    A Black Country portrait

Probably the last lens I would have considered using for a portrait would be a 10 mm hyper-wide lens but here's the result. I was in a very cramped cottage in the Black Country Museum in Warwickshire and the 10 mm was able to scoop in everything I wanted and dealt with the complex colour balance from daylight, candle light, and open fire exceptionally well I feel. While I'm aware that there are some imperfections I'm pleased with the picture. I wanted to show the subject in her surroundings as it would have looked 150 years ago. Thank you for finding the time to look at my picture and your comments are welcome. M10 with Voigtlander 10/5.6 Heliar Hyper-wide.

    Gemma the roller derby girl

I spotted Gemma at a promotional event as part of the 'Music in the City' initiative in my home town of Southampton, England. I just loved the way she was 'out there' making her own fashion statement. She kindly let me make this image. Leica M240 + 35mm Summarit f2.5. 1/45 at f11 @ 320 iso handheld. Gerry

    The Chinese

The Chinese believe in recording their every family member in meticulously recorded detail. These records are kept at the family home for generations, usually tended by an elder. I was very privileged to be shown this families records and, after some persuasion, was allowed to take his picture. But he only allowed me a few seconds and I had to work with what was available for light. Hope you like it. M9 with 35mm Summicron IV. If people are interested, I can post more of these travel portraits on this thread maybe. Or each as a separate thread? Mod advice please!

    Robert Freson, photojournalist

Recently I spent the day with photographer Robert Freson who now lives on Bailey's Island in Maine. Bob was Irving Penn's assistant for twelve years starting in 1950 before setting out on his own. He printed many of Penn's great images during that period. Robert's work has been published in many magazines in Europe and America including National Geographic and Life magazines and his subjects include Sophia Loren, Gordon Parks, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth to name just a few. This candid portrait was made with a Leica M240 and 50mm Summicron lens.

    Pianist Julian Joseph

I took this portrait of English jazz pianist Julian Joseph in 2016 using my M9 and Zeiss 50mm f1.5 lens @ 1250iso. Shutter was 1/125 and aperture f5.7. It was shot as .dng for use by the theatre, and I have only just converted it to mono using LRCC. Lighting was stage lighting (i.e. no flash). Hope you like it! Gerry

    The hat maker

This is from my archives for the year 2000. I was on a trip to the US to lecture to a couple of photographic colleges and stopped off at a re-enactment village in Bethpage, Long Island where I photographed just 2 frames of this guy by natural light. The great fun of American re-enactment sites is that they are very serious, and he claimed that he had heard about photography but didn't realise cameras had become so small. I photographed by natural window light using a Leica M6 and 50mm Summicron f2 (I think!). The film was Kodak T400CN (C41 process) which I had taken so I could get it processed as I went and minimise the chances of fogging in airport x-ray machines. I have just rediscovered this after 17+ years, so I hope you like it. Gerry
