I mainly used Nikon yet. Or should i sell my whole Nikon System to get a Leica M camera? Greetings from Germany
  16. Dear Friends: In the late 80's (when I was a kid) my father taught me how to use the Leica R4. I use the M-system these days but for last few weeks I have been wanting to make a comeback to film photography. I recently bought a used R4 with Summicron-R 50 mm lens. The lens looks great (I tested on Leica M10 with adapter). However, when I got the negatives developed and scanned, something strange showed up in the photographs. I am attaching a few examples. Can someone with an experienced eye help me figure out what is going on so that I can fix this problem! Your help is appreciated.
  17. Hi, i love my 35mm Summicron v2 (1970) but since i had to take pictures at my brothers wedding i bought the 35mm Summarit 2.5 second hand to have a lens that is more predictable than the Summicron. You can't beat the Summicrons handling and built quality in my opinion. I really love the Summicron on my M6, but on my M240 it is pretty unpredictable. Sometimes you get glowy edges / highlights, sometimes not. I didn't want to risk anything especially with the brides white wedding dress. The center is sharp on the Summicron, the corners and even the area around the center are / is pretty soft even at F8. Vignetting is kinda strong but this doesn't bother me. Backlight is it's biggest enemy - you can’t take pictures facing the sun because the whole image is gonna get completely white. The Summarit is an aspherical lens even if it wasn't marketed this way by Leica. Corners are sharp, not much vignetting and the focus throw is the shortest i've ever seen. It is only a 2.5 lens versus the Summicrons 2.0 (a half stop) but the subject isolation seems to be quite the same between the two lenses. I did a little comparison because maybe somebody is interested in buying a Leica lens in this price range. The Summarit costs about 1200€-1300€, just like the Summicron v2. The size and speed is almost the same, so in my eyes these two are pretty comparable in some aspects - even if they are almost 40 years apart. If you compare the images the Summicron looks pretty bad like it had some kind of cheap plastic lenses. The rendering is way different (Summarit warm, Summicron pretty cool). I’m using Mastin Labs presets in capture one and i really do like the Summicron images because the look some kind of analog. I can’t keep both lenses so i have to decide which one has to go. Summicron pro: - small - f2 - sharp in the center - a lot of character - 52 years old - it’s a Summicron, a piece of history and i own it now for almost 10 years Summicron con: - sometimes glowy - pretty bad with backlight / flares - sometimes β€ždullβ€œ images Summarit pro: - sharp in the center and the corners - super fast focus throw - very nice flaring while shooting backlight scenes, you can shoot straight into the sun Summarit con: - f2.4 - images look really clean, maybe too clean - way less charakter I’ve considered selling them both including my 50mm Summicron v4 and getting a 35mm Summicron v4 to get the best compromise. Small, fast, maybe sharp corners, classic look - i don’t know about flaring and leica glow. The version 2 glow is the biggest issue in my eyes - what do you think? Here’s the link to the flickr-album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/blacksciencelabs/albums/72177720301530475 (I hope it is okay to post a flickr link)
  18. Will it even be able to resolve to 60megapixels? Does anyone have any experience with this?
  19. I recently came across a decent Summicron 35mm lens that looks very much like Germany-made Summicron 35 V4, but the serial number range does not add up. So I'm looking for the community help confirming the exact version. Serial number of the item in question: 3456850 Serial number ranges from public sources (kenrockwell, reddotcamera) are close, but not quite: 3453071 - 3454070 Summicron-M 3.5 cm 1:2 (black.ELW) 1987 3456871 - 3457370 Summicron-M 3.5 cm 1:2 (black) 1988 Reddotcamera Serial Number lookup tool identifies this one as Elmarit-M 21mm f/2.8, build in the year 1988, which is really weird. Any advice will be very helpful!
  20. Cleaning my archives & found the legendary FoMag Second Hand Guide (distributed by the popular German magazine Foto Magazin) from exactly 20 years ago (August 2002). Adding the facsimile of the relevant pages πŸ˜‰ that will surely be of interest in comparison to 2022. All prices are in euros.
  21. I have just purchased a pair of goggles for my Summicron 50mm DR. When mounted and the lens set to close focusing range there is significant vertical misalignment of the range finder patch. Does anyone have any experience of such an issue? Is this something that can be repaired, or should I return the goggles to the seller while I still can? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
  22. Hi, A couple of years ago, I bought a 50 mm Summicron V5 (seconhand) to use with my M240. I acknowledge that this is a classic and a highly revered lens and I do like it in many ways. But, I am struggling a lot with low contrast and kind of 'milky' / flat images in many situations when the light is coming from different angles outside the frame. As far as I understand, this is a normal behavior with this specific lens. And I truly admire those, who are able to work their way around it and use it creatively. However, many times I don't have the opportunity to recompose / avoid these specific lightning situations. And personally, I don't like this effect on the images. My question is: Can you recommend another Leica 50 mm lens that would keep the contrast better in these situations? Maybe another version of the Summicron or maybe the Summilux ASPH? Or do they all behave the same way with regards to flare/low contrast in these specific situations? If this has already been discussed elsewhere, I apologize in advance. Thanks.
  23. There is a new lens in town. This design variant of the Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. features a matte black finish and light green engravings. It has an integrated lens hood which extends via quick twist. The EU price is €4,300.00, just 50 euros more than the regular black anodized version. 25. I'm not sure whether I've had bad luck with getting lenses to fit on cameras, or if this is a common problem with the M system. My first Leica combo was an M3 SS with Summicron 50 V2. Since the body and lens shipped together, there was no problem getting them to mount. Next, I purchased an Ultron 28 f2. The lens fit into the mount, but I couldn't get it to click into place. Took it to a repair shop, and the owner basically got the lens to fit through brute force - said Voigtlander QC wasn't great and that this was basically to be expected. I used the lens like this for a couple of months, but it would often "unclick" itself somehow, so I eventually traded it for a LTM Skopar 28mm. Same thing happened with the first adapter - couldn't get it it to click in place. Went back to the shop, and was given a replacement that 'magically' worked without problems. Recently, I traded the M3 for an M4-P and, lo and behold, neither the adapted Voigtlander nor Summicron will even fit into the mount, let alone click. Thus out of 6 total Lens/body combos (2 bodies and 4 lenses/adapters), 4 have been faulty. I'd simply put it down to a service error or wear and tear, but the fact that this has occurred between unrelated lenses and bodies makes me skeptical. Has anyone had a similar experience? Am I doing something wrong?!
