1. I dropped my M Monochrom onto a concrete pavement some 18 months ago, knocking the rangefinder out of alignment. I thought it would be expensive to fix and, being skint at the time, I just went back to shooting black and white film on my Leica M2 and M5. Leica have since fixed the M Monochrom, and replaced the sensor into the bargain, and they didn't charge me a penny, not even for postage. To say I'm happy with this outcome would be an understatement. But I'm glad I got back into film again. It really does have a magical quality that even the M Monochrom can't quite duplicate. Film isn't anywhere near as sharp, certainly, but that's part of the charm. There's a kind of timeless beauty in those grainy and imperfect images. Anyway, I attach a recent shot (March 2016) I took in my home city of Glasgow. It's on Ilford HP5 pushed to 800 ISO. I shot it in torrential rain, on my M2 fitted with 28mm Summicron ASPH, wide open at f2. I've used the M Monochrom very carefully in the rain, but I don't think I'd have risked it in those conditions. Best wishes all, Colin

The Copiest

I took this in the Louvre in Paris in 2002. I have just scanned it to add it to my archive. The camera was certainly the M6 and probably the lens was the 35mm Summicron I had back then. It was taken on Agfa Vista 800 colour film, which I have no rational explanation for now because I can't imagine me ever using it. The grain is pretty big, but through judicious use of LRCC I think I have gotten away with it at this size, or at least I hope so! I do like the result. Gerry
4. Hello everybody! I just got a Leica Monochrom and am puzzled: I shoot in JPG. When I view the picture on the rear screen of my camera, it displays a lot of grain. I don't see this grain however, when I view the image on my computer. Even more mysterious: My husband's Monochrom doesn't display this kind of grain on the rear screen image! Are my camera settings faulty, or is it a Software problem and I need to turn my camera in for repair?
5. Hi, when I want to shot in BW with the M8 I choose DNG+Jpeg and the Black ^ White setting. Viewing the files in Lightroom I really like the jpgs created by the camera. The grain is really amazing. Unfortunately I can´t get this grain structure with the DNG file. This grain appears normally when I use ISO 1250. With DNG it just looks like crappy noise. Does anyone how to achieve the same grain effect with the DNG files in Lightroom? thanks
6. Hello, I'm new to this forum and this is my first posting. I am the second owner of an M8. Had a hot pixel which caused a vertical band so I sent it back to Leica NJ. The vertical band wasn't that bad but for only $175, they took care of it for me. Just got it back from Leica NJ but, now I have a strange problem. I took it out for a full day of shooting (on a sunny, cold day) and when I returned and I plugged it into my computer, I was floored. Horrible grain on most images. I thought my ISO must have switched to a super high setting on accident. I checked the EXIF on the images and it was for sure on ISO 640. The grain should not be this bad at ISO 640...and it's baaad! Is there anything someone can advise on this problem? I've included sample pics from this day of shooting (both good and bad grain...you can tell which is which). Both were taken within the same day, same setting, same lens (28mm Elmarit f/2.8 w/UV-IR filter), etc... 7. Hi, I've used Ilford's XP2 since it was invented. I like its smooth tones, latitude and convenience. I used to process it myself, but recently have used a lab. The same lab developed these two films, although a couple of months apart. One film has considerably more grain than the other. There were differences in lighting conditions, but although with chromogenic films grain varies with film density, I would not expect such a huge difference. There may possibly have been a slight difference in exposure value (i.e. one film shot at 320 ISO and the other at 400). Can anyone account for this difference? It makes the grainier film real "pepper and salt" and hard to scan and print. The other film is what I expect and produces lovely smooth prints. I have tried to scan and process identically and have used the same, small amount of Smart Sharp on both. Both crops are at 100%: Any suggestions - could it be the processing? Thanks, Tim
