  1. This camera has been on the shelf for a few years and is only marginally operable now. I'd like to bring it back. Among its many problems: Won't format or overwrite sd card properly, ccd seems to have bee scratched, sometime does not write images to the sd card, On the monitor, I read something like "L083673," presumably the file name of what should have been written, or worse a blank appears - in the case there's a total freeze; the only way to turn the camera off is to remove the battery. So, among other questions: what is the max size of the sd card that the M Mono will take and what is the high end write speed? I am currently testing a different sd card, but observations, consolations and sympathy notes would be appreciated.
  2. Hi guys, After idly wondering for the past few years how to figure out the shutter count on my M Monochrome mk1, I finally did a little research. I found this excellent (i.e. very easy even for me to use) Leica app on the Leica Rumors site - https://leicarumors.com/2010/11/02/free-software-for-viewing-leica-m9-images-and-exif-data.aspx/ Dragged the most recent file I shot onto the app, and found that the shutter actuations on my camera number 36,950. Does anyone think that's a high number? I know that pro Nikon and Canon cameras are over-engineered, and their shutters are designed to exceed 250,000 but the M9/M Monochrom mk 1, I think, is not designed for that kind of high mileage. Leica were kind enough to replace my sensor last year (for free), and I just wonder how many more useful years are left on the shutter of my cherished camera. Anyway, if you've ever wondered about your shutter count, do get the app - it's incredibly simple to use. Best wishes all, Colin
  3. Within the M system, If we want to make black and white prints we have the following options: Film M camera and film, M240/M-P conversion to B&W, M Monochrom version one and M Monochrom typ 246. I must admit that so far I have never seen a B&W print from the typ 246 fine print in real time, only on the web; it seems that M cameras of any kind in these parts (midwest USA) are only slightly more prevalent than unicorns. From what I can see online though, the image quality of typ 246 prints when created by a skilled printer is simply astounding; by all appearances, typ 246 prints look for all the world like they equal or exceed 4x5 inch prints made in a wet darkroom. I have shot a lot of B&W film in my M4-P and I still love that camera and the process of film photography. However, the typ 246 is a compelling camera in light of the printed image quality it produces (based on my limited observations) and other considerations such as a maximum ISO of 25,000 and the speed/convenience of digital shooting and printing. For those who own the typ 246 camera and make fine prints, can you provide some insight regarding printed image quality? Any thoughts on the process of printing from typ 246 image files will be greatly appreciated; is it best to shoot in compressed DNG mode or uncompressed DNG? Thanks in advance to any and all who reply. I am seriously considering acquiring a Monochrom 246 and will be grateful for any insight and thoughts shared.
  4. I shot these test images a few weeks back but only recently had the chance to compile them into a meaningful article. Up for your viewing pleasure is a comprehensive comparison of the MM246 vs. the M9M vs. the M240 converted to B&W, using the 50 APO, on a static still life subject under controlled conditions. I know I'm a little late to the party as others have been putting out some interesting and well-done comparisons. For my version of the test, I aimed to compare optimized images from each camera at each ISO level against one another. I like to take a real world approach and in my world, I don't look at out of camera results. Part of the evaluation of a camera should be how it responds to post processing and the final result, no? B&W ISO Showdown: Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) vs. M Monochrom (M9) vs. M (Typ 240) Have a look and let me know what you think. Thanks!

  6. Hey guys, I just posted a part one review of my M Monochrom here: Leica M Monochrom review – a real life review – part one | Bo Photography Check it out if you feel like it. It is very non-technical, and more about the usage of of the camera and I will go further into post processing techniques on the files within the next weeks.
  7. I did mention this on another thread, but as it really belongs in the Post Processing forum: As of version 3.6.2, PhotoRaw and PhotoRaw Lite for the iPad and iPhone support M Monochrom images. Version 3.6.2 is available on the App Store now. Sandy
