This is from my archives for the year 2000. I was on a trip to the US to lecture to a couple of photographic colleges and stopped off at a re-enactment village in Bethpage, Long Island where I photographed just 2 frames of this guy by natural light. The great fun of American re-enactment sites is that they are very serious, and he claimed that he had heard about photography but didn't realise cameras had become so small. I photographed by natural window light using a Leica M6 and 50mm Summicron f2 (I think!). The film was Kodak T400CN (C41 process) which I had taken so I could get it processed as I went and minimise the chances of fogging in airport x-ray machines. I have just rediscovered this after 17+ years, so I hope you like it. Gerry

I took this portrait of English jazz pianist Julian Joseph in 2016 using my M9 and Zeiss 50mm f1.5 lens @ 1250iso. Shutter was 1/125 and aperture f5.7. It was shot as .dng for use by the theatre, and I have only just converted it to mono using LRCC. Lighting was stage lighting (i.e. no flash). Hope you like it! Gerry

Back in 1998 I went on a package tour to Beijing with my wife, but the images have lain pretty dormant in my filing cabinet since. I am now going through some of my older work and scanning it, and I was particularly pleased with this one which was shot on Fuji Provia using an M6 and Summicron-M f2. The exact details have been lost in the annal of time, but I think it was taken in the Forbidden City and shows a man who has brought his caged crickets out to enjoy the winter sunshine. I remember reading that Marc Ribaud )Magnum) had gone to China to photograph the Tiananmen Square 'happenings' in 1989 but had been so fascinated by people in the cafes with crickets he missed the main event. This then I guess is a sort of tribute to him.

Celebrating the first Pride Parade in Southampton for 15 years, this transgender person is happy to be photographed. Although the first Gay pride rally was held in London in 1972 many smaller cities in the United Kingdom have been slow in celebrating LGBT diversity, but with a large student population Southampton has finally caught up with modern thinking at a colourful fun-filled event. I was on the lookout also for photos for the National geographic assignment about hair, and felt this fitted the bill. Taken using an M9 with 35mm Summitar f2.5. Gerry
