Hello! I'm trying to lock in a scanning workflow for B/W 35mm and I've had such a love/hate relationship with my Coolscan 5000 and Vuescan. The detail extracted is second to none, but I'm seeing EVERY flaw as well. There are hairline surface scratches that explode on the screen from these scans that are nowhere to be found on a mirrorless camera scan or a darkroom print. Is this just inherent to the scanning physics? Is it scanning the surface and therefore every film base scratch is seen? Again, if you backlight the negative, all of these tiny scratches are invisible. Hence why they don't show up in camera scans or darkroom prints. Any ideas?

Hallo, hier eine Frage an die Leute die genau hinschauen: bei meinem Nikon LS-5000 werden generell alle Kanten in Vortriebsrichtung (Längsrichtung) nochmal zusätzlich grob gepixelt, und zwar bei 4000-dpi-Scans (andere Auflösung habe ich jetzt daraufhin nicht getestet - dürfte aber ähnlich sein). Das fällt aber eigentlich nur bei schrägen Kanten so richtig auf: jeweils 4 Pixel bzw. 2 Pixelpaare in der Breite ziehen sich zu einer Einheit zusammen, so dass insgesamt ein stärker abgestufter treppenartiger Eindruck entsteht, als bei harmonischem Kantenscan nötig wäre und der Sinn der hohen Auflösung etwas ad absurdum geführt wird. (Natürlich haben die benachbarten Pixel nicht den gleich Farbwert, könnten aber schon rechentechisch interpolierte Werte darstellen). Bei noch etwas genauerer Betrachtung fällt auf, dass im Prinzip die durchgehenden Scanzeilen über weite Bildausschnitte (- ich habe mir nicht die Mühe gemacht, das über die ganze Bildhöhe zu verfolgen - ) noch im Zusammenhang als Paare bzw. 4-er Einheiten mit in Längsrichtung nach links/rechts abgesetzter Helligkeit erkennbar sind. Entlang der Vertikale verändert sich das natürlich - sonst wäre ja das ganze Bilid gestreift. Programme im Test: Viewscan (mein präferiertes Programm), Nikon-Scan 4, jeweils ohne Nachschärfung, wie sich das für Rohscans gehört. Farbeinstellungen haben keinen Einfluss, der FineMode (Einzelzeilenscan) unter Viewscan auch nicht. Scheint also eher nicht am Scanprogramm zu liegen. Bei einem anderen Scanner (Microtec ArtixScan 4000 tf) mit gleicher Auflösung von 4000 dpi tritt das Problem nicht auf - der ist natürlich sonst von der ganzen Farbabstimmung/Farbtiefe dem LS5000 weit unterlegen. Leider habe ich es nicht geschafft, meine Beispielsausschnitte vergrößerbar hier einzustellen (nach dem Hochladen war alles verschwommen). Frage: ist das nun ein mechanisches Problem an meinem Gerät oder sehen bei anderen Leuten die Scans auch so aus ?[/b]

I'm using fomapan 100 with diafine. I exposed the film for iso 200 up till now, but I guess it's better to overexpose , so I will try iso 100. I am then scanning the film with a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED. I scan to nef raw files. I noticed that one can set a lot of things with the Nikon Scan software. Now, what is your experience in this: should I scan for a flat contrast, with lot's of detail (and use photoshop to create the look I want) , or would it be better to scan immediately for the desired effect? Probably I am trying to find a setting that will do justice to most of the negatives, so I can batch scan the films.
