  1. In a recent interview in Austrian Der Standard Peter Karbe was asked which camera and lens would be his preferred choice. The answer was "not an easy one", but it would be M11 and APO-Summicron 35. "STANDARD: One last question: If you had to choose a combo, what would be your camera and your lens of choice? Karbe: The M11 and APO-Summicron 35mm. But that's one of those questions... which of your children do you like best? If I had to choose, I would use this combination." Here is the link to the full (unlocked) Peter Karbe Der Standard interview (in German) by Mickey Manakas, where he speaks about the compromise in building the Noctilux f/0.95 and its evident flaws, the "Leica Look" myth, his views on smartphone photography, his pride in personally calculating the optical formula for Summilux 50 ASPH and many other cool topics: https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000144541043/leitender-optikexperte-bei-leica-wir-waren-vorreiter-bei-der-digitalisierung
  2. Here's a marginally interesting read about the Noctilux. I can't agree with much of what he has to say about the Noctilux being hard to work with, but he did hit one nail on the head when he observes that "...the best things in life are rarely rational." Noctilux lenses are maligned by some, as is the bokeh they produce. I suspect it is not out of a distaste for bokeh or a misunderstanding of how to effectively use it as a composition tool. I suspect that it is based on a hatred of the Noctilux lenses based on the price, as is the case for some who hate all M cameras and lenses because of their price tags, which is an utterly childish and self-centered outlook IMHO. The author is using the 0.95 Noctilux, which may be harder to work ith than the older f/1.0 Noctilux, which I have. I'm wondering if those who have used both the 0.95 and the 1.0 if the newer f/0.95 version is harder to work with than its older sibling? A link to the article: https://www.35mmc.com/18/08/2019/bokeh-worship-the-leica-noctilux-m-50mm-f-0-95-asph-by-steven-bleistein/ Thoughts?
  3. My Noctilux F/.95 will not set to automatic detection on my new M10, received yesterday. That lens does set to automatic detection on my M240, and my WATE lens sets to automatic detection on both cameras. What is the problem with my Noctilux F/.95 on my new M10? What to do? As a temporary solution, I have manually set my new M10 for the Noctilux F/1. Is that recommendable for fine performance? I thankfully welcome all advice on this matter.
  4. I had my heart set on getting a used Noctilux 50MM f/0.95, but I also found a used Noctilux 75MM f1.25. I wanted the 50 because I regret selling my Summilux ASPH 50MM - I really miss that dreamy/creamy look! The 50 Noctilux could be a suitable replacement, with an extra stop to boot! The "more usable" focal length is another plus. On the other hand, the 75 is appealing to me because it is a more modern lens with less CA/purple fringing, less vignetting, and a sharper look. I also don't have any 75MM yet. I shoot a lot of portraiture, but admittedly it's more environmental, so not totally sure if 75MM would be the right FL anyway. Still, I think I could make use of the 75. Any thoughts on which one would be "better," all things considered? Do I get both?! FYI - I am shooting on an M10 and also have a 50 APO and a 35 Lux FLE. Thanks all!
  5. I must admit that since acquiring it several years ago, I do not much go to my Noctilux 50mm f/.95. My biggest disappointment is that while I really want to use it for portraiture, the minimum focusing distance is so far that I am unable to fill the screen with my subject. Instead, I must back away significantly and then crop. So, before I consider selling the beast, I thought that maybe forum members could post their favorite .95 images to persuade me otherwise. I'll start with a photo from the .95 that I am happy with. Happy New Year! Image: Copyright 2020 Gordon Ownby
