  1. Hello experts! :-) Anyone here who can tell me what I am looking at in the rangefinder illumination window? It’s a double stroke Leica M3 from 1957. Works great, and the viewfinder doesn’t show any other problems.
  2. One or two shots out 36 exp will have a straight strip of light down the side. Any advice or suggestion on cause, many thanks.

  4. Hello. My insatiable GAS has brought me to Leica M3 and M6 with a few lenses. I had been a longtime Canon user, now using Fujifilm for my digital photography. I've recently rediscovered film and have tried to get my hands on every iconic film cameras I've heard of growing up but was too poor to acquire, beginning with the Olympus OM-1. Since then I've bought, tried and sold about 50 film cameras from all the major players in the last century. From that I've narrowed it down to the cameras I absolutely love and will keep: Canon New F-1, Olympus OM4T, Nikonos V, Fujica ST801, Leica M3 and just in the last 2 weeks, the M6. Coming from the SLR world, there has been a bit of a learning curve using Leicas, but I see now why that name carries such a mystique. With SLR's it was always about capturing the moment in the easiest way possible. With Leicas, I feel like I'm creating art. I guess that's my point - Leicas, especially the M3, make me FEEL. I'm so glad I found these deals on eBay and CL (so lucky!) and honored to be part of this fraternity. Sincerely, Dan
  5. I just developed a Delta 100 film,(using my M3 and 50mm summilux) and found a bright point in each frame at the same place. I put a light in the place of the lens towards the shutter and found a tiny hole in the cloth of the shutter. Is it possible to close this tiny hole without changing all the cloth? Thank you, Edgard
  6. Hello! This is my first post to this forum and what better way to start it off but with asking for thoughts about a M3 with a 50/2 Dual Range Summicron I have the opportunity to buy locally. I currently have an M6 with a Zeiss 35mm 2.8 that I love, but I have been eyeing an M3 for quite a while. I only got a brief look at it the other day and was able to handle it for about a minute or two before I had to go. The viewfinder seems bright with a little dust and it seems to focus properly ( non of this is 100% since I was only able to spend a little time with it). I cant really remember what shape the metal of the body was in but I do know that the the leatherette will need replaced.I also did not have a chance to inspect internals or shutter speeds. The lens seems good and clear as well, no goggles though. It is a single stroke late model. I will be going back by today to pick up some film and plan to take a better look at it and hopefully take some pictures. The asking price for both together is $600.00, Is this something that I should not pass up? I will post pictures once I take a second look at it. Thanks!
  7. M3, 50mm summilux(pre-asph) tri-x Thank you for looking! ~f
  8. Hi, I'm a newbie (to Leicas and this forum) from Scotland. In the last 6 months I've traded-in all my Canon DSLR gear for a M7 and 50mm Summicron, and just last week I've picked up a M3. Apart from being a bit dirty inside, which I wasn't expecting seeing as I'd bought it from an authorised Leica dealer, it is in great condition with no obvious issues with patch alignment, shutter speeds etc. I put my Summicron on it today and noticed that the patches don't move through the full range of lens focusing distances; the infinity end seems ok but at the close focusing end the patches won't focus any closer than approx 3 or 4 feet i.e. as I move the focus ring past 4 feet towards the closest setting the patches stop moving. On my M7 the patches cover the full focusing range of the lens. As I said I'm a newbie to Leica and rangefinder cameras in general so just wanted to ask am I missing something obvious here or do I have an issue? Thanks in advance if anyone can help. Cheers, Liam.
  9. So, my M3 arrived on Christmas Eve and now has a roll of HP5+ in it. Still working on the settings to cope with the light and lack of meter (using iPhone Light Meter App for now). Just means taking two shots all the time as I realise I've checked something but not made any changes! A real change from my previous SLR/DSLRs - things are now always in focus, except in the little square. I know practice is the best form of learning, and I'm doing a lot of that. But does anyone have any recommendations for books on rangefinder technique?
  10. I'm sure this will have been raised before, but a search doesn't show it to me. How does the timer on the M3 work, step-by-step. I've focused the lens....do I press the shutter? the little button? both? before I waste too many shots trying different ideas, and then having to wait a while for the pics..... many thanks
Was würdet Ihr wählen und warum? Beide Kombis sind voll funktionstüchtig und die gebrauchten Komponenten würde ich als A-B Zustand bewerten. Danke für eure Anregungen und Meinungen. Besten Gruß und allzeit gut Licht Michael
  12. Hello All, I recently bought an M3 and two lenses - Summicron 50 mm f/2 and Summaron 35mm f/2.8, all in great shape. I love film but I am considering an M9. Will I be disappointed with these older lenes on a digital camera? Are the newer ones made specifically to work with digital cameras? I am not a professional and new to Leica. My main cameras are Nikon D3, D200 and Rolleiflex. I may have a hard time justifying getting an M9 if I will have to update my lenses. Considering the Q, if that is the case. I see there is an amazing amount of experience on this forum. Thanks for any insights.
  13. Post your mistakes. I love film and when things go wrong you can get some suprising results. Here's 3 double exposures from my M3 shooting Ilford Delta Pro 100. Oddly enough the double exposures are all in context and I really like them.
  14. Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m in a bit of a quandary and your feedback is much appreciated. By way of background, I purchased an M1 in mint cosmetic condition with the intention of having it converted to an M2 by a highly respected technician here in the US. I paid $200 for the M1. I like the M1’s simplicity (no preview lever, just a rewind lever and lens release). The technician could add a rangefinder and 28mm frame lines, my preferred focal length, making the newly converted M2 a perfect landscape/travel camera. I currently use a two-lens setup, with a 28mm (plus the external finder) and a 50mm on my M3. Unfortunately, the technician found dry shutter curtains upon opening the camera and they would need to be replaced at a cost that might be prohibitive. So here are my three options: 1. Add the new rangefinder, 28mm frame lines, shutter curtains, and a CLA for roughly $800. This would result in a near perfect Franken-Leica built to my specifications. Total invested would be about $1000. 2. Add new shutter curtains and a CLA. This would result in a near perfect M1 that I could sell and then reinvest in a different body. Total invested would be about $500. I’m not really sure what I could get for the overhauled M1. 3. Have the M1 returned and sell it as-is. Total invested would be $200 and I’d hope to recoup this expenditure with the sale. What do you think would be the best course of action? Any advice would help.
  15. Can't think of a better way to contemplate the meaning of all lives, or to capture the essence than with an M.
  16. Can anyone shed light on whether Leica is/has restricted the availability of spare parts to repairers outside their official repairers in Australia? Several weeks ago my M3 suffered a detached shutter curtain and I contacted several repairers worldwide and all informed me that they could do the work so obviously they had access to the correct parts. On contacting a well renowned repairer here in Oz he informed me that some time ago he attempted to seek some parts for a job and was told by Leica Australia that the policy now was no internal parts were being supplied. I contacted the Leica repairers (Camera Clinic, Melbourne) and they said they also could not come by the part, and furthermore, Leica Germany was no longer repairing film bodies. Finally I emailed Leica Australia and within several days they replied that the part was available, gave me the cost (very reasonable) and said it would be approx. 4 weeks for delivery?! I am now awaiting the parts to arrive but it bothers me that there seems to be either some accidental or intentional misinformation being put out to the detriment of owners and users like myself. Thank you for any information you may have on this matter.
