  1. Hello everybody, I just came across the website of ARRI (for those of you who don't know: it's a big cinema camera, lens and light manufacturer from Germany). They build the Arri Alexa camera as a monochrom version, which I guess is similar in sensor design as Leica does for photography (increased resolution, higher dynamic range, more light sensitive...). One thing I can't find anywhere is: do the Leica monochrom cameras also have no IR filter and that's the reason why they render highlights and shadows in a different way? In all the reviews out there, no one is talking about that point specifically. Here's the link to the ARRI website: https://www.arrirental.com/en/cameras/exclusive-cameras/alexa-monochrome-cameras
  2. I’ve been playing with the Leica M 11 Monochrom for about a week now. At higher ISOs, I have noticed the presence and some images of a tartan-like grid pattern. At first I thought it was lights that was causing this pattern. Then I started to wonder if my sensor was defective. After reading a review, I noticed that the reviewer also mentioned that at ISO’s as low as 6400 a tartan-like grid pattern could appear in the shadow areas of the image. So my question are as follows: • Is this a defective sensor? • Is it something that can be fixed with firmware? • Are Leica aware of this issue. • Are there plans to address it this matter? High ISO performance is all well and good, but if the image is ruined by pattern noise, then it no longer becomes usable at those ISO’s. More concerning is the revelation that this pattern noise may be present as early as 6400 ISO. This discovery has taken the shine of this camera for me. I do hope for some good news from Leica soon.
  3. I happened to discover this online essay today - the author offers some interesting insights into the M246 Monochrom and why it is still a viable choice: Why I bought a Leica M246 Monochrom https://mwwphotography.co.uk/blog/leicam246monochrom
  4. A drizzly, cold, damp afternoon on New York City's famed High Line gave a moody, monochrome atmosphere which called for this shot to be captured in B&W. This M240 is my first Leica since my M2. This camera made me fall in love with B&W all over again. I could so trade this in for the M262 Monochrom.
  5. I just now happened to stumble upon this essay on the M10 Monochrom which is accompanied by a nice set of sample images. In thinking about the concept of a black and white only digital camera in general and about the M10 Monochrom in particular, I was smitten with a thought that I cannot shake free of: The M 10 Monochrom may well be the pinnacle of the digital M camera. It is going to be an awfully hard act to follow. If anyone can best the M10 Monochrom, it would have to be the gents and ladies of Werzlar. https://www.popphoto.com/story/gear/hands-on-leica-m10-monochrome/
  6. Hey guys. Actually I still don't know which is better. Mono246 or m10m. I know 40mp is better, more detail, smaller, but i have mono246 + sl2. I have more details with SL2, and i can shoot with mono246. Actually i have both, details and really b&w. Do you consider having a m10m a necessity? If money doesn't matter what choice you make! Why? Thanks 🙏
  7. Dear all, I am wondering how to optimize my workflow since I got the M10M. Right now, I have a - not so satisfactory - workflow with my SL / CL : I download some pictures (JPG) via Leica Fotos to my iPad Pro to share the best shots quickly after quick tweaking, and then (sometimes a very looong time later) download the whole SD card content (DNG) to my iMac and process them through LR 6 (and Tonality CK for B&W). I like the results, but it is long and somewhat tiresome, all the more so LR is a bit slow on my Mac. And work is done almost twice for the best pictures. I find my processing is easier with the M10M, than my former M(240), as (my opinion after a short time using it) I get BW results I like quite quickly on LR, and even with Photos on the iPad. So I am thinking about rationalising and getting complementary workflows with my Mac and my iPad, ie not doing things twice : downloading DNG pictures on the iPad and downloading the rest later through the computer, and join everything in the same catalogue. I could use a HDD/SSD with the iPad to copy the pictures : I don't really need/want to stock pictures on the cloud. It seems the paying iPad Fotos app is designed for such things, and I am thinking about it as results with the M10M seem to be easier to get (though I find abnormal Leica dare to ask for a paying app...) Has anybody tried the solution, and tell if he is satisfied with the results ? Or do you have another / better workflow ? thanks for your inputs on your optimal workflow on your M10M ! Didier
  8. What's up with these limited to "50 pieces" kits? Is Leica trying to shoo the last few Monochrom 246 cameras out of dealer's display cases before the arrival of the Monochrom M10? Or is this just an exercise in staving off boredom until the M-M10 arrives?
