Hallo, heute ist es genau ein Jahr her, dass ich mir eine gebrauchte Leica M10 gekauft habe. Das nehme ich nun zum Anlass, ein paar Zeilen darüber zu schreiben, warum ich mir die Kamera gekauft habe und ich auch ein Jahr später noch glücklich damit bin. Mit Leica Messsucherkameras fotografiere ich schon seit Jahrzehnten und seit Anfang der Neunziger praktisch ausschließlich. Im November 2006 habe ich mir eine M8 gekauft und diese gut 16 Jahre als meine Hauptkamera genutzt. Für mich eine tolle Kamera, aber die Zeit geht gerade an digitalen Kameras nicht ganz spurlos vorbei. Und her spielte ich schon eine Weile mit dem Gedanken mir eine neue Kamera zu gönnen. Aber musste es wirklich wieder eine sündhaft teuere Leica werden? Was mache ich überhaupt mit meiner Kamera? Sie ist meine ständige Reisebegleiterin auf meinen zahlreichen Dienstreisen, meine „Gehhilfe“ für meist abendliche Fotospaziergänge in fremden Gegenden und die Kamera mit der ich private Erinnerungen festhalte (Reisebilder: https://www.instagram.com/tim_travels_light/ ). Und ich bin ein „Ein-Kamera-Mensch“. Ich will nur eine Kamera haben und die muss ich überall mit hin nehmen können. Sie kommt einfach in den Rucksack oder den Messenger Bag und los geht’s … eine Rolle, wie gemacht für eine M. Aber ich fotografiere häufig bei schlechtem, oder gar sehr schlechtem Licht … mit der M2/ M4-P und M6 fühlte ich mich mit Kodak T-Max 3200 und CN400 immer gut gerüstet… aber Korn ist eben doch etwas anderes als digitales Rauschen und mangelnder Dynamikunmang … Hin und wieder mache ich auch mal ein paar kleine Auftragsarbeiten für meine Frau. Das sind dann Fotos für Websites und Flyer. Meine Reise von der M8 zur M10: Zunächst habe ich mit einen Leica M Adapter für die Sony Alpha 7 unseres mittleren Sohnes besorgt und meine Leica M Optiken an der Kamera ausprobiert. Das funktioniert zwar, ist aber nicht das was ich wollte. Ich habe keine wesentlichen Unterschiede bei der Bildqualität zwischen der Sony-Linse und den Leica Optiken festgestellt, aber das Handling ist einfach grottig. Und auch der elektronische Sucher mit den vielen Zusatzinformationen ist einfach nichts für mich. Es passt einfach nicht zu meiner Art zu fotografieren, oder zu mir. Es macht mir einfach nicht so viel Spaß mit der Sony Alpha zu fotografieren. Aber die Bildergebnisse sind toll; von der technischen Bildqualität meines Erachtens nach locker auf dem Niveau der Leica M10. In der Tat hängt bei uns im Treppenhaus ein 80x120cm Print, der mit der Sony und dem billig anmutenden Zoomobjektiv aus dem Set aufgenommen wurde. Also nach ein, zwei Wochen „Sony-Begeisterung“ zurück zur M8. Der Spaß an der Fotografie war sofort wieder da, aber die Enttäuschung über die mangelnde Bildqualität war nun noch größer. Aber egal, einfach die Kamera die nun mal da ist einpacken und ab in die Alpen auf eine kleine Hütte im Montafon zum Skilaufen. Das war dann quasi das Todesurteil für die M8. Tagsüber bei gutem Licht toll, aber abends in der Hütte grauenhaft - verrauschte, verwackelte und flache Aufnahmen; kein Vergleich zu den iPhone Aufnahmen der Anderen. Ich habe ein paar schöne Landschaftsaufnahmen von meinen Skitouren mitgebracht u d die Erkenntnis, dass ich entweder in der Kombination M8 & Smartphone fotografieren muss, oder doch mal bei eBay nach einer neueren M schauen sollte. Also dann doch wieder die M6 und einer der Kodaks, die noch im Schrank lagern. Klasse, macht Spaß, aber der Filmscanner und der Vergrößerer sind schon lange eingemottet und zurück will ich im Moment nicht. Ja und dann stand sie da in der Vitrine eines Fotohändlers direkt gegenüber der Arztpraxis aus der ich gerade kam. Also schnell mal rein und kurz so eine moderne M in die Hand nehmen … da war dann sofort klar, die oder keine … aber nur, wenn ich dafür weniger bezahlen muss als damals für meine M10. Ok, das hat dann erst beim dritten Besuch des Fotoladens und mit dem Verhandlungsgeschick meiner Frau geklappt, aber seit einem Jahr habe ich eine nagelneu aussehende M10. Ich musste die 2017er Firmware erstmal updated, die Kamera bei Leica registrieren und auch die Ladekabel auspacken, die noch mit den kleinen Bindern eingerollt waren und dann ging’s los. Wobei mich schon interessieren würde welche Geschichte die Kamera eigentlich hat. Ich habe mir dann als Zubehör jochen einen COOPH Rope Camera Strap, eine Displayschutzfolie und den Okulargewindeadapter für die Korrekturlinse gegönnt, den Rest hatte ich ja schon. Zur Finanzierung der M10 habe ich die M8, die M4-P mit Moto und Leica Meter und ein altes Objektiv verkauft.

