  1. Hey guys, together with Sailronin (Dave) here from the forum, we manage the 70mm Summarit-S lens group, this gave me the idea to start one for every lens: Super-Elmar-S 24mm Elmarit-S 30mm Summarit-S 35mm Elmarit-S 45mm Summarit-S 70mm Summicron-S 100mm Apo-Macro-Summarit-S 120mm Ts-Apo-Elmar-S 120mm Apo-Elmar-S 180mm Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm Become a member of the groups you have lenses for, or just browse the groups of lenses you are interested in or maybe want to get to see some samples. Please since the groups are new, add photos to the once you've taken photos with so the groups will soon turn alive! Not that the 70mm lens group is 'owned' by Sailronin, and moderated by me as well hence me sharing it here.
  2. I spotted this lady in a small village in Kephalonia, Greece. Wearing a face mask is common in Japan to stop the spread of germs but I've never seen this in Greece. Mask by Robert Michael Poole, on Flickr M9 50mm Summarit.
  3. Dear All, I just bought a Leica M9 and have been testing it out only to find a thing red line appearing on the right hand side of all my photographs. Sample attached. Does anyone know why this is happening? Also, my viewfinder is a bit strange. When I am using it I am able to align the ghost square over the square, but other times I have nothing to align meaning when I am looking through the viewfinder i see what is in front of me only. I have to take a couple of unfocused pics to get the focus point to appear again or switch off/on the camera. Has this happened to anyone before?
  4. I own both the Summarit and the Summitar. I like the swirl bokeh of Summitar better. What do you think?
  5. The photo was taken by Summarit 50mm f1.5 on Sony A7 at Fa Yuen Street, Hong Kong. "Fa Yuen" means garden in local language. It is a street-side market with stalls selling fresh fruit and low cost clothing and apparels. It attracts tourists. The photo was taken by in an early morning when most stalls were still closed. You may check out my other photos at BigBigLens.com - Leica.
  6. Hi, I am in the market for a used 90mm M. What are your experiences with those two lenses - which one would you recommend and why? Used price are somewhat similar... And what about 75mm 2.5 Summarit. I read about some people saying 75 Summarit is brilliant, but at the same time they didn't like 90mm 2.5 Summarit that much. Any help is welcome. Thanks / Alex
  8. Hi All, Whitch one to buy? I can get them both for the same price. I intend to use only one lens for my M9, so who will give best overall performance? Rgds
  9. Hello guys, I've got this question, when you buy a summarit or R lens new the rubber on the focussing ring is usually black-black... but after a while it usually turns greyish at some parts... Now my question is is there some 'product' that can give the rubber back its blackness. My idea is that it turns 'white/greyish' when it 'dries' out... or something... Now I really don't know nothing about rubber, or plastic rubbers. So please enlighten me! Thanks!

  12. I bought a "like new" M6 TTL last week (serial number denotes a 1999 model) with only three rolls run through it and have fallen head over heels in love with it. Problem is, the 50mm Summarit that I've been using on my M8 will not mount correctly to it. The lens will fit into the mount but will not twist and lock. The issue is particularly strange in that the lens mounts and focuses perfectly on my M8 and Voigtlander R4a as well as my friends' M3's, M2's, and M4's. Furthermore, all lenses that I've used on my M6; 50mm Summilux, 50mm Summicron, 35mm Summicron, 75mm Summilux, an older collapsible 50mm and even my voigtlander, zeiss and konica lenses mount and focus perfectly. I suppose I should mention that the Leica hood that I bought for the Summarit fit's a tad crooked (very slightly diagonal to the horizontal body lines on whatever camera I've mounted it to) but I can't imagine this having anything to do with the issue I'm having with the M6 as it has mounted just fine to other cameras, crooked hood or not. I know every company makes mistakes some times but this is really bugging me.
