  1. I am in a bit of a squeeze at the moment as I urgently need to purchase new monitors as I have delayed procurement for almost a year now. I run a Mac only environment with several Macbook Pro computers around the company. My current main working machine is a 15" Macbook Pro Retina as of it's mobility and all-around usability between locations and different tasks. My machine for heavy processing and prototype work is a late 2013 Mac Pro 6core. I run the Mac Pro with a three screen workspace currently for CAD design and prototyping but would like to extend this environment by one additional monitor for critical photography post processing. The monitor should be no smaller than 27" and no larger than 30". No 4K monitors please - I figure the tech is not arrived at best performance and price yet and will go for 4K at the next round. Connectivity should allow for the monitor to extend thunderbolt (or at a minimum several USB 3.0 for external drives, accessories, etc) and it should allow to attach at least two machines at the same time without unplugging cables (Mac Pro attached at all times, Mac Book Pro attached and switched to when needed). The switch between both machines on the monitor should be quick and painless (ideally a one click button affair). For connecting the display to the machines I need both display port and HDMI (I prefer a 27" monitor like the NEC over a 4K display as it can be pushed by the Mac Pro without issues while the other three monitors are still running). I absolutely DESPISE touch control buttons or anything consumer grade alike. I need proper hard-click buttons (ideally on the front rim to be accessible even when stacking displays. It should be a current (not outdated or replaced) display as I leave the option open to add an identical second display in 2015. Integrated calibration workflow would be great. I use Spyder hardware and basICColor software at the moment but am flexible if monitor native hard/soft is equal or better. My very first choice of monitors after a few weeks of search through the internet is this NEC 27" display: NEC PA272W Monitor: What it Looks Like, What's in the Box It looks the overall greatest package, exactly fulfilling my needs. The only one issue I have with this NEC display is that the authorized dealers around Shanghai/ China only offer a throat-cutting highway robbery deal, selling the display for about DOUBLE :wtf: the asking price as it retails in the US. I look for alternative displays at same level quality or better (or a better source for the NEC in China ?). Budget is 1500 - 2500 EUR (1,875 - 3,126 USD). If there is a display that retails at 3000 EUR though and is exceptionally better value as of manufacturers warranty, reputation for long life, speed of I/O ports, number of I/O ports, display specs, etc … I would not be turned off also. I have worked in the past with pro grade EIZO and Sony CRTs which where the business back then - truly bomb proof - are these manufacturers still as they used to be?
  2. Dear Q2 users, I am interested to find out if geotagging works reliably and the time it takes to download the raw through the app. These 2 features are critical to get into digital, other than cellphone photos, for me. Would you mind sharing your experience? Thanks,

  5. mild temperatures brought forward all blosoms and all greenery forward and everything is 4 weeks earl this year. So to explore the countryside and forests is pleasant. Difficult light for exposures is most tricky because of the bright sky and much stray light. Therefore I used a combination of filters. In this case graded ND filter + polarisation filter on Canon 5D MKII with Elmarit R 28 mm
  6. Has anyone used the new Apple Lighning usb camera adapter with a M9? It looks as if there should be no problems, but I see some early reports of difficulties with some cameras, giving the error message USB DEVICE REQUIRES TOO MUCH POWER. Thanks for any advice before I splash out on a ipad 4.
  7. I needed to demonstrate the technical excellence of Apple's retina display on the new MacBook Pro for an article on my technology blog. So I turned to the Leica Monochrom and my trusty 35mm Summicron ASPH. 1/350s at f/3.4, handheld. You could argue that the retina screen is all about colour, so a colour shot could have been preferable. I decided to go with B&W for a different perspective.
  8. I wonder if anyone else here is waiting for Aperture to support Monochrom's linear RAW files. I have used Aperture since version 1 and I am well used to it. I have tried Lightroom numerous times (including version 3 and now version 4) but still prefer the non-modular system in Aperture, it's full-screen mode, etc... Usually RAW support lags a couple months behind the camera release. Well, it's been 6 months since the MM was released and no support yet. Quite disappointing I must admit. I understand that this support requires the collaboration between Leica and Apple. Two companies known for not disclosing much of their roadmap/plans. I know people involved in this kind of development (new software versions, features, etc) are usually under NDA, but it would be great if at least some hint that this is in the works showed up somewhere... Already emailed Apple... what would be the best channel to reach Leica? Nonetheless, enjoying the camera...
  9. As many others I received the to me disturbing mail to agree that all my personal info would be transferred to Google by NIK Software. I love the software of that company and now they sold it all to Google. What will google do with it? Is it another copycat action of Apple? I don't know but I wrote them a mail that I will not agree which means I will stop using NIK software completely. I've bought the Perfect Photo Suite 7 to try and am looking further into this. I now have Photomatix for HDR etc etc. What do you think?
  10. Morning all For a number of years now I've been making photo books for friends and family (my Mum absolutely loves them). Usually I've used the book-printing service in iPhoto on the Mac. However, now that I've got an M9, I'm wondering if it's time (or possible) to up the ante in terms of print, paper and binding quality. Anyone know of any services that are better than Apple's? I was in the Mayfair shop last week and had a look at the last Leica Forum charity book - I was impressed with the quality. I understand this was produced by Blurb - has anyone used them? Any good or bad reviews in terms of product and service? Thanks in advance K
  11. On your Mac, go to Software Update and download the latest patches. The App store is included in the 10.6.6 patch (am assuming in a 10.5.x patch too). Computer will restart. New icon on Dashboard and in the Apple menu for the App Store. Hoping interesting features start to appear for say Aperture.
  12. Got a couple of guestions for the pair mentioned in the topic. 1) what if any default presets do you use for M8 in Aperture 3's Raw Fine Tuning module? 2) Do you have any other action presets for M8 in Aperture 3 ie. apply certain color tuning or similar to each photo as a starting point? 3) If you were to make a new Raw preset for M8 in AP 3, how would you apply that to all or several of your old photos? ie. batch apply it. I know setting it as default camera profile only does this for new photos. 4) Do you have different action presets for shots with or without uv/ir filter? I've been messing about with digital cameras and different pieces of software for a good several years. But as with probably many other hobby photogs, I've never really got a proper grasp on the whole digital workflow or post processing. I've been doing things one photo at a time and each to their own.. this leads to terrible inconsistencies. To start managing the problem I've at least now calibrated my imacs screen. So I guess next step is to find suitable starting points for any consistent editing in AP3. And yes, I prefer AP3 - it's controls and layout just suite me better than anything else so please keep this AP3 related. And after I'm getting consistent results on screen, I'll then start to worry about printing. But that will be a whole new thread //Juha
