Hello fellow M8 users, I am very happy to announce that I finished the tool mentioned in the thread M8 goes uncompressed DNG! It creates 16bit (acually 14bit in a 16bit container) DNG files from the M8 RAW files with slightly more pixels and much more discrete values compared to the 8bit standard DNG. I even set up a website with download, comment function, contact form and whatnot... even though I am really not familiar with web programming so please be lenient if it is not as polished as this site here for example. The command-line tool is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, so I am now looking forward to getting some input after you tested it on your own files. You can find more information on m8raw2dng.de. I am trying to make the program as good as possible (because I am using it myself on a daily basis). To achieve this I thought it clever to share it with the community even though I had to create a completely new software from scratch in C++ even though I already have a running version in Matlab with more functionality. But I think that'll change as I focus now on the C++ version. I invite you to share this information with other M8 users on other forums, flickr groups, wherever you like. Hi, I'm just a new Leica Q user. I found slightly difference between JPEG and DNG. My personally I really love jpeg output color. It not too vivid and give cool look. However it really hard to change JPEG White balance in Lightroom Is there anyway to archive JPEG look in DNG? Here are example (JPEG left, DNG right).

I just firgure out that my Leica M10, the DNG files opened and exported to JPG by photoshop are always brighter and less contrast than the original JPG generated by M10 body.Is there something wrong? This is the jpg exported from dng. And this is original jpg by body

Ich habe RAW-Dateien aus der D-Lux 7 mit dem Adobe-DNG-Converter in DNG-Dateien umgewandelt und dann in Lightroom 6 importiert. Dort werden die Dateien ganz kurz in Farbe dargestellt, dann allerdings dauerhaft nur in SW. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit, die RAW-Dateien in LR6 als Farbbilder zu importieren, ohne auf das aktuelle LR-Abo umsteigen zu müssen?

Hi I have just came back from a trip where i used my Q2 for the first time massively and when i am importing the color are just becoming totally off. I tried the trial of Lightroom CC Classic and it definitely can show the right color. See below screenshots. There were no adjustment made at all in all case. Anyone having similar color issue with the perpetual version of Lightroom ? Many thanks -
Hey guys! So last week I went to my local Leica Store to check out the M10 - which is wonderful - but a tad bit expensive. At the same time I played around with the Q which seriously impressed me. So the next day I bought one. Do I really need it?- probably not. I own an M9 which I use daily and an S 006 which I use for shoots with Models. On both cameras I basically stick to one lens. Now, I've added this to the list of stuff people want from the new Firmware, but wanted to address it separately and a little more in depth none the less. The Qs DNGs are fixed at 41.3 MB. Compared to the ca. 18MB of my M9 (18 megapixels), ca. 24 MB of M240 (24 megapixels) and S (006)'s 38 MB for 37 Megapixels. Basically all the other Leicas I have owned have file sizes comparable to the megapixels of the sensor. - so why is this different in the Q ? The M10 according to a recent interview has compressed DNGs which are lossless and smaller again. - so Leica does care about the file size apparently. My two questions now: Will Leica address this in the next FW update ? (I know this is a question no one will be able to answer for sure, but I'd love to see your educated guesses) Is there an option to realistically compress the files more or less lossless in Order to save disk space? - I know there will be comments telling me that disk space is cheap - an it is - but I find it mostly just annoying to have the amount of HDDs I already have and will have to continue to buy in order to save my files. Also it's quite annoying in terms of power my laptop needs to load and work on the images ...- 2 replies

Hi, I know that Lightroom is supporting the Q's crop mode in DNG, meaning it will automatically crop to 35mm or 50mm aspect with the ability to recover the 28mm frame. I know that Capture One unfortunately do not support the crop modes and will just display the full 28mm. I'd like to test the feature on other RAW converter before purchasing my Q. Would anyone be kind to send me a DNG file which has been taken in 35 or 50mm mode? Thanks a lot! Romain

