  1. Thank you for your consideration. I just purchased the Leica Lux D 7 and interested to learn more about the features. M. A.
  2. I'm fascinated by Leica heritage and Leica lenses. I figured I would like to give film a try before going digital. Not knowing much about film cameras, I'd like to have some advice about which film Leica camera to buy, where to buy film and the best developer/scanner (possibly by mail, in the UK). Thank you,
  3. Hi. I am a novice with some sketchy experience gained back in the 1980's at college. I have been using a Pentax K-x (D-SLR) for the last few years, at infrequent intervals. More recently I decided to get into photography a bit more and a "good" compact was priority for ease of carrying around. Also to encourage me to learn about "real" photography and the necessary skills... so after much research I opted for an early Xmas prezzy to myself; a lovely D-Lux 109. The Leica will be used for pleasure and I intend to keep it handy as much as possible.... it's due for delivery next week!!! In the mean time I'll be trawling though this forum for more tips & advice. Ta, Mark
  4. I'm trying to get thoroughly acquainted with my camera; I've had good results using it in the point-and-shoot style, but I want to progress. I've been reading a pretty good general book about digital photography, and I've just read a fairly lengthy section on White Balance. I've been using WB set to Automatic (I assume - I sure as heck didn't set it myself!), and the results have been fine. The WB seems a bit of a fiddly adjustment to make, but the author of the book seemed to think that the WB was a meaningful part of the photos. How do you guys approach the white balance issue with your D-Lux 4's? Are you satisfied with the AutoWB? Any particular tips or suggestions? Also, I'm shooting RAW; does that mean that the WB setting is not really all THAT important, because I can manipulate the image in Photoshop? Thanks for any suggestions, Jaze
  5. I am a beginner when it comes to digital but have some limited experience with 35mm SLR cameras. My question is - which camera is better for a virtual beginner in this field? The D-Lux 4 sounds great but a lot of what I have read indicates that to get great pictures you need to know a lot about the treatment of the photos using photoshop, aperture or similar (neither of which I have). Does anyone use the pics without treating them a lot? I work in the film industry where everything is beginning to go digital so am keen to get a really good digital stills camera which can grow with me over the next year or 2 but still go on holiday and take snapshots.
  6. I've been thinking about it for some time, but I have finally decided to give it a go. I'm talking about popping off a roll of Tri-X and souping it at home. I have never developed a film in my life, so I would like some guidance, please, as to: 1. What equipment do I need? I think I need: - a daylight changing bag (yes I know I can black out a room but I'm assuming that this is easier) - a film can opener - a light-tight tank - a reel to go in the tank - a clip to hang the roll up with - a set of tongs to dry it off 2. What chemicals do I need? - insert as applicable 3. What do I do? I appreciate that this may all seem noddy, but please be gentle with me. I have done some internet searches and can find most of the equipment either as part of a kit or separately, but I cannot find a "starter" kit for chemicals. All the ones I have found so far seem to be big containers and I know that some of them (all?) can oxidise so I would prefer small ones to start with. To be clear, the end result I am aiming for at this stage is developed negs that I can scan myself - I am not going to wet print... yet... Thoughts? Suggestions? Resources etc that you can point me at? Regards, Bill
  7. Hi everyone, I'm diving into photography as a more serious hobby and am drawn to Leica. I have not owned a rangefinder before, but I've done a lot of research on the pros/cons and find myself being constantly pulled back to the M9. I've always been a fan of manual transmission vehicles vs. automatics, and I suppose that the increased involvement required when making photos with a MF rangefinder is a big selling point for me. Having said that, I am starting to search around for a used M9 or M9-P and was wondering if I should hold off for a few months? If the M10 is announced in the fall, I'm assuming that it put some significant pressure on used M9 pricing and allow me to get into the game a bit more reasonably. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts/advice. Thanks in advance, and looking forward to becoming a part of the community!
