Hi all, Saw that there was no own sharepoint/topic for this lens so I thought to start one. I am about to acquire one and I would like to know your story and insights about this lens. Mostly to be used with my M6. One thing I am curious about, is all models made from 1990 to 2007 the same in terms of optics? I read something about the later versions being better. How rare are modern silver M wide angle lenses below 35mm? Specifically the Elmarit 21mm f/2.8 ASPH and Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH? What is the total count of the two? How about Summicron 28 ASPH? The latter is apparently not brass...? How many silver chrome Summilux 28's were made before they were discontinued? Any silver Summilux 24's? Was there ever the SEM 21mm Super-Elmar ASPH f/3.4 in silver? What about Elmar 24 f/3.8 ASPH? I have also seen a silver MATE but no WATE? And the silver Elmarit 28mm f/2.8 ASPH was finished in 775 pieces only?

Hi, I have purchased a new lens Elmarit M 28mm it is on the way.Till now I had only 50mm Summicron which I use on my M6 Classic. I need advices about what focus distance you set for zone focusing. This is the chart, I mainly will need 1.5 - infinity or to 17 m.From the chart I thing when I’m on f/8 3mm focus gives me best focus space.What you preset on f/5.6 f/4 f/2.8? At what distance usually your subjects are, I’m talking about street photography and film only!

Hello everybody Currently Im considering buying a 90mm M Lens. I tried the LEICA 90mm 2.8 ELMARIT M, which handles great (size and weight). The optical performance is fine. Does anybody know a comparison, review or something like it, between the LEICA 90mm 2.8 ELMARIT M and the Voigtländer 90MM 2.9 APO SKOPAR VM ? I wonder if the Voigtländer is optically that much better, since I tend to prefer the build of the leica 90 elmarit. The LEICA 90mm f/2 ASPH APO-SUMMICRON-M and the LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M are also contenders, yet I think the 90 APO summicron would be to large and heavy for my taste. the LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M is totally unknown to me. Does anybody know a direct comparison between the 90mm M lenses, particularly the ones I mentioned? Or a recommendation ? kind regards -

Hi everyone, I use Leica M6 with 50mm Summicron. I need a 28mm lens and I’m hesitating among Elmarit M 28mm and Zeiss ZM 28mm Biogon.I have seen many reviews and my inclinations are to Elmarit.I really like the newest small version, but is too expensive. I have read that there is some problem with 3rd version, is this true? Is the difference between 3rd and 4th version so big? what are tour recommendations? Please, my question is only about these two brands, no Voigtlander, 7Artissian etc

I bought a M9-P, and it came together with a Tele-Elmarit-M 1:2.8/90. The serial number on the aperture ring is 3430091. I would like to have more information on this lens like the production year etc., so I looked it up on https://reddotcamera.net/leica/serial-number-tool/ and on https://reddotcamera.net/leica-lenses/serial-number/. Both databases say it's a Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 - but it isn't! How can this be? Was the same serial number given to different lenses? How can I find out more about my Tele-Elmarit-M?

Most of us seem to be photographers as well as collectors. Show me your favorite lenses, old and new alike. I like the Noctilux range for the extreme apertures, but I prefer the Summilux range for the best speed:size/weight ratio. Here’s a Summilux gathering of 21, 24, 28, 35, 50 and 75mm. All in black.

Hello. I have the Elmarit 28mm f2.8 asph. But it is a 11606. I am embarrassed to say that I am a geek and prefer the 11677 hood. Some Leica users say that the 11606 is more compact and better, or that the 11677 has better image quality, but I don't know. I'm a nerd who chooses cameras based on looks, so the 11677 hood looks shiny to me, because the 11606 hood is plastic! Will there be a new metal hood for the 11606? If not, I'll have to get the 11677 after I give up the 11606. I know it seems a bit silly but LOL I'll wait for your reply.