Hello, I hope this is the right place for such a question. I happen to publish my pictures on ipernity.com, a reasonably-sized company who accepts full-format photos (of any size, up to gigantic panoramas) and basically any other format (DNG files, that even are previewable on site, but also texts etc.), allowing to view all fullsizes online while permitting their download only for those the author agrees on (a trick I didn't fully understand even now ;-) It happens IPernity just declared they are in financial difficulty, and may close in the coming months if they dont't 'find a solution'. As I don't expect they are going to double their ~3000 paying users, and various discussions about potential takeovers do not seem to converge, I have to face the idea that in a worst case things may indeed go wrong. So, what I am looking for is a hosting service that - must support any photo size (no '500pix' or those that seem to accept then resize) - allows various licenses, including 'Creative Commons' ones - does not belong to a planetary-sized company where I am a decimal within statistics in billions - doesn't impose me to exhaustively fill up 50 fields, including categories I didn't choose, before uploading a single picture (like Leica Fotopark ;-) - will not be free, which I accept. I think this sums it all. I have been registering on many sites for a couple of weeks -for nothing; indeed I didn't find yet a single site that'd feature just the first of the above points. So, I must say I'll welcome all your suggestion with the most extreme interest! Thank you, Hervé

Hi there, I'm looking into picking up a M9 or M-E (and possibly an M 240, depending on cash flow). Right now I'm trying to determine if higher ISO shots from the M9 will be usable for me, and I haven't found any sample DNG's on the web anywhere at ISO 800+. I've read that shooting at ISO 640 and pushing in post is probably a better method for achieving quality low light images, so if anyone has an underexposed ISO 640 image that I could push that would be helpful as well. Does anyone have a few they could upload/share, or perhaps even point me to some existing samples with working links? Thanks.

Wondering what the Q gang out there are using as your own b/w RAW conversion workflow on the Q. Not jpeg monochrome settings. Straight RAW DNG files from color to bw. If you could share, would be great - custom profiles included. I know a lot of this is personal taste, still, would be great to hear your "how" an "why"... I do own a Q, and prefer not to spend a lot of time in post. I find the RAW files incredible with really no need to do much in post other than a little boost or minus here and there while staying with color …bw another story. Seems a little crunchy to me at first via LR conversion, through that may be bc I like more fine grain, less "massively treated" bw files. Guess I am more an Acros 100 lover (like the M246 comes close with digital), but that does not matter... I am more curious as to your own. MB -
Hallo in die Runde, mit erschrecken habe ich heute die Bilder einer Winterwanderung ausgewertet. Nicht nur das die Auflösung völlig unzureichend ist ( Aufnahmeauflösung DNG) auch sind chromatische Abweichungen deutlich zu sehen die sich großflächig über Bereiche des Bildes verteilen. Es hatte etwa -3 Grad draußen, der Akku war voll und es gab eine Fehlermeldung auf dem Display die ich nicht weiter beschreiben kann, da ich die Kamera just abschaltete während ich eine Fehlermeldung erkannte... Beispiel füge ich an. Vielen Dank für eure Hilfe schonmal an dieser Stelle!

Hallo, ich habe aber die Suchfunktion zwar schon benutzt, bin aber auf nur wenige für mich relevante Artikel zum Thema Bildbearbeitung von Leica DNGs auf dem iPad gestoßen. Entweder suche ich falsch, oder das iPad scheint nicht sonderlich beliebt für die Bildbearbeitung zu sein. Wie dem auch sei, ich bin auf der Suche nach Tips und Erfahrungen zu dem Thema. Seit Jahren habe ich eine M8 und habe meine DNGs immer per CaptureOne auf dem Mac bearbeitet. Allerdings sind meine Macs und auch mein CaptureOne etwas in die Jahre gekommen und letzteres läuft seit einem OS Upgrade nicht mehr. Ich scheue aber die Investition in die neue Software, weil ich dann wohl die Hardware auch bald erneuern müsste. Aber ich habe ein aktuelles iPad Pro, dass mich, wie auch meine M8, auf allen meinen Reisen begleitet. Bis jetzt habe ich Apple Fotos und Adobe PS Express auf dem iPad ausprobiert. Allerdings bisher nur mit JPGs. Beides macht weder Spaß, noch bietet es mir die Optionen, die ich gerne hätte, wie Tonwertkurven oder selektive Bearbeitung mit Ebenen oder Masken. Hat jemand von Euch dazu relevante Erfahrungen? Gruß Tim

