  2. Hi everyone, I own a Summicron 50mm V2 DR and Type 1. I know the lens head should be detachable from the focusing mechanism in order to mount on bellows. This works correctly on the Type 1, but on the DR, when I turn the lens head, only the section housing the front elements rotates, thus revealing the aperture blades inside once removed, instead of detaching all elements in one block. I could try bypassing this section by rotating the aperture ring, but this feels unsafe as rotating the ring with force might damage the blades inside. I hope I've explained this clearly enough - not sure if anyone has a solution? I'm trying to remove the lens head on both lenses in order to swap them out, since the DR optics are cleaner but I prefer the size of the Type 1. (P.S. I'm not the type to attempt lens repair/cleaning myself, but this is a function built into the lens by Leica) Thanks in advance
  3. In a recent interview in Austrian Der Standard Peter Karbe was asked which camera and lens would be his preferred choice. The answer was "not an easy one", but it would be M11 and APO-Summicron 35. "STANDARD: One last question: If you had to choose a combo, what would be your camera and your lens of choice? Karbe: The M11 and APO-Summicron 35mm. But that's one of those questions... which of your children do you like best? If I had to choose, I would use this combination." Here is the link to the full (unlocked) Peter Karbe Der Standard interview (in German) by Mickey Manakas, where he speaks about the compromise in building the Noctilux f/0.95 and its evident flaws, the "Leica Look" myth, his views on smartphone photography, his pride in personally calculating the optical formula for Summilux 50 ASPH and many other cool topics: https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000144541043/leitender-optikexperte-bei-leica-wir-waren-vorreiter-bei-der-digitalisierung

  6. Landscape of my region in autumn 2018. This belongs to my first series with my "new" Leica R3 and Summicron 50 mm. Kodak 200 scanned with Epson 850 V Pro.
  7. Hi all, I have the worst luck buying Leica gear. Just purchased my 2nd 50 Cron IV on eBay. The seller mentioned haze, and I asked a lot of questions about it, but he really described it as no big deal. Got it today and found a pretty harsh ring of haze (or?) when light is pushed through. Looks decent otherwise, but I paid a competitive price ($950 USD). I really don’t want to go through another eBay return—the seller only mentioned in a DM, where I was asking specific questions about the lens, that he would offer to return for me if I wasn’t happy. I’m a shooter, don’t mind imperfections, but I do like to have nice gear. Was thinking of sending out for a CLA and forget about it. Obviously another $100 that I don’t want to spend, but ugh. what do you guys think? edit: also the small set screws on the aperture ring show a small amount of rust. I was wondering if that might be a sign of what contributed to the optical issue, poor storage perhaps?
  8. Hello, I'm new to the forum and hope to get some help from all your combined years of expertise. I want to buy my first 50mm, have a 35mm Summilux on the M-10P. After obsessive days of research I've settled on the rigid 50mm Summicron because I want to make pictures with a softer look. This would be my first time buying used on ebay so I'm being cautious. The seller is LeitzUSA, anyone have experience with them? LeitzUSA says the original owner purchased the lens brand new in 1975, serial # 245XXX. According to a chart on Ken Rockwell's site the Summicron f/2 Rigid was in production 1956 - 1968. Just wondering about the difference of 7 years from end of production till the purchase year. Does that seem likely? Is this the real deal or a later version? It is supposed to come with cards, hood in original box. Thank you in advance!
  9. Hi, I have a 50mm summicron on an m4 body for film and was looking to pickup a digital body and adapter to use the lens on, I’m looking at the Fuji xpro 1 as it’s available cheaply and the form factor looks similar to my M4. Has anybody used an xpro with Leica m lens’s and if so how did they find the experience ? I’m not overly concerned about image quality as to be honest all digital raw files are easy to manipulate/work with. Other than the xpro there is the Sony Alpha range. Any info on this topic would be great, I have read through the topics on here but wanted an up to date assessment of the idea. thanks !
  10. Back in October when I bought my M10-P I also picked up a Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 but the call of the Summicron is loud and I quite fancy picking up a 50mm f2. I like the Voigtlander albeit I think it’s a bit bigger than ideal and weighty too. Wondering if a Summicron (v4 or v5) is really that ‘much better’ than the Voigtlander and if I’ll save save weight/size if I swapped over to one. Thoughts anyone?
  11. Hello All. I have a Summicron 28mm 2.0 Aspherical Lens. The model on the lens is "4068358" Does anyone have info about this specific version? Thanks, Michael
  12. I am purchasing my first Leica! The M10-p. I was wondering which lens should I go with (current version brand new), the 35mm Summilux or 35mm Summicron. I do not consider the $ what so ever. Why go with one over the other? Is the Summilux strictly better but a matter of $$? Mostly street & reportage-style photography
  13. Hey everyone, Looking for a bit of friendly advice and opinion. I currently have a Leica M-A and like to stick to the "One Camera, One Lens" method of keeping my work consistent and always improving. When people talk about this, one lens usually refers to focal length, not exactly one lens. After lots of trial and error I learned that I see in 50mm, so I prefer using that focal length for all of my shooting. However, I currently own a 50mm Summicron-M and a 50mm Elmar-M (both newest versions, both brass chrome). I can't decide if I should sell one, and if so which one, or keep both. The summicron is quite a bit heavier than the Elmar, although I wouldn't classify either as light since they are both the chrome versions. The Elmar obviously have a size advantage, but the annoyance of uneven aperture settings and the collapsible function can sometimes get annoying as it doesn't lock collapsed and can just slide out if positioned in such a way. I'm having a hard time deciding if it makes sense to keep both, and if not, which one to keep. I currently justify ownership of both by saying the Elmar, while limited, is more suitable for when I'm not out specifically to be shooting, but walking to work or just running errands. The smaller size is nice when I'm not focused specifically on shooting. I'll use the Summicron when I'm going out to shoot, as its usability is substantially better, at the cost of its size and weight, but when I'm shooting the camera is in my hand and not really packed away or even hanging from my neck. Let me know your thoughts everyone, interested to hear some opinions on the subject of owning multiple lenses of the same focal length. Thank you!