  13. I've compared a few classical Leitz/Zeiss lenses at the NEX-5N - maybe someone ist interested: NEX-5N and classical 50mm Zeiss / Leitz lenses 1) Leitz Elmar 5cm 1:3.5, uncoated (1936) 2) Zeiss Jena Sonnar LTM 5 cm 1:1.5, coated (1941) 3) Leitz Summarit 5cm 1:2, coated (1952) 4) Zeiss Jena Biotar 5.8cm 1:2, cooated (1953) 5) Zeiss Jena Tessar 5cm 1:2.8, coated (1956) 6) Zeiss Planar ZM 2/50mm (2005) 7) Zeiss C-Sonnar ZM 1.5/50mm (2005) I'ts just a small comparison - but better than nothing. If someone of the native english speaking could correct my terrible English i would be more than glad - just send me a message via "contact" at artaphot.ch, including the corrected text. I will insert it as soon as possible. Stephan
  14. The Summarit 5cm f/1.5 is one of those "You never know what will happen" lenses at night with any light source near the frame. This young lady from Boise, ID was kind enough to pose in the cold while I clumsily framed and focus this shot with the gorgeous little iiif. Portra 400. Leica iiif. 15. While on a walk about I came upon a tree in San Juan which had about 10 of these fellows on it. This caterpillar is the larval stage of a pretty large but undistinguished moth. The caterpillar however is amazing... this one was about 6 inches long... they look very fierce but apparently only filled with toxin to taste poorly to birds. They had stripped the tree bare. Thanks for looking.
  16. Hello everyone, recently I purchase a brand new 35mm summarit-m 2.5 online, and discover there are a ring of "gray metal dots" around the lens barrel. Have anyone of you notice this? I am also waiting for Leica to get back to me, but I like to know if this is part of the lens design or something, maybe glue the lenses together to the barrel? I put the lens under light and can see it really clearly all around the lens barrel. Thank you for your feedback. kenh
  17. Hey guys! I spent 6 weeks in NYC basically just taking pictures ... mostly street, but also Landscape and People ... I mostly used my M9 and 35mm Summilux ASPH (pre FLE) wide open and sometimes my S (006) and 70mm Summarit. If I don't comment which combo I used, it'll be the M9 35Lux combo... Feel free to comment and critique I'm not a pro and I just do stuff the way I like it .. so not everything is perfect... Here are a couple of shots from the End of July .. some of the best sunsets I have ever seen.
  18. Hi all, How good is Biogon-C 35 2.8 on M240? Being conceived for film / crop sensors, is there any color cast and/or corner smearing used on full frame digital? And how is compared to Summarit 2.4/35 and 2.5/35? By the way, I've seen MTF figures between 2.4 and 2.5 and they seem slight different, 2.4 seems to be less sharp in center but sharper in the corners than its 2.5 predecessor. Anyone who tried both? How they compares to last (v5/v6) Summicron, that I know quite well? Thanks in advance S.
  19. Good morning, From time to time I like to give myself a project to try and enhance my craft and keep me interested. This year my project is street portraits. It definitely puts one outside of one's comfort zone. My approach is simple, I look around for interesting characters, approach them and ask can I take their portrait. I have only been declined once (a nun who was praying) it is disappointing but important to respect this even when it means missing a fantastic shot! Most people are actually really happy to be asked, I like to chat a little whilst I am shooting to set people at ease and get more relaxed photos. People have even thanked me for taking time to talk to them which is really nice. I always show them the shot after on the LCD and tell them my website address to see the image later. I'm thinking of having some business cards printed to make this easier. I like to shoot wide open to get separation. One of the staff at Leica Store Manchester gave me the tip of focusing on the eye then moving your head slightly back and forward to find focus rather than use the ring (I'm sure people already know this but i thought it was a good tip). I like to shoot half a dozen frames whilst doing this to ensure focus is on the eye not slightly out. Though I do sometimes miss shots still and kick myself afterwards Anyway, here is one from a rather wet day in Kendal in the Lake District UK Street Portrait Kendal by Robert Michael Poole, on Flickr C/C always welcome. Thanks for looking Rob More street portraits can be seen on my website here: https://robertpoolephotography.com/portfolio/street-portraits/
  20. Whilst walking through Lido Di Jesolo after a day out over summer I just so happened to be in the right place at the right time. The light streamed through a gap in the buildings diffusing the fountains with a beautiful golden light. Just at the moment a young girl decided to cool off. Thanks for looking Fountain-2 by Robert Michael Poole, on Flickr www.robertpoolephotography.com
  21. I wasn't sure if this classed as street or just people so I put it here to be safe. Another shot from my trip to the Christmas markets in Manchester last weekend. We bought a lovely set of nutcracker Christmas tree decorations from this market stall and I managed to snap this quick photo whilst my wife was queuing to pay. C/C always welcome. 22. Just a question about my M6 and Summarit. I either never noticed or I never had a lens/camera combination do this so I thought I'd ask the pros. When I focus on something very very far away (Like an airliner at 30,000 feet for example) the viewfinder says it's not in focus when the lens is slammed all the way to infinity, but just a degree or two right before infinity. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, I can't remember any lens or camera ever doing this, but then this is the first 35mm summarit I've had and the first time I've used a fully CLA'd Leica camera also.

