  1. Curious to know if Panasonic has improved the quality of the view finder over the Leica SL. More specifically, what bothers me about the SL finder is: 1. When under exposing the image by more than a stop the blacks become very milky and you can't see much detail in the shadows (Often required to prevent highlight clipping) 2. It’s not very bright causing difficulties in bright conditions 3. Difficult to judge focus unless magnifying the image (I have 20/20 vision)

  3. I used to use an M240 and an M9 before that, however I was finding that when on holiday with family and young children I just couldn't manual focus fast enough and kept missing moments, or missing focus, so I decided to switch to an SL with the 24-90mm to get the benefits of autofocus (and to save some lens swapping). I love the SL. The 24-90mm is so versatile that I've found to my surprise I don't even really use my old M lenses any more. In fact I think I'll be selling my M lenses. However, after a year with the SL, and taking it on holiday over the summer, I have one misgiving which is the weight. I switched from a shoulder strap to a hand strap which helped a lot, but even so I can't say I relish the thought of carrying it around all day when heading out on a trip. I was thinking that a CL might be a great compromise. I'd probably get the 18-56mm and the 35mm f/1.4 to start with, but only take one of those out with me. I'd have to sell the SL as I'd find it hard to justify having both, but I might keep the 24-90mm to try on the CL and just in case I regret the change in the future. The CL photos posted on this forum look fantastic, somewhat alleviating my worries about going down to an APS-C sensor. I'll miss being able to back-button focus, but I think I'll adapt. However I've read the forum posts saying that the SL (and the Q) really are a step up in quality compared to the CL, which makes me nervous. Has anyone else here downsized from the SL? Any regrets?
  4. Ladies and gents, I searched the net since quite some time for experiences and examples that demonstrate the performance and quality of Leica M10 or SL files for large printing. With large prints I mean sizes up to 150cm (60") on the long side. There are lots of comparisons and reviews between cameras of different makes, e.g. between SL and Hasselblad X1D, but they concentrate mainly on usability or spec-sheet resolution etc. They don't say anything about the final product, which is the print. Print quality from files of a particular camera is nearly never mentioned or discussed. I would like to ask the community here for experiences with printing large from Leica full frame cameras such as M10, SL, 240 or even M9. I know, many of the answers will state "quality is subjective", "depends on viewing distance" or "depends on expectation", etc. But maybe this thread is able to shed some more light on people's experience. I'm sure there must be some prints out there of such sizes. Did you send your SL or M images for example to services such as whitewall.com to produce such large prints? Do you print yourself? How do M or SL files hold up in a 40x60" print? Are they totally inferior to a print from digital medium format... ? Cheers, Peter

  6. I've just received Nissin's potato masher MG10 flash (Sony version). (The flash itself is not brand-specific; only the controller that shipped with the flash is.) The Sony version of the Nissan A10 commander works on camera triggering the MG10 on a Sony A73. And it looks like a great product (but be sure to order some 26550 Lion batteries to really unlock the power of the flash and avoid having to keep spare sets of 8 AAs around.) The Leica SCF-1 when paired with the MG10 will trigger the MG10 flash when the test button is pressed on the SCF-1 commander. So far, so good. But when the trigger is in the hotshoe, pressing the shutter on the SL or the CL does not fire the MG10. Nothing happens (thought the commander test button still fires the flash) Nothing wrong with the SCF-1 as Leica SF-60 flash works fine with the trigger. I suspect this is a firmware issue (either for the MG10 or for the Leica SCF-1). Before I pester Nissin, I want to ensure this isn't operator error. So, I am curious if anyone has successfully used the MG10 with the Leica SCF-1 controller placed in the hotshoe of an SL or CL? As I said, I know the flash is seen by the SCF-1, as the commander's test button does trigger the flash.