I have a question about choosing the right 28 mm M lens for landscape photography. If it has been asked in other posts already, I apologise in advance. Background I have decided to buy a 28mm for my M240. It will be used for landscape photography almost exclusively. For the first time in my life, I am leaning towards an Elmarit ASPH. However, I always have this nagging inner voice telling me, that Summilux and Summicron are the only ways to go no matter the situation. So before buying, I want to make sure that I will not be compromising on any key aspects important to me with an Elmarit. And since I live in a place where trying different lenses before buying is not an easy alternative, I turn to all you skilled Leica experts in here for advice. My needs I will be shooting at apertures between f/8 - f/11 most of the time. And I will only rarely be focusing on objects very close. So I am not that concerned about bokeh (which I guess is not that relevant for a wide-angle lens anyway). The same thing goes for color rendering, since I’m shooting digital and will be postprocessing the RAW files anyway. However, I am very interested in achieving good sharpness from corner to corner. And I am also concerned about the handling of lens flare. Question Do you think the Elmarit ASPH will be the right choice for my purpose? Or will the 28mm Cron or Lux in any of their incarnations perform noticeably better under the above circumstances? Reading lots of reviews, both the Cron and the Lux obviously outperforms the Elmarit for low light situations. But will there be differences in image quality, sharpness and flare handling when stopping down to f/8 - f/11? Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks! - Peter. -
Hi Guys, Am fairly new to Leica (6 months in) and I would like to seek your advice on which 35mm lens to get. I currently use a M240 body with a 60mm F1.2 Konica Hexanon and a 50mm Summicron APO. I am looking to add a 35mm lens to compliment my existing collection (and will be looking at add a 28mm Elmarit when the new one releases end of the month). I am considering the follow: 35 Summilux Pre-ASPH 35 Summicron Pre-ASPH Version 1 35 Summicron Pre-ASPH Version 4 35 Summicron ASPH (2016 edition) After doing some extensive research, I feel like the 3 Pre-ASPH lens may be a better compliment as it is softer / has more of a leica glow (since my 50mm APO and the 28mm Elmarit are both bitingly sharp)? I was originally going to just get a 28 and 50 and NOT the 35 since it seems to be too close to the other 2 focal lengths, so I am now thinking maybe getting something with more of a unique characteristic). Just wondering what all your thoughts are and why you think so? Your kind assistance is very much appreciated. Thank you. Best Regards, J -
Hi all, a while ago I've bought a used Elmarit-M 90mm (latest version) for which I found a few days ago by accident that the aperture blades do not fully disappear when the lens is used wide open. Consequently, the bokeh balls aren't circular, but have a more "saw blade"-like shape. If I turn the aperture ring beyond 2.8, which is possible by a tiny bit, the blades retract a bit more, but never completely (cp. attached images). As I wasn't sure whether this is by design or a defect, I have contacted Leica Support and they tell me that this is the normal behaviour, but offer a CLA for the lens nonetheless. Could any other owner please check with his or her lens? Thanks in advance, Rolf

Something I consider to be a glaring omission from Leica's current M-lens line-up is a light, compact, 35mm lens. Or am I missing something? F2.8 would be quite adequate considering the high ISOs available on the M10. The target market would be those for whom minimum size and weight is a major actor, plus those seeking a lower cost entry into the world of Leica M. As it is, Voigtlander offer just such a lens, though the reviews are mixed. I assume such a lens would be called an Elmarit, as the code seems to be Elmar -f4.0 Elmarit f2.8 -chron f2.0 -lux f1.4 or faster. Any comments as to when such a beast might become available, or should I just go and buy the Voigtlander?

Hola everyone! I had a hunch! And I made a lens exchange with a colleague. I changed my Elmarit 28mm for a Zeiss C Biogon T 35mm F2.8. Of course, I got also some very good money because of the difference in price ($2,300 vs $900 approx). I tested already and I'm incredibly happy with the result. I'm new in the world of Rangefinder, I only owned an Elmarit for one year, and now this one. I always used lenses for SLR and DSLR. So I'm very newbie. I was so surprised (in a very good way) about the Zeiss contrast, details, sharpening and almost the lack of imperfections... Wow... so light, small but soooo powerful. I'm a 35mm guy, I always have been. I got a 28mm with my first Leica (M10) because my plan was a 28+50 combo. One lens first, then later the 50mm. I didn't resist and I made the change. And I was 100% happy about it. I like the 35mm frames better than the 28mm. And the focus ring range is better, shortest. I like 1/3 aperture stops etc.... Check also this video at 1'08" The little four screws are tight. And of course, most important... The lens performance is almost perfect, better than any Nikon I ever had 🙂 It works great. I just got an Elmarit 28mm V4 lens e46 that came without any protection. Can anyone tell em which front cap will fit the lens. I have also red about the lens hood and some people said the R hood version fits with the 28mm M version ? Thanks for your response PL

I experimented with IR photography using my Elmarit 28/2.8 on the M8. I realized that this lens appears to cause a significant hot spot under IR conditions, especially with apertures 8 and up. Can you please share your experience with other lenses on the M8 when using for IR photography? Thanks! Ralph

M9 Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8 @f5.6 Capture One V11 A monochrome day that looked like it felt in the M9 natural colour palette. You have to admire Leica for their choice of colour parameters for this camera's output, it makes it effortless, I don't think I have ever found settings for the Nikon output as satisfying but reports are the new D850 is "different" in that respect. Get thee behind me. The green on the Trees is Lichen BTW.