  24. All; I currently own a Leica M8, and have a 28mm and 50mm lens. On the M8, the 28mm is a (37mm equivalent, and the 50 is approx. a 66mm) Blah-Blah-Blah Anyway, I was thinking about a 35mm, (which would give me approx. a 46mm on the M8). I'm not looking to spend $3k on a 35mm Summicron. I've heard some good things about the Summarit and the Zeiss Biogons. The only thing about the Summarit is that the optional shade ($135.00) only screws in part of the way, as there is some sort of stop, which keeps it oriented properly since it is a rectangular shade. Now, what if I use a Cut IR on the Summarit, (which is pretty much mandatory for the M8)? Can the Optional Summarit lens shade screw into that properly, or should I just opt for a 'generic' B+W screw-in round metal shade for $25.00? You would really have to own a Summarit to know what I'm talking about. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Brad
  25. Hi, i love my 35mm Summicron v2 (1970) but since i had to take pictures at my brothers wedding i bought the 35mm Summarit 2.5 second hand to have a lens that is more predictable than the Summicron. You can't beat the Summicrons handling and built quality in my opinion. I really love the Summicron on my M6, but on my M240 it is pretty unpredictable. Sometimes you get glowy edges / highlights, sometimes not. I didn't want to risk anything especially with the brides white wedding dress. The center is sharp on the Summicron, the corners and even the area around the center are / is pretty soft even at F8. Vignetting is kinda strong but this doesn't bother me. Backlight is it's biggest enemy - you can’t take pictures facing the sun because the whole image is gonna get completely white. The Summarit is an aspherical lens even if it wasn't marketed this way by Leica. Corners are sharp, not much vignetting and the focus throw is the shortest i've ever seen. It is only a 2.5 lens versus the Summicrons 2.0 (a half stop) but the subject isolation seems to be quite the same between the two lenses. I did a little comparison because maybe somebody is interested in buying a Leica lens in this price range. The Summarit costs about 1200€-1300€, just like the Summicron v2. The size and speed is almost the same, so in my eyes these two are pretty comparable in some aspects - even if they are almost 40 years apart. If you compare the images the Summicron looks pretty bad like it had some kind of cheap plastic lenses. The rendering is way different (Summarit warm, Summicron pretty cool). I’m using Mastin Labs presets in capture one and i really do like the Summicron images because the look some kind of analog. I can’t keep both lenses so i have to decide which one has to go. Summicron pro: - small - f2 - sharp in the center - a lot of character - 52 years old - it’s a Summicron, a piece of history and i own it now for almost 10 years Summicron con: - sometimes glowy - pretty bad with backlight / flares - sometimes „dull“ images Summarit pro: - sharp in the center and the corners - super fast focus throw - very nice flaring while shooting backlight scenes, you can shoot straight into the sun Summarit con: - f2.4 - images look really clean, maybe too clean - way less charakter I’ve considered selling them both including my 50mm Summicron v4 and getting a 35mm Summicron v4 to get the best compromise. Small, fast, maybe sharp corners, classic look - i don’t know about flaring and leica glow. The version 2 glow is the biggest issue in my eyes - what do you think?