Liebe Mitglieder, ich habe gesucht, aber nicht wirklich was gefunden, daher der neue Beitrag... Ich dachte, dass eine RAW Datei nur die elektronischen Daten des Sensors speichert und alle anderen Informationen wie Farbe, Kontrast und auch Weißabgleich durch den Bildprozessor der Kamera nur in der JPG Datei ausgegeben werden. Nun habe ich in der M10 folgendes "Phänomen": der eingestellte Weißabgleich findet auch in der DNG Datei Verwendung, d.h. sowohl in der Apple Vorschau als auch in CaptureOnePro12 sehe ich den manuellen Weißabgleich und damit die unterschiedliche Farbgebung. Ein "Zurücksetzen" auf wie bei Aufnahme ist dann auch nicht mehr möglich. I use my M9 for documentation of the urban environment. Often, there is a detail (such as a poster or a sign) that I want to be able to read, some of the time it is not in the center of the image but in a corner or at the edge. Hence the need for the best resolution lenses with little falloff in the outer zones, hence the Leica, especially something like the 18mm or 21mm Super Elmar. Can I get away with JPEG rather than DNG? In other words: Do I lose much or any resolution, given the limits of the M9 sensor, if I only have JPEGs. My concern is longer term--say fifty years from now and I get curious about a sign in a window. (My inspiration is the work of Charles Marville in Paris, ~1865, but his work is with 30x40cm plates and on a tripod.)

Hallo zusammen, wenn ich von meiner D-Lux 4 eine RAW Datei in Lightroom "als DNG" importiere, dort bearbeite und dann als DNG exportiere um sie z. B. einem Kollegen weiter zu geben, habe ich im Finder kein Vorschaubild mehr und Vorschau kann die Datei auch nicht mehr öffnen. Gibt es hier für eine Erklärung/ Lösung? Ach so, bei anderen Kameras ist das nicht so. Danke und Gruß Roman

Much criticized Ken Rockwell has constantly written that he loves most everything about the M9 except its DNG color. Even though he prefers to shoot in JPG, he says that he would be quite willing to shoot with the M9's DNG if he could thereby find a PP remedy for the its allegedly poor rendering of colors. On 1/7/11, he wrote that after seeing "some great images from Leica's M9 as processed through Aperture 3," he downloaded it's latest version for trial. But that version, he claims, can read only M9 DNGs shot prior to his installed M9 firmware 1.138: "This compatibility baloney always haunts raw shooters, which is just one of innumerable reasons I prefer JPG. It's just that I'd love to figure out how to get a good picture out of the M9.As we say in real estate when trying to sell an awful house, the M9 'has great potential.' " Anyone's observations, comments, lines of thought?

Hallo, ich habe bzgl. der nachstehenden Frage keine Antwort im Forum gefunden bzgl. in der Bedienungsanleitung keinen Hinweis: Kann man nur DNG speichern - so wie bei anderen Kameras i.d.Regel üblich ? Oder kann man bei Lightroom den Import auf DNG-Dateien beschränken ? Nachträglich die Dateien zu löschen ist nicht so lustig. Ich benötige die JPG-Dateien nicht und möchte Platz sparen. Weiß jemand einen Rat ? Vielen Dank ! Grüße Georg

