  1. I'm seeing dust accumulate INSIDE my viewfinder on my 5 year old Leica M10 which I use professionally. The camera is always wrapped in chamois leather when in my bag. It got really bad this weekend when shooting a story involving low angled sunlight to the point where i couldn't see to focus so just guessed the distance, fortunately i was using a 21mm so most frames were in focus. Is this a known problem ?? This is my 4th or 5th Digital M camera...all have failed in the past...but my 35 year old M6 still works fine...what does that say about technology or build quality ? Leica Mayfair are supposed to be getting in touch ASAP...lets hope this gets resolved soonest....the Fuji or Sony system beckons ???
  2. Hi everyone, Photography has been my love for over 30 years now. I've owned a lot of camera's (film and digital). I recently switched from medium format Fujifilm (GFX-50r, which was big and heavy like a brick) to Leica M11. A dream came true. I love everything about the camera except two things. First is dust on the sensor. I only use one lens and never take it of. Still there's more and more dust on the sensor over time. Is this normal? Isn't the camera sealed? But my GREAT problem is... motion blur. I've never experienced it this way. I know it's said to be a resolution thing, but coming from 50MP medium format, I was quite used to high resolution and never experienced these kind of problems. I'm using a new Summilux 35/1.4 (not the newest, close range focussing version, but the previous). I'm having most problems shooting (almost) wide open. It's nearly impossible to take a non-motion-blurred shot. It's not focussing, That looks okay from a distance. But zooming in... everything has motion blur (or something else?). Even at 1/6500s... Of course I have been practising a lot with the M11. Please look at this test shot. Looks okay, but then... when you zoom in... I know, I know this is an extreme close-up, but still I was used to a quite sharp (motion free) part of the picture, using bij GFX camera. I do not pixel peep at all! I really hope someone can give me the golden tip. It's driving me crazy and I'm thinking about selling my dream camera. This really makes me sad. Leica M11 ISO 64 1/6500s F/1.4 Processed in Capture one (used Light too, no difference). Thank you in advance!
  3. Hey folks - I just purchased a secondhand Q on eBay. It arrived today and I've been really enjoying the feel after shooting with a 240 over the last many years. But when I started seeing the images in Lightroom my heart sank. Can you take a look at this and tell me what I'm seeing here? Looks like the sensor is corrupted somehow? Thank you!
  4. Hey everyone! I have been noticing a small hair in the upper right hand corner of my developed film scans. Here is a link: http://imgur.com/a/SjQK8 Was wondering if anyone could give e some suggestions as to where this could be coming from? It seems to move around slightly, and I have used a rocket air blaster on the inside of the camera + lens with no results. Using a lecia m6 ttl with a 35mm summicron f2 asph Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.
  5. I just wanted to share something that might help others in their quest for less dust on negs. I am a noob when it comes to developing, and my first several rolls of film were horrible. There were so many scratches, dust, dirt, dog hair and crap on them I thought I'd never create a crap free neg, but I stumbled on a fool proof solution for me! Here are the elements: 1.) I run a hot shower for two minutes to bring the dust down in the bathroom where the negs will hang (I do it at the end of the washing step). 2.) I turn off the air conditioner and put a towel over the floor vent to minimize circulating air. 3.) I only remove the film from the tank IN the bathroom ready for hanging, no walking around with it. It goes from the tank to the clips. 4.) (I think this is key) I pour the photo-flo from the canister down both sides of my film right after hanging. I think it washes crap off the film...that's my guess. 5.) (another key point I think) I get the scanner ready for the film before it's dry and when I go into the bathroom, I cut the negs off of the clips at the bottom and the top, I don't try to clean off the accumulated moisture at the clips. Once I have a neg in hand, I GO STRAIGHT to the scanner and feed it into the scanner. (a 20 foot trip) 6.) I also wear white-lint-free-cotton-inspection-gloves when handling the negs. That's it. Since I've been doing that I've had to clean a total of two TINY dust spots off of my negs in 4 rolls developed. I'm astounded how well it works! No dust at all. Just thought someone might benefit from something here; I know that I was pulling my hair out with my previous results.
  6. I discovered massive dust behind the cover glass of the M10 viewfinder. Can not be removed from outside. No other dust in the camera at all. Never had that problem with any other M. Has anyone experienced this problem too?
