  3. Hi everyone, I own a Summicron 50mm V2 DR and Type 1. I know the lens head should be detachable from the focusing mechanism in order to mount on bellows. This works correctly on the Type 1, but on the DR, when I turn the lens head, only the section housing the front elements rotates, thus revealing the aperture blades inside once removed, instead of detaching all elements in one block. I could try bypassing this section by rotating the aperture ring, but this feels unsafe as rotating the ring with force might damage the blades inside. I hope I've explained this clearly enough - not sure if anyone has a solution? I'm trying to remove the lens head on both lenses in order to swap them out, since the DR optics are cleaner but I prefer the size of the Type 1. (P.S. I'm not the type to attempt lens repair/cleaning myself, but this is a function built into the lens by Leica) Thanks in advance
  4. In a recent interview in Austrian Der Standard Peter Karbe was asked which camera and lens would be his preferred choice. The answer was "not an easy one", but it would be M11 and APO-Summicron 35. "STANDARD: One last question: If you had to choose a combo, what would be your camera and your lens of choice? Karbe: The M11 and APO-Summicron 35mm. But that's one of those questions... which of your children do you like best? If I had to choose, I would use this combination." Here is the link to the full (unlocked) Peter Karbe Der Standard interview (in German) by Mickey Manakas, where he speaks about the compromise in building the Noctilux f/0.95 and its evident flaws, the "Leica Look" myth, his views on smartphone photography, his pride in personally calculating the optical formula for Summilux 50 ASPH and many other cool topics: https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000144541043/leitender-optikexperte-bei-leica-wir-waren-vorreiter-bei-der-digitalisierung

  8. A small series I did on the Austrian tradition of "Almabtrieb". This is just a selection of pictures from the full series here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/derphilipppp/albums/72157659340180141 Leica M6 - 35mm Summicron IV - Kodak Portra 160 In case you don't know what an "Almabtrieb" is: The "Almabtrieb", which translates from German as: "drive from the mountain pasture", is an annual event in the alpine regions in Europe, referring to a cow train in autumn. During summer, all over the alpine regions cow herds feed on alpine pastures ("Almen" or "Alpen") high up in the mountains (a practice known as transhumance). In numbers, these amount to about 500,000 cows in Austria, 380,000 in Switzerland and 50,000 in Germany. While there is often some movement of cattle between the Almen during the summer, there is usually one concerted cow train in autumn to bring the cows to their stables down in the valley. This typically takes place in late September or early October. If there were no accidents on the Alm during the summer, in many areas the cows are decorated elaborately, and the cow train is celebrated with music and dance events in the towns and villages. Upon arrival in the valley, joint herds from multiple farmers are sorted in the Viehscheid, and each cow is returned to its owner. 9. Hey guys, together with Sailronin (Dave) here from the forum, we manage the 70mm Summarit-S lens group, this gave me the idea to start one for every lens: Super-Elmar-S 24mm Elmarit-S 30mm Summarit-S 35mm Elmarit-S 45mm Summarit-S 70mm Summicron-S 100mm Apo-Macro-Summarit-S 120mm Ts-Apo-Elmar-S 120mm Apo-Elmar-S 180mm Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm Become a member of the groups you have lenses for, or just browse the groups of lenses you are interested in or maybe want to get to see some samples. Please since the groups are new, add photos to the once you've taken photos with so the groups will soon turn alive! Not that the 70mm lens group is 'owned' by Sailronin, and moderated by me as well hence me sharing it here.
  10. Stayed there for a couple of days as part of a roadtrip. Went surfing, ate fish... great place! More photos of the southwest:
  11. Hi Guys, I am a restaurant operator and I love shooting food when I visit nice restaurants, and I would like to seek your advice regarding taking food shots with a Leica M. I currently use my Nikon D800 + a 50mm F2 Zeiss Makro-Planar to shoot when I go to a restaurant (please note I visit them as a diner, not a paid photographer). However, I would like to explore the capability of taking food photos with my Leica M. I currently own an M240 along with a 50mm APO Summicron lens, a 35mm 8-element Summicron lens, and a 60mm F1.2 Konica Hexanon lens (however I would like to use my 50APO in this scenario due to its sharpness. The 50APO has a 0.7m minimal focusing distance, which is not close enough if I wish to shoot say a piece of sushi. My current setup with the 50mm Zeiss macro lens enables me to get as close as 0.3m to the subject. Furthermore, in a nice restaurant, even with a longer lens, it is rude to move all the way backwards (say a 100mm macro lens) to shoot my food, also a reason I went with a 50mm macro. So I am just wondering whether a macro adapter would help solve my problem. I heard from a friend that with an adaptor, I can only shoot within a particular range from the subject (say for example only from 0.3 to 0.4m from the subject), but this really limits what kind of food I shoot (say a small piece like a sushi, or a large plate of pasta). So I would really appreciate if someone who has experience in this area can help me out. Since I would wish to continue using my 50APO, would a macro adaptor help? And in what range (distance wise) would I be able to shoot if I added an adaptor? Also someone suggested I could also consider using my Zeiss (Nikon mount) on my Leica M with an adaptor, would that work? Would it impact the quality of the photo? Ideally I would wish to use my 50APO on my M to shoot food as I spent quite a lot on this lens and body. Appreciate if someone can help me out. Thanks and regards, J

  15. Hi, I'm currently in the market for a 35mm lens. I own a 50mm Summicron and a voigtlander 21mm. is the 35mm Summicron ASPH worth it? Does it flare a lot? is there a big difference between the 50mm and 35mm?
  16. So I just purchased a really nice copy of a V5 Summicron-M 50mm and I noticed the lens mounting dot is orange, not red. A friend of mine had a spare lens dot from Leica sitting around and I checked it out and the spare dot is red, not orange. This lens is the black version so do the black lenses have orange dots? See the picture for the comparison, the orange dot is fixed to the lens the red dot is a spare. https://flic.kr/p/qq3GsH Any insight into this would be great. Thanks!
