  1. Hello everybody, I just came across the website of ARRI (for those of you who don't know: it's a big cinema camera, lens and light manufacturer from Germany). They build the Arri Alexa camera as a monochrom version, which I guess is similar in sensor design as Leica does for photography (increased resolution, higher dynamic range, more light sensitive...). One thing I can't find anywhere is: do the Leica monochrom cameras also have no IR filter and that's the reason why they render highlights and shadows in a different way? In all the reviews out there, no one is talking about that point specifically. Here's the link to the ARRI website: https://www.arrirental.com/en/cameras/exclusive-cameras/alexa-monochrome-cameras
  2. I’ve been playing with the Leica M 11 Monochrom for about a week now. At higher ISOs, I have noticed the presence and some images of a tartan-like grid pattern. At first I thought it was lights that was causing this pattern. Then I started to wonder if my sensor was defective. After reading a review, I noticed that the reviewer also mentioned that at ISO’s as low as 6400 a tartan-like grid pattern could appear in the shadow areas of the image. So my question are as follows: • Is this a defective sensor? • Is it something that can be fixed with firmware? • Are Leica aware of this issue. • Are there plans to address it this matter? High ISO performance is all well and good, but if the image is ruined by pattern noise, then it no longer becomes usable at those ISO’s. More concerning is the revelation that this pattern noise may be present as early as 6400 ISO. This discovery has taken the shine of this camera for me. I do hope for some good news from Leica soon.
  3. I happened to discover this online essay today - the author offers some interesting insights into the M246 Monochrom and why it is still a viable choice: Why I bought a Leica M246 Monochrom https://mwwphotography.co.uk/blog/leicam246monochrom
  4. Hello, We are running another Leica adademie based photowalk on the 30th of January 2016 in the centre of Bristol. Robin Sinha, from the Leica Academie Mayfair will join us and provide a valuable insight into the Leica M system. This practical day will teach you how to get the best from a rangefinder camera and take classic "decisive moment" photography that Leica is renowned for. the day will start at 10.30am, there will be a Leica M body and lens for each attendee to try (as well as X and T system) and will consist of the following: 10.30am – 11.00am – Robin Sinha will introduce you to his work with a short talk using his own images to demonstrate Leica Photography. 11.00am - 11.30am - Review and mini-critique of attendees images (attendees are asked to bring 4 images on a USB stick that represent their photography) 11.30am - 12.30pm Familiarisation with the Leica camera range prior to photowalk. 12.30pm – 1.00pm – Lunch break 1.00pm – 2.30pm – Photowalk around Bristol using the Leica cameras provided 2.30pm onwards – Back to the studio for image review and critique. 4pm approx - finish The location will be a bit different to the last one, probably based around the temple meads/temple quay area so right next to the main train station. If you wish to book a place on the course, please email bristol@lcegroup.co.uk or call 0117 9291935. Please let me know if you have any queries and look forward to seeing you there. Tom
  5. Hello! We are offering a free 1 hour tutorial session on the Leica M-Monochrom (typ 246), here at our store in Bristol, on Baldwin Street. The session will be a great opportunity to get to know the Monochrom if you haven't had a chance to use it yet, and as long as the weather permits us, give you some time to use it around the harbour side with our resident Leica expert Tom Greetham. Those who attend our free tutorial session will get the chance to partake in some exclusive Leica offers as well! We are pretty flexible regarding dates and times for this session, so please let us know if you're interested and we can try to find a time that suits you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! If you wish to book a place on the course, please email bristol@lcegroup.co.uk or call 0117 9291935. We look forward to seeing you there. 6. I was shooting the MM in about 19 to 20 degree F weather. It kept showing a shutter failure sign. After 2 to 15 sec the shutter would reset and I could shoot again. Are cold temps a problem with the MM? It worked fine again when warmed back up. I didn't try MM #2, so can't say it happened to both of the cams.

