  1. Hello, I’m sure this topic has been discussed in the past, but I haven’t found it per se in the forum: if present, could you point me to it? Anyway, I am looking at acquiring a Leica 35mm lens to go with my 50mm Summilux from 1988 (is that ver. 2?). Image quality is great with most lenses from Leica, it’s the character that changes, and I could be as happy with a modern as with a classic look - although keeping a similar character to the Mandler era Summilux could be a plus. I’m not worried about maximum speed, but I was hoping to be at least at Summicron speed. My main concern is not to have to battle too much with focus shift, because I want to use the full range of aperture values, but also shoot wide open for available light. That means that a Summarit would be a bit of a compromise for speed. Keep in mind that I can’t afford anything close to the Summilux FLE pricewise, my budget doesn’t stretch that much at all. Any advice? Thanks in advance!!
  2. I just wanted to verify if focus shift is a design flaw on 24mm Lux or something it can be fixed by adjustment. Since this lens has forgiving depth of field so the focus shift will only noticeable at the following conditions.... 1) at close subjects that's less than 1.5 meters, please set yours at 0.7 meter on the barrel to test. (don't push all the way, some lenses might go below 0.7m that your viewfinder doesn't) 2) provided your lens and camera are perfectly calibrated, which supposed to be no issue wide open at f/1.4 at any range. The focus shift will happen started from half click increment. Greater than f/2.8 will stop seeing focus shift just simply becoz this lens has very wide DOF. I use this lens for close subject intensively so please don't tell me how to use it or how you use it -- thank you in advance. I start noticing all my pictures are out of focus between 0.7 to 2m when aperture is set to f/2 plus or minus half stop. So I did a test at home to confirm my copy does have focus shift between f/1.8, f/2 and f/2.4 (I include half click). My lens @f/1.4 is perfect at any range, every click closing (not step) will result in two inches back focus, @f/2 is worst at about 5 inches total. Beyond that range like f/2.8 is fine, it starts to recover a wide range of DOF - some called it zone focusing. If it's not a design flaw, then I need to speak to a Leica technician who is going to fix this lens. Thank you very much.
  3. Hello everybody, I know that Summicron 35 Asph. (v5), does focus shift a bit if used on digital, while not as much as Summilux Asph pre-FLE or others, older design. I've used one on film for years without any problem back in the 90s, sold it many years ago, and recently I've bought another one, used, for my M digital. I'm not looking for perfection, nor doing endless testing on focus chart to split hairs, but this one seems to show too much focus shift even in real pictures: please look at these samples (I have many many others, and, by the way, when I engage the EVF I can clearly see the difference between the sharp, magnified image in EVF and the yet-not-coincident one in rangefinder patch at f/4, so I can exclude a focusing error from my part) (I use Dropbox to upload full-res samples) First sample, f/2, focus on the first plant (a couple of meters away from the camera), seems to me spot-on (and a pretty good wide open performance) https://www.dropbox.com/s/6kq47e913lugejp/216%20f2%20plant.jpg?dl=0 Second one, f/4, focus on the same plant... but sharpness has shifted to the plant behind the first one, and to the background: the plant in the foreground is clearly less sharp than in the wide open shot. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0qej8xtdvxn7042/215%20f4%20plant.jpg?dl=0 Third one, f/4, focus on the little shovel's handle... now first plant seems to be in focus as it should: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2v9kjqn4o2gbwxx/214%20f4%20handle.jpg?dl=0 Should I return the lens, or any Summicron 35 v5 behaves more or less that way when used on M240? (today is the last day I can return it, by the way) Thanks in advance, any advice will be appreciated. S. edit: fixed link URLs
  4. I currently own the 35mm Summicron 35 asph (v1) and a Summilux 35mm asph fle. Both was recently serviced in Wetzlar, along with the camera as well (M10). All my other lenses was serviced at the same time. I am experiencing focus shift at infinity with both of my 35mm lenses. This happened before servicing, and also now after servicing, with both lenses, on the same camera body. I don't experience any focus shift at infinity with my other lenses (Lux 50 ASPH, Elmar-M 24/3.8 ASPH, Macro-Elmar-M 90/4). Summilux 35 ASPH FLE @ infinity position on the lens: f/1.4-f/2: no focus shift f/2.8-f/8: focus shift Summicron 35 ASPH @ infinity position on the lens: f/2-f/2.8: no focus shift f/4-f/8: focus shift Both lenses align perfectly with the rangefinder at infinity, but after doing some testing by focus stacking, and also using magnification and focus peaking with the EVF, I can easily detect that optimum sharpness at infinity is achieved well before the infinity stop on the lens. The exception is wide open (f/2 on summicron, f/1.4 on summilux), which focuses correctly at the infinity stop. I achieve maximum sharpness on a distant landscape scene with the affected apertures (f/2.8-f/8) at the following settings on the distance scale of the lens (see attachment of the lenses): Is this normal behavior on the 35mm Leica's? Or should I send the lenses back again? Both lenses focus correctly at other distances from what I can see. It is only at infinity that I am experiencing this issue. And if viewing an image at 100% the difference is easily seen.
  5. Hi folks... just wanted to open up a thread to hear your experience with these 3 lenses - on the issue of focus shit: Noctilux - I have struggled between getting a f0.95 and f1v4 and decided to go for the latter... however i tried 2 copies of the v4 and both have focus shift problems at MFD (i shot a lot of pictures at 0.7m-2m range) and I returned them... a few leica hobbyist nearby told me that this is a common problem with the f1v4 (and f0.95 as well!!!) - one of them claimed that he has personally played around with 6-7 copies of f1v4 and ALL have focus shift problems... so just wanna to hear your thoughts and experience on this? or maybe it's me who's being too picky??? Summilux 50mm E43 - similar problem... tried 2 copies and have the same focus shift issue... this old lens is great, gives amazing colors and rendering... but again, is the focus shift issue universal with this lens? Summilux 75mm - I have never tried this lens but this is definitely going into my shopping list... but I am already quite beat with my bad experience on focus shift with the Noct and E43 so just wondering if this lens would have the same problem, or should I just simply accept it? Thanks a lot in advance...
  6. Hello ! There are quite a lot of threads in this forum dealing with a possible (aperture dependent) focus shift when using the Summilux 1.4/35 asp. lens. Does anybody know whether this issue does also concern the aspheric Summicron ? Do the older (non-aspheric) versions of these lenses have this problem, too ? Many thanks for any answer.
