Ok - call me crazy, weird, mad, bored, out of focus, trend follower - what ever you like. I have it. Sorry - only iPhone photos. Unpacking and first impressions: Beauty - compared to many others. Impractical - compared to state of the art in handling. Unique - compared to many nowadays bubble-swirly-something bokeh cameras. Unexpected - in its characteristics and rendering. The beauty - I like it’s look on a silver M. Yes - it’s impractical. Turning the aperture ring means turning the focus ring too. Too much rotation for focussing. Hood fixing - OMG. Removing lens cap means removing hood unintentionally. So it gives an idea what photography meant in 30’s…. However - I accept it. It’s an impractical beauty. And the first guy I showed it said: „Wow - a real historical camera an looking brand new!“ Unique - as far as I can see after just a few shots in the city. I have a Petzval 58 and a Meyer Görlitz Trioplan 100mm. I’m going to sell them now to make my Thambar a little bit cheaper to me. Because it’s far beyond these lenses. All these "swirly-bokeh-pieces" are nothing against the bokeh and the glow of this lens. Unexpected - in street lights at night wide open IMO shows an ugly and a beautiful side: With center spot filter ugly rings or donuts. Without interesting glow around lights and nice or at least acceptable bokeh-bubbles out of focus. Yes - it is sharp - even wide open - eh - somehow. Kind of „soft sharp“. Low micro contrast but letters can be read - in center. To me it's really amazing. And as mentioned - glow everywhere where a bit of light comes across. In short: This lens is crazy. And I seem to become Thambar-crazy. Unfortunately the subject which this lens is made for - portrait and nature - I can't take before later this month. Of course I’ll show some examples here then. For the moment I have just a few shots made on my way from my friendly dealer - and just to see the effects of rendering. After all this partly boring examples in the web I hardly dare to add some others. OK - I do.

Hi all, Saw that there was no own sharepoint/topic for this lens so I thought to start one. I am about to acquire one and I would like to know your story and insights about this lens. Mostly to be used with my M6. One thing I am curious about, is all models made from 1990 to 2007 the same in terms of optics? I read something about the later versions being better. Hi all, a while ago I've bought a used Elmarit-M 90mm (latest version) for which I found a few days ago by accident that the aperture blades do not fully disappear when the lens is used wide open. Consequently, the bokeh balls aren't circular, but have a more "saw blade"-like shape. If I turn the aperture ring beyond 2.8, which is possible by a tiny bit, the blades retract a bit more, but never completely (cp. attached images). As I wasn't sure whether this is by design or a defect, I have contacted Leica Support and they tell me that this is the normal behaviour, but offer a CLA for the lens nonetheless. Could any other owner please check with his or her lens? Thanks in advance, Rolf

I bought a M9-P, and it came together with a Tele-Elmarit-M 1:2.8/90. The serial number on the aperture ring is 3430091. I would like to have more information on this lens like the production year etc., so I looked it up on https://reddotcamera.net/leica/serial-number-tool/ and on https://reddotcamera.net/leica-lenses/serial-number/. Both databases say it's a Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 - but it isn't! How can this be? Was the same serial number given to different lenses? How can I find out more about my Tele-Elmarit-M?

Hey everyone, I wanted to create a bit of a fun competition. Given the scary times we are all living in, Halloween this year will be spent in our homes and probably there wont be any trick or treaters. That is why its a perfect opportunity to share your “scariest” shots. These can be shots of scary subjects, scary edits or simply creepy shots you have taken. Hallo Ich habe ein günstiges Angebot gesehen für ein Summicron-M 90mm von 1989. Ich benutze die M3 und die M9. Wie verhält sich diese Version im Vergleich zu anderen 90mm Cron? Sind die neuen besser? Wichtig sind mir Schärfe bei Offenblende und Bokeh (runde Ringe). Danke, David

Hello everybody Currently Im considering buying a 90mm M Lens. I tried the LEICA 90mm 2.8 ELMARIT M, which handles great (size and weight). The optical performance is fine. Does anybody know a comparison, review or something like it, between the LEICA 90mm 2.8 ELMARIT M and the Voigtländer 90MM 2.9 APO SKOPAR VM ? I wonder if the Voigtländer is optically that much better, since I tend to prefer the build of the leica 90 elmarit. The LEICA 90mm f/2 ASPH APO-SUMMICRON-M and the LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M are also contenders, yet I think the 90 APO summicron would be to large and heavy for my taste. the LEICA 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M is totally unknown to me. Does anybody know a direct comparison between the 90mm M lenses, particularly the ones I mentioned? Or a recommendation ? kind regards -

M9 Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8 @f5.6 Capture One V11 A monochrome day that looked like it felt in the M9 natural colour palette. You have to admire Leica for their choice of colour parameters for this camera's output, it makes it effortless, I don't think I have ever found settings for the Nikon output as satisfying but reports are the new D850 is "different" in that respect. Get thee behind me. The green on the Trees is Lichen BTW.