  17. I recently got my Leica M6 serviced by Youxin Ye, and after receiving i decided to take it out for a test run with my Summicron 50mm F2 Dual Range. I was all set to go until i noticed a problem...the lens does not focus all the way to infinity. It stops a lil bit after 10 meters.. I took a pic of it so everyone can see Anyone know what the issue may be? I use this lens on my M3 alot and have no issues focusing to infinity at all
  18. I have a 35mm summicron v4 and a 12504 clip-on round lens hood, they work pretty well together, but the hood cannot be fixed in a position, it sometimes rotates, it's not a big deal but this will potentially scratch the barrel which will affect the resale value a lot. The original square doesn't have this problem it can be fixed tightly, but I really like the look of 12504. Is there any way to stop it from rotating? Thanks!!!
  19. Hi everyone, I am proud to announce that I officially joined your family! Yesterday I finally got my Leica M240 and Summicron 35, waiting on my Lux 50!! I shot today few frames in the Universal city and I can't describe how impressed I am, the difference between my canon 5D2 and Leica is unbelievable! I planned to keep my 5D2 and lenses, but after compensation today "SORRY" Cannon you where a great friend, but it's time for a change! Super camera, Super community, Super quality! Also I would like to thank everyone who helped and advised on choosing my first Leica!
  20. Greetings Folks, Just wanted to share a favourite picture from today: Street-20110401-042 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Cheers, Edmond
  21. Hi guys, I own an M9 and a 28 cron and I absolutely love the images I am getting from this combo. However lately, I came across a 50 Pre-ASPH Lux on one of the websites for £1300 so I am very tempted to swap my Cron for the pre-asph lux to have a try particularly the focal length. (50 lux asph would be ideal but thats out of budget!) So, I have been searching around the forums and obviously cant find any direct comparison since they are not the same focal length to start with anyway. So I was wondering, how much sharper the Cron will be compared to the 50mm Pre-ASPH.( I am assuming it is sharper) Is it noticeable in daily photography?? If all I shoot is street and portraits normally viewed on iPad, MacbookPro and the max size I develop is around 5R. When I look back at photos that I deemed as 'keepers' when I was using Cron, most of them were taken at f2 or max f2.8. I feel as if that aperture gives me that magical image with perfect seperation but due to 28mm, Im always forced to take a more environmental approach. I am here to look for some advice and opinions and thank you all for your precious time. p.s. the online dealer is willing to make a direct swap for a 28Cron (very good cond) to a 50pre-asph lux (near mint). Is that an okay deal? how would you view the deal? Many thanks
  22. I currently have an M9-P on order as well as a Summilux 35mm f1.4 asph. I am fairly sure that the camera will arrive long before the lens will and, being a newcomer to rangefinders and Leica, I do not have any other lenses (yet!). One option is to buy a used lens which will see me through until the 35 Lux arrives and then, hopefully, sell it and not lose too much. My dealer has a Leitz Summicron 5cm f/2.0 for sale. My question is (an here is the newbie part): Does the '5cm' bit equate to a 50mm prime. Logic says it must. Also the details for the lens does not state whether or not this lens is 6 bit coded. My guess is that it is not a coded lens. If I am right in the above, the last question is, is this lens worth considering as a 'cheap' interim solution? Thanks for any advice.
  23. l'instant décisif ... ou indécis?
  24. Finally got my new black Leica M9-P and a second hand Summicron 50mm. Been missing my Leica since I sold my M8 and 35mm Summilux last. I deeply regret selling the 35. But till I get a new 35 my 50 Summicron will have to do. So far loving the camera. Battery life sucks, but I got 2 spare batteries. Some pics with my new gem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellingsen/6113188112 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellingsen/6136708978 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellingsen/6182084034 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellingsen/6113017968/
  25. Dear all, I've been using a 2nd-hand M9 for about 3 months now with Summicron 35mm, also brand new when purchased. I didn't find much problem in focusing with my Cron-35mm wide-open, regardless of the focusing distance. (Though I have to say focusing at far objects generally gives soft results even when stopped down. Is this the nature of the lens?) I recently got a brand new Summicron 75mm from BHPhoto (with some luck) and have been playing with it for 2 days. Before I started decribing my issue with it, let me say I'm not the kind of focus-freak, i.e. people who wants the focus to be extremely accurate. I understand the nature of rangefinder and for street shooting I mostly use zone focus or pre-focus. I could live with inaccurate focusing as long as the composition is good for me. But with 75mm wide-open (and its shallow DoF), I'm really noticing the error. In mid-range focusing distance (1.2m~3m) the focusing seems to be pretty accurate. But at very short distances (0.7m~1m) and anything beyond 5m, it seems to be off most of the time. I didn't do rigorous test using proper objects (like rulers or something). I just took a lot of shots with real-life subjects. Roughly speaking, when focusing close, say 0.7m, the error seems to be about 1~2cm. When focusing long, say 10m, it's much worse. I could really tell that the focus is not right. Given that rangefinder depends on users' bare eyes, I guess my eyesight has to be factored in. I wear glasses to correct my eyesights (about 600 degrees left and 450 right). I'm intersted in the experience of the other owners of Cron-75mm. Is this generally the case with this lens, that focusing at short distances and long distances tends to be off? Or is it neccessary that I send the camera and the lens to Leica for calibration? Again, I'm not after ultra-accurate focusing here. Just trying to understand as a newbie what really happens. If this is the way it is, I'll simply accept the fact and adjust my shooting style accordingly. Thank you for reading this. Jerry knopfler dans la rue 諾弗勒在街頭