  9. While we suffer an interminable wait for the (alleged soon to be) M10 Monochrom, I have to ask: Why not a Q2 Monochrom?? Think of the possibilities that a full frame, 47 MP, ISO 50,000 Monochrom with a 28mm f/1.7 lens and a silent leaf shutter would have to offer! To the gents in Wetzlar, I have to ask: Are you listening? To everyone else, I ask: What are your thoughts on a Q2 Monochrom?

  11. Hello. My name is Rocky and have been reading this forum on and off for quite a while. My photography journey started when I was a teenager living in Tokyo in the mid-60's shooting, developing, and printing black and white. I wish I had bought a Canon f/0.95 lens then selling new for about $140. Fast forward to the early 2000's when I overcame the idea that this hobby was too expensive. Not exactly true, so I compared Nikon and Canon, and really liked the image quality of Nikon, but chose Canon for its inventory of "L" glass -- especially fast lenses. I'm fortunate to have a good copy of the 50mm f/1.0L -- not in the same league as a Noctilux, but for about 1/3 the cost. I had never even touched a Leica camera till last week-end when I spent about 45 minutes with a Leica M10 and W-O-W! To borrow a line from the film "Field of Dreams", "Is this heaven?" Yesterday I looked at an M6 and the body seemed to melt into my hands. In the Canon world the 300mm f/2.8L IS is considered by many to be the holy grail for its sharpness, bokeh and rendering of colors. It's also a beast of a lens to handhold which is often how I prefer to shoot it order to be more versatile and nimble. In the next week or so I expect to have a Monochrom M 1st generation which I'm getting from a guy off of Fred Miranda, and the shutter has less than 2000 actuations. I was going to wait for the M10 Monochrom, but can't pass up such an opportunity. There will be an M10-P coming in soon and several lenses including a Nocti --- but there are limits to what I can buy. A local photo shop does rent a Zeiss 20mm Canon mount, so I'm wondering if anyone here has used an adaptor as the one made by Fotodiox with good results on a Leica M body, and if so, did you use live view to focus and please share your experience. A British chap who used to work at the Photo Shop I mentioned was the local Leica guy, and he once told me of how he used a Nikon D800 equipped with a macro lens to "scan" 35 mm negatives that he would then convert to digital form with a scanner and then process in Photoshop, so question #2 is has anyone done something similar here, did you use a flatbed or barrel scanner and how do you think the results compared to doing that work by conventional means.

  13. Hallo, ich habe heute einen SF20 an die CCD Monochrom gesetzt. Nur auslösen will der nicht. Hat jemand eine Erklärung für mich?
  14. Following a week in Glasgow where I had to go for a business trip I did spend a weekend on the Isle of Skye. Having seen many excellent photos from there the Isle of Skye is one of my "100 places to go and shoot" list. No luck with light and weather, however, Skye turned out to be on that weekend a real photographer's "wet dream". Making the best out of it, I decided to post process the photos in B&W (using Silver Efex Pro 2). Going to show some of the photos here, hope you like them and looking forward to your "likes" and comments;). SL with VE2,8-4/24-90mm

  19. Hello, We are running another Leica adademie based photowalk on the 30th of January 2016 in the centre of Bristol. Robin Sinha, from the Leica Academie Mayfair will join us and provide a valuable insight into the Leica M system. This practical day will teach you how to get the best from a rangefinder camera and take classic "decisive moment" photography that Leica is renowned for. the day will start at 10.30am, there will be a Leica M body and lens for each attendee to try (as well as X and T system) and will consist of the following: 10.30am – 11.00am – Robin Sinha will introduce you to his work with a short talk using his own images to demonstrate Leica Photography. 11.00am - 11.30am - Review and mini-critique of attendees images (attendees are asked to bring 4 images on a USB stick that represent their photography) 11.30am - 12.30pm Familiarisation with the Leica camera range prior to photowalk. 12.30pm – 1.00pm – Lunch break 1.00pm – 2.30pm – Photowalk around Bristol using the Leica cameras provided 2.30pm onwards – Back to the studio for image review and critique. 4pm approx - finish The location will be a bit different to the last one, probably based around the temple meads/temple quay area so right next to the main train station. If you wish to book a place on the course, please email bristol@lcegroup.co.uk or call 0117 9291935. Please let me know if you have any queries and look forward to seeing you there. Tom