Lg Micha
  10. Just curious if anyone is pondering buying a new MM in 2015, rather than the new M246? If so, I am interested to know why. I just got back some 20x30" prints I took last year on my MM. I love the look of them, and wonder if I might in fact like the look of the M246 files less. Almost every other consideration points to getting the M246 instead of the MM - better body, buffer, live view and better screen for certain lenses / edges critical work, and no sleepless nights worrying about CCD corrosion. The current price differential might be one consideration. The MM is currently being offered 'street' price' 29% less than the M246. But if I opt for the M246, I will wait for its street price to drop a bit. Meantime, this is the last chance to get a brand new Monochrom... So the price difference is not part of my thinking. I've read what Erwin Puts has to say on this. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same current dilemma? Thanks.
  11. This morning in the Plaza, Rincon Puerto Rico. With my newly received (used) MM. Summarit 75.
  12. I got into Leica through the M9 and loved it for a while, but sold it last year as I was increasingly frustrated by the shutter noise and the primitive lcd screen. I kept my Leica lenses and now use them occasionally on my M2 and more often on a Sony A7. Whilst the A7 does a good job producing high quality images with 35mm and above lenses, I now miss the true digital rangefinder experience and have been thinking for some months now about getting the M240 or the MM. I convert 95% of my images to B&W and so the MM might make a lot of sense: users seem to have a religious zeal for it, and certainly the images are unique in terms of contrast, and grain. However, I remain concerned that as it is the same architecture as the M9, it will still feel clunky in operation and out of date. So, my questions are, in view of the huge financial outlay - should an owner of some beautiful Leica lenses without a Leica body buy: (a) the Leica M (still discounted new in the UK); or ( the current M Monochrom (second hand); or © hold out for a new M Monochrom built on an M240 platform? Also, any updates on when this might be released? And do you think the likely improvements (Live View, better screen, higher ISO) could be outweighed by drawbacks (e.g. heavier, less classic, more cluttered)?

  17. This is regarding theoretical resolution only. Nothing else. Written by someone with no electrical engineering knowledge or background. Just a physics question, if you will. The 246 part is easy. I get it. Each pixel on the sensor reads a different density of light, all the data are collected, and a monochrome file is generated. Sounds simple although I am sure it's not. On the 240, the sensor is covered by a Bayer filter, which is a series of quadrangles of RGB micro prisms. Each prism has a "filter factor" The camera's software must consider this filter factor to come up with a true density of each pixel, and then must extrapolate from the four pixels what the color of that quadrangle of filters must be. Hence, the resolution would be less than a file generated by a monochrom camera because four pixels are involved in calculation of a color point vs. one pixel per light density point. But regarding conversion of files to monochrome in a 240, why can't the software correct for the color filter factors to assign a density of gray to each pixel while ignoring the color extrapolation? Wouldn't this theoretically keep the resolution of a monochrome file from a 240 the same as from a 246? The micro filter should not affect resolution, which is determined by what comes out of the back of the lens and the individual pixels. It's not as if the poor optical quality of each micro lens would affect image quality. When I enlarge Thighslapper's DNG files from the two cameras up to 1200% and convert the 240 to gray scale, I see absolutely no difference in the gray shading of the individual pixels. (No, this isn't extreme pixel peeping, it's trying to understand how the sensor and software work). So, I'm wondering, at low ISO's, shouldn't the resolution theoretically and practically be identical? And isn't it the lack of "filter factors" which largely accounts for the increased ISO performance in the 246? More photon can strike the individual pixels so the noise is less?
  18. Case in point. The first shot was my test shot to fix exposure and focus for the second shot of a pair of lovely twins enjoying Sushi in downtown Manhattan. Had no idea or care what I was doing in the first test shot. BUT I ACTUALLY LIKE IT BETTER. Nothing earth shattering, of course. But the layers of people remind me of a random stream of consciousness. The second shot is ok, but I ruin it. MM/50mm lux asph

  20. This is curious. I have two Monochrom bodies and today shot through an IR filter (93) using exactly the same settings, lens, etc etc, just changing bodies. Both were processed in Lightroom syncing the settings. The difference between the results was revealing. Although it is not apparent shooting normally, the IR filter shows what may well be a serious problem on one of the bodies. Yet I cannot see a difference when the filter is not used. I repeated the test several times in different scenes and got the same thing. I sent the two images to Leica to see if they can explain what is happening. Anyone seen this before?
  21. I needed to demonstrate the technical excellence of Apple's retina display on the new MacBook Pro for an article on my technology blog. So I turned to the Leica Monochrom and my trusty 35mm Summicron ASPH. 1/350s at f/3.4, handheld. You could argue that the retina screen is all about colour, so a colour shot could have been preferable. I decided to go with B&W for a different perspective.
