  1. Hello everybody, My D2 can't read any sd card (1 or 2 Gb). I've bought it new in 2005 and it works since a month ago. Somebody know if thee are any fix for my D2? Thank you very much for any advice!
  2. Digilux 2 Converted to mono in LR5 and SEP2 - Taken soon after sunrise.
  3. Well my lovable Digilux 2 won't boot....tried a couple of batteries that I'm certain are fresh--nada...I'll pay anyone $350 to get my Digilux 2 working again. Since I cannot ship the Lithium Ion battery(I'm told)...the repairer needs a BP-DC1-U battery.

  14. Hi, I wonder if others had the same problem: I have a 2nd SF 24D that I use regularly with my M3 on A setting, no problem. Now, recently I obtained an M9 and tried out the 24D with it but it instantly switches to a flashing ISO 3200 and an LGN of 45. This cannot be changed by the +/- buttons, nor anything else (such as f-stop). This occurs in A and M setting (TTL/GCN I can forget - it doesn’t work at all with the M9 but reminds me to switch to A). The odd thing is that it resets once off the M9 and then the settings can be used just as normal. I tried it also on a friend’s D-Lux 5 and his ancient Digilux 2 - the former works fine on A, the latter produces the same problems as with the M9. I usually am fine working on A or M since I normally use the 24D as a filler flash but even that doesn’t work with the M9 under these circumstances. Ideas? Thanks very much raxnitz
  15. My first Leica was a D-Lux 4. That little camera got me really excited about photography again in a way that none of my DSLRs had. It's also the camera that led me to this forum (which has become my favorite photography forum on the web.) On the other hand, this forum (and some particular contributors who shall remain nameless ) have infected me with a nasty case of Digilux 2 fever. I bought one (with a non replaced sensor for $450.) Loved it. Could not put it down. It made me feel like a "real photographer" and sent me on many a trek/walk just to shoot some photos with it. It is most enjoyable camera I have ever owned. The combination of manual/analog controls, the classic looks, and the great tone from the pictures is just what I was looking for. Having a viewfinder is great, so is having the option of autofocus - two great things for someone who needs reading glasses. Buying it was a great decision. However, I hated the thought of the sensor going bad and being without it even if for a short time, so I bought another one (with a replaced sensor for $650.) Having a backup Digilux 2 with a replaced sensor was a reasonable purchase considering how much I liked this camera. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I saw a minty Digilux 2 on eBay with box and all the original accessories/manuals/filter etc. and I wanted it too. I bid, but I was outbid (it went for over $1,000 - hopefully to someone on this forum.) I was disappointed, but I got busy and managed to buy another one for $700 with new sensor (replace just a month ago) from the original owner with the box and all accessories (including the filter.) OK, this last purchase was a over the top, but with 3 of them my Digilux fever is now cured. And I can even feel comfortable shipping one of them for leather "pimping" . How did I manage to find 3 Digilux 2s at reasonable prices (average of $600)? Well, that's what I want to share with my newfound friends on this forum who are looking to get their first (or second) Digilux 2. I used craigslist but in "proactive mode." I've discovered that even though there might be no listings for DL2s at any given time, there are lots of people out there that will respond to WTB (Want to Buy) ads. I make it easy for the sellers by offering cash and a local transaction. I also get the benefit of seeing and testing the camera in person before buying it. So, if you want to get your hands on a Digilux 2, don't wait for a "For Sale" ad to appear, or bid on eBay, try writing a Craigslist WTB ad and you might get that camera sooner and at a better price. I hope this helps some of the people who've been wanting to get a Digilux 2 and have been having trouble finding one. Thanks again to all the people who turned me on to the Digilux 2 and best of luck to those of you who are looking to get one. This is really one special camera. Alberto
  16. finally decided to post an image, i have had my digilux 2 since 2004, but the idea of posting an image on this forum seemed daunting. pears on table in barn, natural light from window and door, overcast morning, straight from the camera. thank you, ahead, for your comments. kaethe
