  1. Special Auction Services, in the south of England, is holding a Fine Photographica auction on 23rd July 2019. It features over 80 Leica items, formerly the property of a distinguished Swedish photographer and collector. In the 1950s and 1960s he gathered an impressive collection of rare Leica cameras, lenses and accessories. Some of them date back to the 1920s and are very hard to find these days, but the rarest item by far is a Leica Gun, codenamed RIFLE, so hard to find that it is thought only around 20 to 30 examples exist today. Here are links to the sale: https://auctions.specialauctionservices.com/m/view-auctions/catalog/id/23?page=2 ttps://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10335 E. Leitz Inc. of New York developed the Leica Gun at the suggestion of Attilio Gatti, a celebrated Italian-born, explorer, author and film maker who led thirteen African safaris between the 1920s and 1940s. He urgently needed a hand-held support for the long telephoto lenses he fitted to his Leica camera for rapid sequence wildlife photography and Leitz obliged. The Leica Gun first appeared in 1938 at a cost of $465 with a 20cm lens and screw-mount camera, but it did not sell well and disappeared in around 1940. This particular example is fitted with a IIIf and has been in the owner's family since 1951: it is expected to sell for in excess of £100,000. Other Leica rarities will include a Leica lens turret OROLF from 1960, an Elmax f/3.5 50mm lens, a Thambar 90mm lens, a Noctilux f/1.2 lens from 1968, an OLLUX lens hood, a Leitz New York Leicamotor 1400 from 1967 and a Leica-Motor MOOLY from 1938.

  3. Taken during a walk around a flea market in Antwerp, Belgium, I thought of the memories encapsulated in these small frames and now offered for sale. I tried a b&w conversion, and then an antique preset in LR CC but at the end of the day the original was the best in my opinion. Gerry
  4. Hello everyone, I'm new to the Leica Forum, but a longtime participant on photo.net and APUG.org. I've been busy digitizing my large, but incomplete, collection of Leica Photography magazines from 1949 through 1981. I'm working on obtaining permission to make the PDFs of these old magazines available, but, in the meantime, here's an annotated index I've prepared of my collection. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5tXvOBB2mPrS0dfNkZaZkwwMms/view?usp=sharing The old advertisements (for Leitz products as well as a lot of other photography ephemera) in this magazine are fantastic, as are the debates on technique, equipment, chemistry, etc. Think the fuss about Rodinal edge effects is new? There's an article from the Fall 1963 issue that discusses them. Also, if you have old issues of Leica Photography magazine that fill in any gaps in my collection, please let me know! I'm especially eager to get my hands on Volume 7, No. 1 (Spring 1954). All the best, Dan

    LFI article on X1

The latest issue of LFI (3/2010) has just reached me and includes the promised article on the background design and development of the X1 camera. For owners and aspirants it makes very interesting reading and explains why the Summicron lens option was ruled out on size and bulk grounds. ("Twice the diameter") While many will regret this decision, I think it was the right one. Incorporating a specially designed Elmarit added more to the size than I had anticipated but, having got used to it in practice, I am convinced that it was the right decision for a compact camera. After-all, compare the size of the X1 Elmarit with the Digilux 2 Summicron and the latter is feeding a smaller sensor. The superb high ISO performance is more than adequate compensation for the sacrifice of one F-stop, exciting though it would have been to see a Summicron in place. There is direct reference to the initiative shown in Asia (Japan?) in presenting the original design concept for the X1, which is shown in a comparative photograph, not just a drawing. Interestingly the control dials occupied a more central position on the body top, but were repositioned to improve actual use of the controls. I wish I could have had an input to that decision because, although the original dials were smaller, I would like to have seen the repositioned aperture dial, (the more vulnerable of the two), finished with a neatly beveled periphery. I think that would have reduced the tendency for inadvertent rotation. As usual, the whole LFI issue tries to please everyone. The opening portfolio of twelve pages, is twice the length I would have chosen; but that seems to be an editorial inclination to let a portfolio roll on and on and on! Saving half of the pagination would have made space for what I believe readers would choose, viz another general interest feature, perhaps devoted to use of older Leica cameras and lenses. That would help the continuity and flow of Leica lore! There is copious coverage of the prizewinning entries in the 35mm lens competition for which X1 cameras were prizes. Again it is difficult to make an objective judgment. Having reviewed the subjects chosen, from 5000 entries, I doubt that my general 'every day' subject choice would ever meet the judges' favour. Of the twelve top entries reproduced, only one was taken with a non-Leica lens. That fact must have pleased the sponsors.
