Taken in my home town. I found the Agfa quite grainy in Adox FX39 so will change to Microphen as a trial. The grain is no major problem as I can reduce it in Lightroom but it would be if I wanted to go larger than maybe 25x20cm. Leica M6 + 35mm Summarit-M f2.5 - Agfa APX400 Gerry

I am still editing images taken on my visits to Paris. This is the latest to be chosen. Taken on Tri-X in 1999 using an M6 with a 50mm Summicron f2 lens. You can see my 'Streets of Paris' portfolio at https://gwpics.myportfolio.com/the-streets-of-paris I am hoping to get a book together in the relatively near future, so comments are welcome. Gerry

Joerg-Peter Rau shares his thoughts on the loss of his darkroom that was located in the basement of his mother's home. Reading this essay is but one of several recent serendipities that are compelling me to revisit black and white film photography and to get my film developing gear out of the cabinet where it has laid dormant for too long... Another from the last film I processed. Taken just standing and shooting on the street, so a 'grab' shot. This is a crop from the full frame. I must confess that I quite like the look of the film even though it is clearly not the 'original' Agfa product and is a bit grainy so has to be worked on Maybe a change in developer would calm it down. Hello all, I shoot DNG nearly exclusively. I noticed that when I bring the files shot with the internal M11 Monochrome profile, that once imported into Lightroom, they are no longer black and white. The M11 profiles do not seem to be available in Lightroom. Has anyone solved this? Thanks, Dave

Normally I shoot candidly, but because I wanted to get in tight and had the 35mm lens on, this time I asked for permission - no problem. image was cropped to about 50%. Leica M6 + 35mm Summarit-M f2.5. Ilford HP5+. 1/125 @ f11. Adox FX-39 II dev. Gerry

Another from my latest film back from the lab. This was taken on the M7 prior to getting rid of it (big mistake!) using the 35mm Summarit-M f2.5. Film is Kodak T-Max400 processed by Harman Labs who do a pretty good job. No idea of exposure (sorry) but was available light only. I particularly love the face of the little child in the background. Back in 2000 I was invited to give a guest lecture at Nasau Community College on Long Island, New York. I took a number of photographs of the students while waiting to start, and have been revisiting them now. Leica M6 + 50mm Summicron f2. Available light and handheld but have no record of the camera settings. Kodak T400CN film which I had processed locally to avoid problems with x-ray machines at the airport on the way back (those were the days!) One basic error in the photo, that is my Billingham bag in the background (oops!) Gerry

I was in two minds over this - I nearly dumped it but I liked its 'filmic' qualities so much I decided to keep it, and I now think it is one of the best images I have taken for a long time. To me it has the wonderful atmosphere of uprated Tri-X. Agree or don't agree, I don't really care, I just LOVE it - and wasn't it HC-B who said “Sharpness is a bourgeois concept". Leica M240 + 35mm Summarit-M f2.5 @ 1250 iso using available light only. 1/15th @ f5.6. Gerry

John Brockliss brings us a well reasoned essay on monochrome photography with the M cameras that are made specifically for this pursuit: The Leica M Monochrom family. The Q2 Monochrom is not mentioned, but it should be looked at closely by those who want to commit to black and white photography by digital means. The Q2 is a powerful tool, whether you choose the color or Monochrom variant. I got my M10 Monochrom in July of 2020 out of a desire to do more in black and white photography, and because I saw the M10 Mono as a breed apart, a special camera. Spring is the time for color shooting, with flowering trees in full bloom so I have been shooting color of late. Even with my desire to do more exploration of the digital black and white realm, I have been reluctant to commit to the Monochrom and black and white imaging exclusively. As I read, re-read and reflect on this essay, I'm thinking my reluctance to making that commitment may eventually weaken.

I have shot very little this past year for various health and Covid reasons. Here is one that I was pleased with from my favourite café. It is a grab shot as I just had the camera resting on the table and didn't look through the viewfinder. Leica M7 + 35mm Summarit-M f2.5. Kodak T-Max 400 at 400. No exposure values recorded. Commercially processed and scanned at home. Gerry

Back in 1997 and again in 2000 I took part in workshops/retreats organised by the New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists on a small group of islands called the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire. I was the only "outsider" there, being from England. The trip was extended both times to make the travel worthwhile. I shot mostly black and white using Kodak T400CN so I could get it processed locally and not worry about x-ray damage at the airport. In 1997 I used an M3 and in 2000 it was an M6. I have recently been invited my the Portsmouth Athenaeum to add my images to their archives of the area for posterity, and have gladly accepted as i consider it an honour. There is a lot of work involved scanning negatives and spotting etc. but there are also a lot of memories. You can see some of the work on the portfolio page of my website, please take a look, or there is a taster attached from 1997. Who knows, one day it may be an exhibition! Gerry