  14. This topic of 90mm lenses have been discussed many times I know. But I thought I should contribute too, with my own post and some findings. With my quest to get a Leica mount portrait lens for my Sony A7ii camera, I visited red dot cameras in London. I tried various lenses as below 1) 80 Lux-R (similar to 75 lux it is said) 2) 100/2.8 APO-R 3) 90 elmarit-m 4) 90 Summicron-m (non APO) 5) 90/4 macro elmar m I attach a collage of pictures (raw, unprocessed) made with maximum aperture of each lens, except number 2. Unfortunately, I did not like elmarit, you can see why from the attached picture. It feels too warm to me (bottom left). For me, I think the top left (80-lux) and top right (90 cron, non APO) have the best rendition; Lux for its dreamy magical look and the non APO for being very pleasant with good skin tones. macro elmar m (bottom right) is good too, but it won't achieve much separation with f4 over cron. I know this is a very limited set-up and these lenses will work differently outdoors. What do people think based on my attachment?
  15. Hello, I'm wondering if someone uses this lens on Leica Monochrom and can give me some advice. I was not happy with my Summicron 50mm collabsible on my Monochrom because of blury pics in the center. For those who wonder the front lens is in perfect condition. So I send it to Leica Service in Wetzlar. The repair would cost 520€. Now I'm wondering if someone can give me some example pictures of this lesns (in better shape) on the Monochrom, so that I can decide if I'll invest this amount of mony or if I save it for a later version of the Summicron. Thanks!
  16. Hello I have just taken ownership of an M9 and a Summicron 50mm f/2. I love the atmosphere and colour range of the first pictures but suspect that the sharpness of the focused area are below expectation for this wonderful lens. This is only noticeable at 100% crop. I find the outlines soft compared to examples I have found online and in print. I am aware of focus shift but just wanted to know how I should test if the lens is performing at optimum. I don't think I can share large images on this forum. Where should I look and who should I speak to? Any suggestions very welcome. Thanks William
  17. Hey, I went to Vietnam this summer and shot a series that was among other featured on the leica camera blog. You can check that out here: http://blog.leica-camera.com/2016/09/25/lounging-in-vietnam/ But of course I shot a lot more than just those few images in the series! So I still had a ton of photos from my trip to Vietnam buried in Lightroom. I haven’t posted any of them anywhere because I couldn’t really figure out how to arrange them in a story that would make any sense. Also most of these photos are a tad too touristy for my taste. But since I still really like them and can’t stand the thought of never showing them I decided to split them up into a couple of smaller sets and post them on my blog - of course fully aware that tumblr is pretty much dead these days. But hey, any place is better than the depths of my hard drive. All photo are taken with a Leica M6 and the 35mm Summicron IV on Kodak Portra 160 or 400. You can find some of the photo already on my blog and I will keep updating over the next few days. Blog: http://lifeon35.tumblr.com/
  18. I have ordered a black Leica M10 and have not received it yet. I also got a 2nd hand previous version 28mm summicron ASPH. I have read a lot of reviews that suggest this lens might have some issues with digital sensors like corner softness wide open. http://macfilos.com/photo/2016/5/24/leica-28mm-f2-summicron-asph-a-comparative-test This article by Jonathan Slack mentions that due to the presence of a special micro-lens design, special firmware profiles and a thinner cover glass over sensor in the M240, the performance of this lens with the newer iteration with M240 is very similar. I am not sure if this is the same with M10 or not. I wanted to know if any of you who have already received their M10, have tried it with this version of 28mm? Could you please provide your feed back on the same? Thanks in advance!
  19. I'd like to get a hood for my 50mm Summicron f/2 Type 2 - Rigid. The obvious option seems to be the 12585 metal vented hood. A few questions with this one: Does the hood, which clips around the outside of the front (I think), interfere with filter use? Is the hood a bit on the large side for what is a pleasantly small lens? Is it possible to buy it with the cap that covers the reversed hood? Is it possible to buy that cap anywhere? And that leads me to the alternative, the 12549/12550 Chrome/Black Elmar 50/2.8 39mm screw in hood. This one /looks/ better to me but: Is it effective enough as a hood for the Summicron Rigid? Does it cause vignetting with a 39mm filter also in place? What size is the front opening to allow a cap to also be used? Or better yet - does the A42 slip on cap I already have fit right over it? Thanks.