  20. Hello! We are offering a free 1 hour tutorial session on the Leica M-Monochrom (typ 246), here at our store in Bristol, on Baldwin Street. The session will be a great opportunity to get to know the Monochrom if you haven't had a chance to use it yet, and as long as the weather permits us, give you some time to use it around the harbour side with our resident Leica expert Tom Greetham. Those who attend our free tutorial session will get the chance to partake in some exclusive Leica offers as well! We are pretty flexible regarding dates and times for this session, so please let us know if you're interested and we can try to find a time that suits you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! If you wish to book a place on the course, please email bristol@lcegroup.co.uk or call 0117 9291935. We look forward to seeing you there. 21. Here's an interesting photographer. Appearently she only used MM for this project. Half greek like myself. http://theempireproject.com/lang-EN/exhibitions-45/works-1434/
  22. This is regarding theoretical resolution only. Nothing else. Written by someone with no electrical engineering knowledge or background. Just a physics question, if you will. The 246 part is easy. I get it. Each pixel on the sensor reads a different density of light, all the data are collected, and a monochrome file is generated. Sounds simple although I am sure it's not. On the 240, the sensor is covered by a Bayer filter, which is a series of quadrangles of RGB micro prisms. Each prism has a "filter factor" The camera's software must consider this filter factor to come up with a true density of each pixel, and then must extrapolate from the four pixels what the color of that quadrangle of filters must be. Hence, the resolution would be less than a file generated by a monochrom camera because four pixels are involved in calculation of a color point vs. one pixel per light density point. But regarding conversion of files to monochrome in a 240, why can't the software correct for the color filter factors to assign a density of gray to each pixel while ignoring the color extrapolation? Wouldn't this theoretically keep the resolution of a monochrome file from a 240 the same as from a 246? The micro filter should not affect resolution, which is determined by what comes out of the back of the lens and the individual pixels. It's not as if the poor optical quality of each micro lens would affect image quality. When I enlarge Thighslapper's DNG files from the two cameras up to 1200% and convert the 240 to gray scale, I see absolutely no difference in the gray shading of the individual pixels. (No, this isn't extreme pixel peeping, it's trying to understand how the sensor and software work). So, I'm wondering, at low ISO's, shouldn't the resolution theoretically and practically be identical? And isn't it the lack of "filter factors" which largely accounts for the increased ISO performance in the 246? More photon can strike the individual pixels so the noise is less?
  23. Just curious if anyone is pondering buying a new MM in 2015, rather than the new M246? If so, I am interested to know why. I just got back some 20x30" prints I took last year on my MM. I love the look of them, and wonder if I might in fact like the look of the M246 files less. Almost every other consideration points to getting the M246 instead of the MM - better body, buffer, live view and better screen for certain lenses / edges critical work, and no sleepless nights worrying about CCD corrosion. The current price differential might be one consideration. The MM is currently being offered 'street' price' 29% less than the M246. But if I opt for the M246, I will wait for its street price to drop a bit. Meantime, this is the last chance to get a brand new Monochrom... So the price difference is not part of my thinking. I've read what Erwin Puts has to say on this. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same current dilemma? Thanks.

  25. I got into Leica through the M9 and loved it for a while, but sold it last year as I was increasingly frustrated by the shutter noise and the primitive lcd screen. I kept my Leica lenses and now use them occasionally on my M2 and more often on a Sony A7. Whilst the A7 does a good job producing high quality images with 35mm and above lenses, I now miss the true digital rangefinder experience and have been thinking for some months now about getting the M240 or the MM. I convert 95% of my images to B&W and so the MM might make a lot of sense: users seem to have a religious zeal for it, and certainly the images are unique in terms of contrast, and grain. However, I remain concerned that as it is the same architecture as the M9, it will still feel clunky in operation and out of date. So, my questions are, in view of the huge financial outlay - should an owner of some beautiful Leica lenses without a Leica body buy: (a) the Leica M (still discounted new in the UK); or ( the current M Monochrom (second hand); or © hold out for a new M Monochrom built on an M240 platform? Also, any updates on when this might be released? And do you think the likely improvements (Live View, better screen, higher ISO) could be outweighed by drawbacks (e.g. heavier, less classic, more cluttered)?
