Walk this morning... and it was washing day for many. Most of us us the sun to dry our washing. So you need to catch it when it hits your cloths. Monochrom, summarit 75 Thanks for looking.

Some evenings the sunset is so beautiful, sublime, that despite the sense that this is going to be just another sunset photograph... I'm compelled to make the image. The colors and the cloud forms were exceptional. The image was made about 7P just as the sun was disappearing off to the right of the image. I used my CV 12mm... made several versions with the house and without... and in a round about way the distortion added to my feeling of otherworldly dislocation. Many thanks for looking and for any thoughts you may wish to share.

We had a long dry season but now the wet season has begun. One of the curiosities of this time of the year is that while it will rain (pour) intensely for an hour or so it will clear off and the air will be freshened and cool. The rain comes in the the early afternoon usually about 2P. Along our strand of beach bathers will stay in the water until the last moment... especially if there is no lightning. The water temperature is in the mid 80'sF so it will be warmer than the rain. In the image below the rain is on its way, about 5 miles away. Thanks for looking and especially for your remarks.

Just down the beach a small quebrada lets fresh water mix with the sea. Most of the time it is very still... but lush and dark. M9 Summerit 90 16sec exposure Thanks for looking and for your thoughts.

In Puerto Rico, as with many places some of the best and simplest food is sold on the roadside from trucks, carts our just under a tent. Everyone has their preference... this cart sells smoked chicken, ribs, and a cut of pork known as Kan-Kan... wonderful with a ring of carbonized fat around the side. Also sold are refreshments and batata... like a sweet potato. The food is taken away or eaten (best with friends) in the shade on the roadside. This is a shot of one of my favorites. I think one of the most difficult shots to get is the time after a sunset... the light is falling quickly, the colors are changing... and you need to have the image be dark but not a full on night image. We had a great sunset last night and I put the camera on a tripod... this image is a 16 sec exposure with the 28 2.8 elmerit M9. Many thanks for looking and for any comments.

Christmas (navidad) in Puerto Rico is a time for music. Local groups spend the year preparing floats drawn by trucks and at the time of the parranda time move from neighborhood to neighborhood with this moveable music and dancing celebration. At each host house, libations are provided and so into the night the music and dancing becomes more... intense. This particular parranda kicked off at mid day, with a traditional soup and benediction. I made these three portraits of participants before the celebration really got going. The BW's were in-camera JPEGs lightly processed in lightroom. M9 summilux 50 pre asph. They were shot wide open using an ND filter. Thanks for looking and for your thoughts. While on a walk about I came upon a tree in San Juan which had about 10 of these fellows on it. This caterpillar is the larval stage of a pretty large but undistinguished moth. The caterpillar however is amazing... this one was about 6 inches long... they look very fierce but apparently only filled with toxin to taste poorly to birds. They had stripped the tree bare. This image of the monument commemorating the 500 years since the arrival of Columbus to the Isla is marked by an enormous totem. As the site was being excavated a large cash of pottery shards was uncovered indicating that the area was one of important pre-colombian habitation. The shards were incorporated into the totem rising over the site. It is a mark of some distinction that while Puerto Rico is a Spanish country in culture... that culture is built on a creole mix of European, Indian and African influences. This image was shot as a four image vertical pano... with a 50 mm lens. Many thanks for looking and especially your comments.

Today, in Puerto Rico and the western Caribbean, we are looking at what is likely to grow into a tropical storm in a couple of days... hence the title. Yesterday, late afternoon I was shooting a wedding, had a couple of minutes, and made a long exposure (12 sec) resting the M9 on a ledge. I like the contrast between the smooth water and rough, texture of the clouds. It was a very stormy day but at the last moment it cleared off... all was well. For those who know the area... this is Aguada Bay looking north towards the Ramey Base... now a commercial airport formerly a SAC base. Many thanks for looking and for your comments.

In our well shaded central courtyard we have growing a very healthy batch of Tradescantia pallida also known as wandering jew. I saw them today with new eyes and just needed to make the photograph. 50mm lux... wide open. It was the lush colors and form which drew me in. Thanks for looking and for your comments.

Bamboo is a pretty common sight here so I tend to drive by with out really seeing it. Today, this morning, I was coming back from shooting another project and passed under a large collection of mango trees intermixed with stands of bamboo. For some reasion, perhaps the way the morning light was hitting the stand I really saw the colors and variety of patterns in the bamboo. All I had was my 28mm but I made this photograph. Last week I was on the beach past sunset... just past sunset. There had been storms during the day and a thick layer of clouds on the horizon. The sun had set yet left a strong afterglow above the cloud bank. I was struck by the pattern of light and the way it seemed to play off the sea. Small waves rippled like small moving islands through a very calm windless early evening sea. Many thanks for looking and your comments and critique are very welcome. Todd

Today we have had really odd weather and light. Very overcast... flat light. The sky and water seemed to merge with no real horizon. The water was dead calm as well. I wanted to capture the stillness of the water and the indistinct horizon... with the water and sky planes almost fused. It was too bright even with my x6nd filter to slow the shutter down... so I added an IR filter and could obtain nice slow shutter speeds. This image was shot fully stopped down, tripod mounted at 16 sec. Many thanks for looking... comments are most welcome.

This morning a small iguana was crawling around in our bushes. In the past I have seen really large ones... up to 3-4 feet not including the tail. Actually our Kitty chased a large one away a couple of weeks ago. This morning however the iguana was small, perhaps three feet including the tail. The kitty did not seem to see it but the Iguana kept a good eye out for the kitty. I played with several shots using the 135 Tele-Elmar. I have trouble with the focus but nailed a couple. A couple of evenings ago there was a sunset that was compelling for me. I shot this with the intention of printing it really large... and so I shot and stitched 6 frames. This was impromptu and so I did not have access to my tripod. I shot with my 50mm preasph wide open and kicked up the ISO so I could hand hold. The view is south west and the sun is just set a few minutes before this image was made. Many thanks for looking but especially, in advance, for your comments.

There are some places in the old city of San Juan where it seems as if time has stopped. Its a very old city by Western Hemisphere standards but most of the streets are stocked with 19 century architecture. One such spot is the end of Calle de Sol where it makes a 90 degree turn down to the bay side fortifications. So I thought I'd go with that sense and give the image a faded look. This is the San Juan gate... the old city is walled and the gate was, in the days of the Spanish, the principle ceremonial entry way by water into the city. M8, 12mm CV Thanks for looking.

Several weeks ago my wife and I went out to do some light painting. As part of a larger project to photograph in the night... especially the deep night with no artificial light available. We went to a site well known and captured these images... just for fun. M8 35mm CV ISO 160 f5.6 and very long exposures... 3 minutes. Thanks for looking.