  12. Hi folks, I believe this may be my first post here, though it's been an informative resource as a consumer of forum posts! I appreciate your insights as I think through a very important question. I turn 50 in October and I'd love to mark the occasion by purchasing a 50mm lens for my Leica SL. Outside work and family, my deepest passion is photography and I want to feed that love. I currently have the 24-90 and it's been an amazingly fantastic landscape camera! Even with its weight I absolutely love taking it out into the woods and trails and seeing what I see. But I've been longing for a dedicated 50mm lens for years now; it's a focal length that I love to shoot with and I'm feeling anxious to get back to it more often. I also have the Q, which I often travel with and use for family snapshots and other documentary purposes. I've long dreamed of a 50mm Q, but I'm not convinced we'll ever see one. Long ago I had a Zeiss Ikon and paired it with the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 lens for dreamy captures. But both died along the way. I've rented digital M's a couple of times, but, as much as I love using them in some ways, my older eyes (with glasses) struggle with the rangefinder VF. I recently rented the M10 with a 50mm Summicron and came to the same conclusion again. I later rented a CL with the 35mm TL. The CL was great, but did not interest me enough to buy one. However, the 35mm TL was amazing and I also tried it on the SL, where it worked wonderfully. That was a much smaller, lighter kit than the 24-90, but of course the files are smaller. Now to my question for which I would greatly appreciate your own thoughts and experiences: as stated, for my 50th I plan to purchase a Leica 50mm lens to pair with the SL. Naturally, there's the Summilux-SL, but there's also M-mount 50mm lenses (for which I'd probably go with a Summicron). It's between those that I'm deciding. FWIW manually focusing on the SL is not an issue. We all know the technical and characteristic differences between the lenses - what I'm really looking for is your own usage experiences and preferences. What your mind told you and what your heart told you. Any other related inputs also appreciated. That won't be my deciding factor, but your stories are highly valuable. I may also rent them before buying; I have not decided on that yet (given the rental costs). TIA!
Wieder Farbstich beim DNG.

  16. Hi All SL-users! I have had my SL for some months and used mostly M-R lenses with the adapers and the 24-90 Zoom which covers most situations. The system is heavy, but once you get used to it, -you start wondering why not use lenses of your 645 cameras:)? I have the Contax 645 lenses and wonder if anyone has found suitable adapter to use these on the SL - even if the AF and some other functions might be lost? Some time back there were still companies which made tailor-made adapters, but I have learned that we are maybe past those times?;) However, there are individuals who are keen to solve problems and I remember someone making an AF-unit of Nikon's 16A-teleconverter, which was not that difficult after all... Even the Photokina exhibition might have revealed something on this front? So, -please, share any of your experience and of this topic? if there are any:)? br Hans
  17. A couple of days ago, during the Workshop I am leading here in Asturias, we were talking about Tuscany and its amazing landscapes: I immediately started thinking about the beauty of this land in the fall, and realised once more that I can't wait to be back there very soon! 18. Hi, I went out to the woods for a photowalk today with the Leica SL and for some creative inspiration I experimented with different aspect ratios, primarily 1:1 and 3:1 (panoramic). My question is about how the SL creates the various aspect ratio DNG files. But first... After I got home I downloaded the image files and began to look at them in Iridient Developer. When I opened the 1:1 or 3:1 image files (DNGs), they crashed Iridient Developer. After some experimentation I figured out that I have to open them through the app (File - Open) rather than from the Finder, and I have to make sure the Default Aspect Ration (RAW) setting is set to Use Camera File Size in the Open File dialog box. Then, Develop opens the uncropped full size DNG image. As far as I can tell, Developer cannot read the Leica SL aspect ratio crop information in the DNG file. Developer did manage to open a couple of 3:1 images and hold them open for a few seconds before crashing, and indeed those DNG files were correctly cropped to 3:1. That challenge was how I learned that the Leica SL may be treating the aspect ratios in different ways. What I learned is that in creating the 3:1 aspect ratio image the SL takes a rectangle from the center of the image, not an edge to edge crop of the full sensor (does that make sense?). I would have assumed that images taken at 3:1 in the SL would simply crop the image top and bottom to create the 3:1 panoramic image, and allow the full width of the image to go edge to edge. Instead, what the SL is doing is creating a 3:1 image from a center rectangle from the sensor, and thus cropping not only the top and bottom but sides too. I'll attach a screenshot from Photoshop to show what I'm describing here. This is when I opened the DNG file and selected the Crop tool in Camera Raw. When I do that, you can see the default "crop" of the SL 3:1 aspect ratio. In any event, that behavior sounds odd to me; unexpected at least. Therefore, I'd love to learn how the SL creates the various aspect ratios (at least for the DNGs). Are there any resources online where I can learn about that? I can also experiment with my SL, but since Developer apparently can't read the cropped DNGs I'd have trouble doing that on my own (FWIW I opened one of the DNG files in Photoshop and it defaulted to the cropped 3:1 image). TIA!

  20. The new Voigtländer Nokton 1,2/50mm arrived on monday and after some initial indoor tests I finally took it outdoors with the Leica SL. I have to say that I really like this lens. Wide open sharpness is good enough for me(I don't make huge prints and for portraits a little softness is sometimes more than welcome). Stopped down the lens is pin-sharp. Here some pictures from today, Leica SL/Nokton wide open
  21. I’m curious to ask what Leica SL shooters use for filming and what they think of it. I’m filming weddings with the Sony A7III and I’m happy with it. I also use the have a Leica Q. I’m wanting my films to look like the images that come out of Q. Any advice would be most appreciated Thanks

Eversberg Sauerland Flickr