  7. Hello everyone, I am new to Leica and forum (not quite bought the camera yet!), and seek some help I have read many threads over the last week on this forum so I am more familiar with the Q and any issues. I have demoed a Q at the Mayfair store London, took a few pics outside the shop, then viewed at home on a big monitor. Very nice indeed ! The lens on their demo was pretty dirty, marks and finger prints all over it ! I didn't know the Q was to order from Mayfair so I popped into another Leica dealer in London who was very helpful to ask if they had stock etc. After reading several posts regarding dust on sensor appearing, my concern is what happens outside of warranty. I just spoke to the Leica dealer (not Mayfair), and he shot me down in flames and said it doesn't exist and can't happen. We chatted further and he said drop it in to us and we send to Leica. Outside of warranty, he couldn't reply (for this non existent issue !) so I am no wiser or confident, how it would be handled. Dropping it back to London would mean a 5 hour round trip so not on the doorstep ! I am just trying to gain some idea of cost of cleaning outside the warranty. Does anyone have experience of costings, I guess this may be difficult as its prob around 2 yrs or approaching since it came out ? Out of all the little quirks the Leica has, this is stopping me buying one until I have a clearer idea on the cleaning. Appreciate its not every Q that suffers. I really like the Q, image quality is fantastic looking at pictures I am after a 2nd camera, fixed lens to go with my Fuji X-T2. I know the obvious thing would be to buy a 100f but I cannot get away from the Leica quality ! Thanks for any help Gill
  8. I recently bought a used "mint" Summilux 35 ASPH FLE and upon receiving it I discovered the inside of the lens to be extremely dusty. Needless to say, I returned it immediately. I do wonder how this could be possible though - the lens was sold to the previous owner in 2016/10 so it's been used for about a year. I just can't believe a one-year-old lens can have this much dust in it. Is there some type of design flaw with the FLE version that makes it prone to dust? I'm thinking about getting a new one so I don't want the lens to be like this after a year...

  10. Hey everyone, I just got my m2 off ebay and had a look through the viewfinder only to see 2 main very noticeable spots. I attached a picture and the one on the lower left looks much dimmer and looks like a dot and a hair almost? It's kind of light greyish and I think it's a particle or dust but I'm not quite sure. However, in the middle the speck seems much darker (basically black) and more prominent. Could this be separation or is it another speckle of dust (imo it doesn't seem like one). If this has happened to you or you know what it is, any input on how to fix or your thoughts would would be greatly appreciated! Also the shutter curtain on the front seems a little pushed forward and I can see the whole seam on it, is that normal? The curtain works 100% fine but I'm not sure if Im supposed to see the whole seam and overlap of the two curtains. On the back it stays slightly open by 1mm or so (didn't include a pic sorry)... should it cause a light leak? The camera was also recently CLA'd. Lastly, the viewfinder has some "gold specks" which I think is separation, but I hope i'm wrong. Please help if you can clarify, recommend a fix, or give any thoughts on ^^. Overall the camera seems amazing and none of the things I mentioned has really bothered me, but if I can learn more about them then it would be great. Thanks in advance, Ashley
  11. I'm thinking of going to the Holi festival in Delhi (the coloured dust thrown everywhere one) this year and obviously want to take my M240. I can throw on a 15mm lens which means I can pretty much point and shoot but what is the best way to protect the whole thing. Is it freezer bags and tape are are there custom options? Many thanks in advance, Dave.
  12. I've recently acquired a very cheap 35mm Summicron v4 M in very good shape. However, the front and back elements are filled with dust (or fungus). The edges don't have any obvious fungus or anything. The are only specs here and there, but mostly in the center of the elements. What do you guys think? Is it dust or fungus? Here are some pictures:
  13. Hi, I have an issue with dust in my M10. It is not this often ( Nearby zero ) that I change my lenses. I mostly shoot with my 35mm 1.4 FLE. When I have changed a lens, i do a dust check. Of course, I check the glasses to make sure they are dust free. If it is very sunny, I prefer to shoot with f11 or f16, but always when I see the images results, there is dust on the images. What tips can you give to avoid dust in the M10?
  14. How often do folks typically need to wet clean their SL sensors? Lately my SL is picking up quite a bit of dust, and I seem to need to clean about once every 8 weeks or so, and I am not in a particularly dusty environment when I change lenses.
