  1. Just want to share my experience which I made with a nearly mint Beseler 23C enlarger which I got from a friend of mine for free (in fact it is now my 4th enlarger after getting a 45M, 45MXT, and a 67S II). After having set up my existing enlargers for large format (4x5") and small format negatives printing, I planned to use the 23C for medium format size negatives (6x7 cm) since I also had a Schneider-Kreuznach 80/5.6 enlarger lens. What I was missing is the fitting negative holder for 6x7 cm - I checked online and found a few horrendously expensive used negative holders (the new ones from Beseler were even more expensive). I checked in my clutter box where I kept other scavenged darkroom material, and I found an Omega-enlarger based 6x7 cm negative holder. Glad I didn't buy any of the overpriced Beseler ones - because actually the Omega one fits in portrait mode nicely into the 23C enlarger. Of course there is a little gap between closed upper bellow unit and the holder, but I found it is not an issue at all (no light leaks out to an extent that it would endanger the printing process during exposure). I didn't find it described online anywhere that Omega negative holders can be used in certain Beseler enlargers! The Schneider-Kreuznach 80/5.8 lens also handles the 6x7 cm negative size well with sharp corners when stopped down a bit (I normally use my enlarger lenses at f/11). Didn't find this information mentioned anywhere either - only posts online about the Nikkor 80/5.6 enlarger lens which is able to handle 6x7 cm negative size, too. Does anybody else made similar experiences and used parts of different enlarger types on another to make things work? Or using an enlarger lens less known or supposedly not to work well with a specific negative size but it still works okay? Please share some low cost - big gain experiences!
  2. One guy was offering a complete darkroom equipment for 50 euros incl. Durst M605 bw enlarger with Schneider companon lens (he doesn't mention which one). I will go and see its condition but I have very limited knowledge. So I need your help. I would like to ask what should I look for? Only things that I am think of the film carriers, fungus/scratches on the lens, timer, bulb. Thanks a lot in advance!
  3. Hello, I am looking to buy an enlarger so that I can start to make my own B/W prints. I am looking at getting a Leitz Focomat 1C color auto focusing enlarger that I found for $500 (comes with lens)..does that sound like a reasonable price? I just had a question about what the difference is between this one, and an enlarger that is set up for B/W? What is the difference? People seem to say that you can use a color enlarger for B/W but are there any disadvantages to doing that? This will be my first go at it, so I don't need it to be any more complicated than it needs to be, but I also want something nice so I don't have to "buy it twice" down the road..how do you guys find this enlarger? Any advice would be great! Thanks everyone. Best, Peter
  4. I'm surfing enlargers and there are a LOT out there. I'm interested in sort of a "turn key" one; aka one that doesn't have issues that I have to solve before I get going. I realize that this one isn't the cheapest one out there but it seems like it's in good shape and it's cheap-ish. My question is: is this acceptable for a beginner doing 8x10's or smaller and does it look complete for the enlarging part of things? Any help is appreciated. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Black-BESELER-Printmaker-35-Dark-Room-Photo-Enlarger-Stand-/231672476980?hash=item35f0c17534:g:-SoAAOSwLVZV5P6y
  5. Hello everyone, I recently bought a Leitz Focomat II and discovered that when printing from the 60mm Focotar lens that two dark lines forming a triangle appear on either side of my prints. I also noticed that there are four light spots hitting the rim of the lens (these increase in size when you open up the aperture) and I'm pretty sure this is related to the problem. I'v looked at the enlarger from every angle and checked that things are all in their proper place I have attached images to demonstrate what I'm describing above. You can see the two dark lines forming a triangle clearly in the sky above the lion's head (the same is mirrored on the other side of the print but harder to see), and there are a couple shots of the light spots hitting the rim of the lens. Could anyone please tell me what might be causing these light flares and how I could fix the problem. All insights are greatly appreciated! Rene
  6. hi all I have no idea what to do, i am looking to buy a V35 Focomat Enlarger of a friend. 7. ...quick darkroom question - has anyone out there ever successfully used a Focomat V35 with a Focotar-2 50mm lens? I just tried to (with and without extension tube 17675) but do not seem to be able to focus the image manually. Does not make sense to me. I would particularly appreciate feedback from folks with actual experience with the above combination. Thanks.
  8. I picked up a V35 with variocontrast module second hand on the weekend, after spending a few hours printing with it on Saturday I'm absolutely in love! Does anyone have an electronic copy of the instruction manual? I found one on the web however it is in French only!
