I'm finding myself being asked to shoot a number of upcoming events in the coming months where a quiet shutter is requisite. Given the nature of the work, I'm contemplating if it might not be worthwhile to get a second L body. As the S1 is down to $2K at the moment, I've begin considering if that it might be worthwhile compliment to the SL2. I've been pleasantly surprised by how quiet the is SL2, so I am now wondering if the Pano's sound is similarly muted or if its a clacker. Somewhat of a deal breaker if it's the latter. Anyone with both?

Wie schon bei der M9 und der M240 hat Leica nun auch eine P-Variante der M10 vorgestellt. Einige Forumsmitglieder (ich war einer davon) hatte vorab die Möglichkeit, die Kamera zu nutzen; Leica ging es dabei um einen Test der Firmware. Während die früheren P-Varianten hauptsächlich kosmetische Änderungen aufwiesen und sich die Hardwareänderungen in Grenzen hielten (Saphirglas für das Display oder ein größerer Pufferspreicher), gibt es nun bei der M10-P neben dem üblichen P-Design größere Verbesserungen: Touch-Display Horizontfunktion Silent shutter Über die Horizonfunktion muss man nicht viel sagen. Ich brauche sie nicht. Wenn es mal auf genaue Ausrichtung ankommt, nehme ich dafür Sucherlinien. Das finde ich einfacher und sie sind auch genauer. Touch-Display brauche ich ebenfalls nicht, es stört aber auch nicht. Die Kamera lässt sich bedienen wie die M10, Touch kann man bei einigen Dingen zusätzlich zu den Tasten benutzen. Das betrifft vor allem das Blättern und Zoomen in den Bildern, die Verschiebung des Fokus-Feldes und das Verändern von Einstellungen über das Übersichts-Display. All das funktioniert reibungslos, versehentliche Verstellungen (etwa mit der Nase) gibt es nicht. Das Blättern im Wiedergabemodus läuft allerdings nicht ganz flüssig. Während Horizontfunktion und Touch-Display nicht alle gleichermaßen begeistern werden und eher unter nice-to have fallen, ist der leisere Verschluss ein großer Fortschritt und passt perfekt zum diskreten Fotografieren, das eine M ermöglicht. Für Viele wird der Verschluss ein Kaufgrund bzw. Wechselanlass sein. Dabei ist der Verschluss der M10 schon ähnlich leise wie der der analogen Leicas (wenn auch etwas aggressiver/metallischer); das Verschlussgeräusch der M10-P ist demgegenüber noch einmal deutlich reduziert. Es ist etwa so, als wenn einer Pistole ein Schalldämpfer aufgesetzt worden wäre. Unsere Forumsfreunde Mathias („schattenundlicht“) und Uli („UliWer“), die ebenfalls ein Betatester waren, haben das mal analysiert. Ich selbst habe einen kleinen Film mit beiden Verschlussgeräuschen im Vergleich gedreht (in bescheidener iphone-Qualität), den Ihr hier findet: Ich war mit der M10-P in Mailand und habe dort ein wenig fotografiert. Mein Fazit danach: Wenn ich heute eine M10 kaufen würde, würde es trotz des Mehrpreises eine M10-P. Wechseln werde ich aber nicht, dazu ist die M10 schon zu gut (leise). This news assignment popped up out of nowhere Thursday. All shot with the M8 - 135 Tele-Elmar, 28 f/2.8, 21 f/2.8, ISO 1250 or 640. Manual exposure for the stage shots of Pickens to prevent the black background from dragging down the shutter speed. Pays to know your own web site!] Some observations: This was the first time I felt a bit nervous about the noise of my M8's original shutter. Modern SLRs, with no film to pull, and that big body to act as a "blimp", have gotten remarkably quiet. I noticed Redford's eyes flicking towards me a couple of times as I shot. Of course, he's been around, and probably knows how a Leica M is "supposed" to sound...it may have been surprise rather than the absolute decibels. I hope the quiet shutter is standard in the M9. The 135's resolution saved my butt, as usual. Easy to crop to 300-400mm field of view (even at ISO 1250, slightly pushed). Who'd have thought, in 1964, that this lens would be shooting digital news - and excelling - in 2009? The tight shot of Redford and New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall is IR-contaminated - I'm short a 39mm IR filter and forgot to swap one over from my 50 for the first few frames of the "press availability". The tightest Pickens headshot is 135, ISO 1250 (but really exposed at close to 2500 and pushed a bit in ACR, to avoid camera shake). Cropped to about 400mm framing. I did need to bracket my focusing a bit with the 135 to be sure I got a sharp frame - just tweaking the ring left and right a breath between shots once I'd put the RF images together. I've changed my mind about RAW for breaking-news photojournalism - with a combined sorting and processing program like Bridge/ACR or Lightroom or whatever, it is trivially easy to get a RAW image uploaded as jpg in less than 3-4 minutes. No need to shoot jpgs unless you are wifi-ing a picture direct from a cellphone. (Or, I'll grant, from the sidelines at an NFL game.)