  15. Hello, I just joined this forum and am hoping to get an opinion. Today, I received my first Leica, a Leica Q which I had bought through ebay and found (what I think is) dust on the sensor. The seller had confirmed to me that even at f/16 there are no problems. It isn't noticeable in most other pictures I take so I am wondering how others would handle this situation and if you would consider it reason to complain to the seller and ask for a refund? I am thinking that this could lower resale value even though I am not thinking I will resell anytime soon. Btw, I contacted Leica in Wetzlar and the lady on the phone was sure that there was not an update to the Q in 2017 which sealed the battery opening better against dust (which I had read on here). She even contacted two other Leica employees which both confirmed the same. Thank you Sevi
  16. So I was ripping around in an off-road vehicle in Sedona and taking some beautiful landscape photos with my Q2. All of that off-roading caused the Q2 to get covered in some fine dust and sand and while the camera worked fine, you could feel the dust inside the aperture ring and dial—it was just a little grindy and you could tell it needed to be cleaned, but otherwise it was perfect. The camera got shipped off to Leica in New Jersey and 2 weeks later they came back with a repair starting point of $2,600! Apparently, they didn't open up the camera or anything and just do a general look at things and an assumption prior to the true estimate. My shop told me they wrote very basic notes - "Damages by sand - Need to adjust auto focus, replace parts, check, adjust, clean" - it seemed very templated. They did not say what parts needed to be replaced (according to my shop.) They did say shipping was included. Just wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. Maybe the actual repair will cost less? Should I push back on them? Do I have other options outside of Leica? Thank you!
  17. Hello everyone, I just spotted some white particles on the far edge/periphery of one of the lens element of my summarit 75 2.5 . I bought this lens used two months ago and at the time I could not see anything. I cannot say 100% but I suspect those particles were not present. They are hard to perceived. I only spotted them while taking pictures of my first born this morning when I was about to fit the cap onto the lens and had a look at inside. The sun was very bright and I could perfectly see them, them were almost shining like crystals ?? Pictures are not affected at all and I am only worried for the case of a fungus. I do not care about dust, but this is the first time I see something like this, hence me asking for your help/advises. Because they are on the far periphery of the lens element they are hard to picture. For the pictures below I had to flash the front element with a led light and it creates some ghosts/artefacts. For instance you can see that this "line" of particles appears twice, mirroring itself onto the next lens element. They only appear on one side of the lens and I also pictured the other "clean" side as a reference. Pictures are not great but this is what I have for now. I Thank you for input and wish you a pleasant week, Best, Fabien
  18. Hi guys, I recently picked up a nice classic M6 with a voigtlander nokton 35mm 1.4 I'm really enjoying the setup. I live on a cattle station in western Queensland, Australia and usually take a camera with me when mustering (herding cattle). As it can get quite dusty, I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on protecting the camera/lens from said dust apart from the usual. I won't be changing lenses as I only have the one at the moment but would expect to pick some dust up when loading film etc. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Butch
  19. Here I want to share my experience on scanning scratched negatives. I thought it might be helpful since recently there are many questions posted on this. I've never owned an ICE capable scanner, so I had to find a solution for covering scratches on colour negatives when scanning them with my Konica Minolta film scanner. Post processing is not adequate in some cases. So 6 years back, I purchased a liquid solution called Rexton Scratch-Match from Adorama. It worked great! You just apply liberally over the frame you want to scan, it doesn't evaporate quickly and stays there. You wipe it off later, doesn't leave any residue. You can also clean the film with your favourite cleaner afterwards. 6 years fast forward, I am no longer living in the States, and similar products are not available for airmail postage due to harmful/toxic properties. So I had to find a local alternative. TURPENTINE! Yes, it is the same stuff, smells the same, and works the same, and cheaper! I read somewhere that Scratch-Match had some Chloroform (now a regulated substance) added to Turpentine. But apparently, Turpentine by itself works OK, too. I used distilled filtered Turpentine from Daler-Rowney. For better results apply with a flat painter's brush. Note that this solution doesn't help emulsion scratches. Below is the proof. I deliberately scratched (a bit too much actually) a negative strip and tested for you. Cheers, Koray