  17. PS: Sorry for the long post. This is somehow a mental exercise that I wanted to share with you. When I finished writing I had a better idea on which to keep, but nevertheless, I will share my thoughts with you. You are welcome to confuse me further. This is my dilemma. I know this forum may not be impartial, but nevertheless I want to ask for your valuable opinions. I need to choose one of them (and sell the other one), so any suggestion for a different brand/model camera is not helpful at all. To help my quest I created a comparison test scene lit with a separate flash unit bounced from the ceiling. I chose f/5.6 aperture (which I use most of the time) and compared the images at Lightroom at their original sizes, and at a downsampled size (2400px edge). I also included an LC1 in the test, which I will be selling soon, just to see how it compares with D2. Here is a copy of Leica D2 RAW result (click for 1024x768 copy, sorry for free flickr limitation): And here is the Sony R1 RAW result (click for 1024x768 copy, sorry for free flickr limitation): Here is the link to the test set (100% crops) on flickr: Leica Digilux 2 vs Panasonic LC1 vs Sony R1 - a set on Flickr Here is one sample 100% crops from my comparison set, Sony R1 and Leica D2 both RAW (click for original size): Below are my lists of PROs and CONs that I could come up with for each camera when compared with the other model. Sony R1 PROs: Much cleaner sensor output when compared to D2 between ISO100-400 Longer zoom reach (24-120mm eqv) Shallower depth of field (if needed) Faster startup when compared to D2 Longer battery life compared to D2 Better external flash white balance Top mount LCD provides excellent opportunities for architectural photography from unconventional shooting angles Sony R1 CONs: Heavy, large, and wrist-hurting ergonomics (or lack of) and hit/miss shutter release button Very slow AF in low light No manual/intuitive controls like D2 and the lens extends ridiculously when zoomed The lens provides somewhat inconsistent image quality, double-lined bokeh in some situations, and weird aberrations and shows excessive field curvature (out of focus and smeared edges) The lens is 1 stop slower at wider end, and 2 stops slower at tele end (f2.8-4.8) when compared to D2 Large RAW files (25MB!) and not so nice JPEG output Leica Digilux 2 PROs: Excellent lens optics provide excellent image quality at all ranges, wonderful bokeh guaranteed Wonderfully laid out manual and intuitive controls Ergonomics are excellent, the camera is not so heavy but not light either Nice JPEG output, comparable to RAW Better AF in low light when compared to R1 Built in bounce flash and better LCD when compared to R1 Leica Digilux 2 CONs: Not so clean sensor output, too grainy when compared to R1 and lack of detail Not so shallow depth of field (but 90/2.4 helps a lot) AF is hit and miss sometimes, requires manual focusing at 90mm (which slows down the whole process) Shorter battery life compared to R1 Cannot set custom white balance with an external flash In addition to these lists above, I should say that I experience more frustrations with R1 operation-wise. Many times camera wastes time AF'ing, but not achieving and then still releasing the shutter and making me wait 6 seconds for writing RAW. Using D2 is a more pleasant experience. If only D2 had a tad cleaner output (like R1) then I wouldn't hesitate keeping it. I also own a Leica M6 with 35/50 Summicrons. I find it easier to switch between M6 and D2 from ergonomics point of view. With R1 I totally get lost with wheels and menus. So my final thinking is that if I can't use a tool fluently then there is no point in better image quality (per pixel sensor output) that it provides. Moreover, in lower light (i.e., indoors) I lose 1-2 stops from R1 (increase to ISO200), and then I need to shoot at a higher shutter speed to reduce shake (lose another stop, so increase to ISO400), and I need to stop down more to get deeper depth of field (another few stops). With D2, I can shoot at 90mm eqv with f/2.4 and can still have more depth of field than R1 and enough light to shoot at ISO100. So theoretically in some cases R1 can't deliver where D2 can. I hardly print anything larger than 6x4, so probably I won't see the pixel difference between these two cameras at that size, right? Do you have any suggestions on these points? Cheers, Koray
  18. Hi guys, After reading this forum thoroughly and visiting Thorsten's blog, I've decide to get a D2 off eBay. This marvel camera arrived on friday, so I had the chance to play with it the entire weekend. So far, I am VERY pleased with the results! I just cannot get over the fact that I wasted the past 5 years without this gem. I took it for a walk in Brooklyn, NY in a overcast day. I am really happy with the results! Here are some of the pictures. I hope you like them! Of course, critics and constructive feedback are very welcomed! Thanks, Carlos
