Thank you to everyone who took part in last month's 106th Barnack's Monthly theme, which was filled with a wonderful array of more than 400 pictures and excellent ideas and interpretations of the theme! Thank you to everyone who helped to make it another successful month by generously posting their pictures and in particular to those people who posted for the first time - I hope you found it an interesting and rewarding experience and I hope it encourages you to share more of your pictures with us! The Barnack's Monthly theme for September 2017 is: Street "Art" This month's theme is Street "Art", which is basically anything that's intended to decorate or liven up the street environment. Street "Art" could be graffiti, murals, statues, pavement chalk pictures, specially-lit buildings, street theatre, artful architecture, triumphal arches, billboards, shop window displays, fountains, buskers, flower clocks, patterns in building cladding, advertising hoardings, pictures projected onto buildings, patterns in paving slabs in pedestrianised zones, 'bigged-up' building entrances, Christmas lights, bunting, street market tents or stalls, a city marathon finishing line, street signs that have been tampered with, spray-painted stencils on walls, campaign banners, autumnal produce displays - it's entirely your choice so let your imagination run free! It would be a help if you give your picture a title so to help us understand your point of view but it's not compulsory. Members have asked if we'd very kindly name the camera and lens used - if you can remember - because it's interesting to know but, again, it's not compulsory just helpful. The rules are deliberately loose so go out and shoot with this month's theme in mind or start searching back through those pictures you took oh-so long ago that you'd forgotten about and start posting! It doesn't have to be your best ever shot and it's not a competition so you might surprise the rest of us and yourself - it's just about sharing some pictures, seeing others' take on the topic, and enjoying it! Everybody's welcome to contribute, any interpretation, any number of posts, pictures that have been posted on the forum before, any equipment as long as it and the photo complies with the forum's rules of either camera or lens or both made by Leica. Please post freely - especially newcomers and please remember there's no judging or criticism (good or bad) in this thread. So, if you'd like to show your acknowledgement or appreciation that someone has posted their picture then instead of posting a comment please use the "Thanks" button that you can find at the bottom right of every post. Please post away and I look forward to seeing your interesting interpretations of this month's theme. Wandering around Istanbul this past October, I snapped this pic off the cuff. Post-processed in Lightroom. Sorry about the strange crop, some guy walked into the frame as I was snapping the pic. In trying to crop him out, I also wanted to maintain the dimensions, but taking him out entirely would mean losing the woman's shoes or cutting off the head of the mural. M9 40mm 'cron

I had the great pleasure of spending the day at a Leica Akademie event in the town of Bath (England) last weekend which you can read about here and I particularly like this image taken with my M9 and a 35mm Summarit f2.5 which I then processed in LRCC. Gerry

Jeder von uns, der der Photographie als Hobby frönt, hat eine Vorstellung davon, was ein schönes Bild ist bzw. was der photographische Mainstream uns an ästhetischen Kategorien dafür anbietet. Beispiele sind zu Tausenden in den einschlägigen Bilder-Foren zu sehen. Einen ganz anderen Weg ist der berühmte New Yorker Leica-Photograph Garry Winogrand in den 1960er- und 70er Jahren gegangen. Danach gefragt, was seinen persönlichen Stil ausmache, sagte er in einem Interview: „Das Problem in der Photographie besteht nicht darin, ein schönes Bild zu machen, sondern darin einen Weg zu finden, die tatsächliche Welt in etwas ganz anderes zu verwandeln: in ein eindeutiges Bild. - Wenn ich photographiere, achte ich darauf, was ich mit einbeziehen will. Wenn ich photographiere, sehe ich Leben - das ist alles. Wir wissen zu viel über das Aussehen von Photographien, von Bildern. Und es ist leicht, Bilder zu machen, die man kennt. Aber das ist langweilig, man lernt so nichts. Ich weiß, daß das, was ich fotografiere, interessant ist, aber ich kenne ja die Bilder noch nicht. - Ich hoffe das Bild wird interessanter sein als das, was ich fotografiere.“ Bei YouTube ist ein Video gepostet, in dem Winogrand zu sehen ist, wie er auf den Straßen unterwegs ist und seine Konzeption erklärt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJgJtmnt_HI Im Thread „Bilder aus der M10“ habe ich ein Photo veröffentlicht (#2119/2123), das ich im Zusammenhang mit seiner Entstehungsgeschichte zu dieser Kategorie des „eindeutigen“ Bildes rechne. Wer hat Lust, in seinem eigenen Archiv nach Photos zu suchen und hier zu zeigen, die unter diesem Aspekt des „Eindeutigen Bildes“ betrachtet werden können? Ich beginne mit meinem erwähnten Photo von einer arabischen Familie vor dem Skistadion in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Titel: cultural contrast.