M8 35mm Summicron ASPH

I put my M8 aside for a few years as I was a little disappointed in it. Its ISO limits and poor dynamic range plus the limits of an optical finder with an old fashioned rangefinder were becoming increasingly apparent to me. But lately I have been giving it another go and have been using it, getting good results and enjoying it. Especially its color rendition. I always shoot in uncompressed RAW by the way. Looking back through my older images downloaded to my PC I noticed that many were not terribly sharp - despite the supposed benefits of having a sensor without an AA filter. I am not talking about the apparent sharpness when viewed on the camera's LCD which of course is terrible for this purpose, I am speaking about the images saved on my PC explicitly. I initially put this down to focus errors (mine) and its one reason I became discouraged from using the camera. But then recently I started seriously post processing many of these images with Adobe Lightroom rather than just leaving them on the PC. The thing I noticed is how well the M8 images which started out a tiny bit soft - or in some cases quite soft, sharpened up nicely without artifacts. In fact in my view they sharpen up much better than those of any other cameras and lenses I regularly use (and I use cameras by Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus). I should add that I am presently mainly using Lightroom for this and other processing. It set me thinking. Is this what they mean by the sharpness benefit of not having an AA filter over the sensor? I had expected that without an AA filter the images would be sharp right out of the camera even though the DNG images presumably get no in camera sharpening. But not so in my experience. Is this consistent with other people's experience of image sharpness from an M8. Do you find the M8 images respond to sensitive and well executed sharpening better than other cameras which presumably have an AA filter. BTW I used to use the Nik Sharpening Efex filter but now generally just use Lightroom's filter. Just bought a used M8 and it has Firmware 2.005 on it. I can see the latest is 2.024 but there have been minor problems with it. Is there a list of what features were added in each firmware? What version would everyone recommend I go to (if I need to change at all?) TIA

Leica M8, Canon 50/1.2

I am looking for a camera bag that should cost around $60-100 and it should fit a M8 with a 50mm Summicron. I want it to look like something normal and doesn't scream "I AM A CAMERA BAG! LOOK AT ME!" and should fit a M8 with a water bottle and some batteries. I originally wanted a billingham hadley digital but didn't think it was worth the price (and another kidney) so yeah, hope you guys can help!

Anlässlich des interessanten Vortrags von Peter Karbe "Fotografie - Technik im Wandel der Zeit" am 14. Oktober 2021, besuchte ich das Ernst Leitz Museum und hielt meine Eindrücke in ein paar Fotos fest:

Dear all, I am totall new to the leica digital world. I currently brought a M9 in a excellent condition. But one thing makes me a little bit wondering: sometimes the LCD display shows me pictures with strange rings. It happened very often when I shoot in-door under poor/artificial light source. the rings disappeared when I shoot under higher iso (1600 or higher). Leica Care told me it is normal. The camera have to compress the original photo extremely to be able to show it on this small LCD screen. Due to the bad resolution and colour depth of the compressed picture, these rings may appears. The explanation by Leica is quite OK. But yesterday I have the chance to try a Leica M8.2. It doesn’t show any rings when shooting under the same condition. Now I am really confused. Can anyone tell me if it is normal bei M9 or my LCD is somehow defect? Thanks s lot for your help! Best regards Frank

I tend to work with ISOs of around 10-15% of maximum on my digital Leicas (Q2 and M-P 240) in the interest of image quality. I/Q does not always seem to be a linear proposition, though. With my M-P 240, I have made images at ISO 1600 and even 3200 that still result in exhibit quality prints at 16x24 inches, depending on subject, lighting, shutter speed and probably a whole kettle full of other intangible factors. The M8 was a "gateway drug" for this photographer, as he has decided to upgrade to an M10. He took the affordable bait and now he is hooked! 😄

I bought my M8 around a half a year ago. It was my second M mount camera (The first one was R-D1s). I enjoyed this camera very much, but several days ago i faced the first problem with this camera. Suddenly, shutter button and on/off lever became a bit off. I mean that on/off lever became much more tight and expousure lock position moved a way futher than it was before. A few dozens of millimeters behind shutter release itself. It became a common situation, when i want to lock my exposure, but because of this problem i occasionally took a photo. i found some old topics on similar issues, but photos with dismount of shutter button were unavalible. Has anyone faced the same or similar problem? What is the key to solve this problem? Can it be done at home by only myself?

So recently bought an M8 from eBay, price is not too bad but that’s because there is no back screen glass top, LCD panel flawless, just no top glass. So seller put a GIOTTOS Schott glass on top of the LCD panel, tiny tiny smaller than the original glass, it’s not been attached but suspended on top of LCD cause there is ridge all around it. I’m wondering if there is still any Leica M8 OG screen window on the market? Or even after market one? Kinda worry about this because it’s actually not fully sealed as photo shown, but the GIOTTOS screen protector seems pretty solid tho. Or maybe as a 17 yrs old camera, I just leave it there as it is, no break no fix? I’m not an adventure guys, just bought this camera for family shoting or road trip. need help guys! Thank you!