Hello! I would much appreciate advice to all or any individual part of my set of questions: I intend to bring my in-Lightroom 2.6 developed X1 dngs to a printing lab. How to export them (as jpegs) without unintentionally worsening the best possible printing quality at the stage of saving? I assume that I have to save them as jpegs. (Is this not the best option, or would I benefit from using another format?) X1 provides jpegs as normal, fine and superfine. Why is this no longer a specified option/ relevant division in Lightroom, in where dngs are being exported as jpegs? That is, why cannot I export dngs as superfine jpegs, given that superfine is more detailed than a regular one? I have further trouble understanding what to enter under 'Resize to Fit' (Width & Height). Should the print size determine what values I had best to enter? If print size matters, I aim to take cm 15* 25,5, and 20* 30 prints. It seems to be possible to specify more pixels to an image than what the camera has initially recorded. What is the implication for the printing quality if I tell Lightroom to include more pixels than what the camera's physical limit is. Does Lightroom now invent new pixels in between the original ones, which would presumably make the print quality suffer? Is this possibility to invent new pixels retroactively in Lightroom something that I could use with considerably cropped images, to make them look smooth in prints? Otherwise, is it not best to set no less and no more pixels than what the camera manual informs as the actual number with reference to dng (4288*2862)? If the maximum pixel number ---up to the limit that the camera has originally produced--- is the best option, is it recommended that I export the dngs as jpegs according to the maximum pixel number for JPEG in X1 (4272*2856), or will the jpeg pixels actually reach the number of a dng when burnt not by the camera but by a computer from a dng source information? Third, which resolution value should I enter in order to ensure the best printing quality. I think to know that there is a limit above which an eye cannot discern details, but is there a downside to entering a little greater value than what is needed or possible, rather than entering a bit lesser value that is possible, if the file size is ignored? Hallo Zusammen, ich habe ein DNG in LR3 importiert, einige Anpassungen gemacht, z.B. in SW gewandelt usw., und würde es nun gern wieder in DNG exportieren. Der Export funktioniert, leider werden aber die Änderungen nicht mit exportiert, es wird immer nur das Original Bild exportiert. Wird das Bild als Jpg oder TIFF exportiert, dann werden die Änderungen übernommen. Was mache ich falsch? Danke für Eure Hilfe. Gruss, Marco

Hello. I have just ( one week) at last bought an used M8 and am trying to get the hang of the camera...(having fun..) I am using Aperture 3.1, but have also tried Lightroom 3.2 for the M8 files. Today I saw something that I hope somebody can help me with (or explain..) I was shooting jpg and raw when I saw that Aperture misinterpeted the files. The dng files have an ugly colourcast. I have only seen this on two pictures but when I import the files into Lightroom they appear ok. I have also seen that the Lightoom pictures are some pixels bigger than the Aperture pictures? Is that normal? Hope that somebody can explain what happened to my files... I am having fun with the M8. But find it hard to get tack sharp pictures... (not used to rff yet I suppose...) I got hold of an hopefully mint silver M8, an CV 28/1.9, CV 50/1.5, CV 15/4.5 and an CV 75/2.5 Planing to retire my Nikon D200... The files are jpg exported from Aperture DNG exported to jpg from Aperture DNG exported to jpg from Lightroom -
Bin seit letztem Freitag glücklicher Besitzer einer Monochrom und soweit recht begeistert von der Qualität der Bilder. Mir ist jedoch aufgefallen, dass bei Einstellung von DNGs in den Settings die Kamera keinerlei Objektivdaten in die Metadaten schreibt. Also nicht etwa Summilux X, Noctilux etc., sondern allenfalls eine Angabe der Brennweite erfolgt. Außerdem werden in Lightroom im Importdialog keine Previews angezeigt, sondern lediglich die DNG-Logos. Das passiert sowohl bei Verbindung über USB als auch bei direktem Auslesen von der SD-Karte. Bei den gleichen Kameraeinstellungen lassen sich die beiden Probleme mit der M9-P nicht nachstellen. Habt Ihr auch dieses Problem? -
One of the great disappointments of the M9, and the most frustrating for me, has been the lack of a proper embedded preview in the DNG. I do not shoot DNG+JPG, partially because I think the JPGs coming out of the M9 are useless, and generally do not do a good job of predicting what the DNG will look like. It makes an iPad workflow a pain in the neck! I do not want to go through this again with the new M. Has anyone done any research into whether the new M DNG files have embedded previews? Is this a standard for DNG that Leica can't change, or are iPads not capable of natively processing DNGs? Whose fault is it?

hi, i hope Im in the right place for this question. say i have a Leica M Monochrom DNG raw file, then i convert it to a TIF file using photoshop. will there be any difference between the original DNG and the converted TIF (besides file size) ?? since there is no demosaicing, i cant see any difference. is that true ? thanks in advance, koferk.

I took delivery of a Monochrom today, and shot a number of images, went to import them into Lightroom 4 and the DNG files do not have a preview. I re formated the memory card and tried a few cards, with the same result. Also tried LR4 on another laptop, same thing. There is also no preview when just opening the cards on the the desk top. I'm using a MacBook Pro and all software is up to date. Once the files are imported into LR, the image can be seen. I have an M9 and have no problem, also no problem when I had an M8. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