Guten Tag zusammen. Ich habe mal wieder meine alte Leica m6 ausgepackt und zurück ins Leben geholt. Alles funktioniert soweit noch einwandfrei, bis auf den Bildfeldwähler. Ich habe ein Summicron 50mm Objektiv drauf und der Bildausschnitt von 50 + 75 mm wird auch im Sucher angezeigt. Der Ausschnitt 35 + 135 mm wird beim zur Seite bewegen des Hebels auch sichtbar. Nur der Ausschnitt 28 + 90mm zeigt sich beim nach innen bewegen des Hebels nicht. Es bleibt der 50 + 75 mm Ausschnitt zu sehen. Hat jemand schonmal von diesem Problem gehört und weiß was die Ursache dafür sein könnte. Dr Google konnte mir bis hierhin leider nicht weiterhelfen... liebe Grüße und danke im Voraus!

hi all! I have 35 and 75, both lux. but some times I would like to get picture quality as at my 35 lux. 75 bit different. looking at 90/2.8, 90/2, 90/2AA... I shoot landscapes, portraits. not sure but maybe 180/2.8 or 180/2.8 APO as I also wanted something longer than short tele. use these at typ 240 and Sony a7II. any ideas?

Hallo, tja, manchmal kommt es anders als man denkt. Nach Recherche, Bilder schauen etc. pp - ihr kennt das alle - bin ich heute nach der Arbeit losgezogen um entweder ein neues oder gebrauchtes 50er Summicron zu kaufen. Also verschiedene gebrauchte ausprobiert. Hmm, die einen wackeln, die anderen sind nicht 100% scharf. Bis auf ein silbernes gebrauchtes für rund 1800 Euro, alles nix wirklich tolles. Dann kann ich auch gleich ein Neues nehmen. Naja, dann aber immer noch ein wenig rumgeschaut und ein sehr schönes, hervorgend gehaltenes 2.8er 90er Elmarit gesehen - zefix, Fokus leicht und perfekt, bei Offenblende sehr, sehr scharf und prinzipiell ja nicht viel größer als mein 1.4 35 Zeiss (ein Traumoptik übrigens). Preis war auch sehr gut, also mitgenommen. Aber eigentlich wollte ich doch ein Summicron - da der Sauter die Leicapreisanpassung noch nicht gemacht hat, ab zum Sauter - das Leben ist nunmal manchmal teuer ... beim Sauter, dann aber doch noch das Zeiss Planar angesehen. Hmm, auch sehr schnuckig. Klein, leicht, sehr gut verarbeitet und statt 2040, halt nur etwas über 700 Euro. Also hin und her verglichen, Laptop aus dem Auto geholt und ... ich konnte keinen wirklichen Unterschied bei der Optik feststellen - und ich wollte wirklich einen sehen. Ach ne, eigentlich sollte doch das 50er ein Leica werden ... am Ende hat dann doch die Vernunft gesiegt und ich habe mich für das Planar entschieden. Sollte es mich irgendwann mal jucken, kann ich immer noch wechseln. Am Ende habe ich noch einen schönen Paketpreis bekommen und die Zeiss-Geli für das 50er und 35er auch noch dazugenommen. Und so kommts manchmal anders als man meint ... Das das Planar sehr gut ist, wusste ich schon, wirklich überrascht hat mich aber das alte 90mm 2.8er Elmarit (mit Ausziehblende) - das Ding ist eine Hammeroptik und extrem easy zu fokusieren. Wer nicht zwingend das Summicron braucht, kann hier bedenkenlos zuschlagen. Für Leicaverhältnisse ein echtes Schnäppchen. Anbei natürlich noch ein paar Bildchen die auf dem Heimweg und Zuhause mit den beiden Optiken entstanden sind, nichts weltbewegendes, aber halt die ersten ... Gruß Daniel

Hallo Zusammen, ich hoffe, meine Frage ist nicht schon zum Xten mal behandelt worden, aber ich bin bei meiner Suche nach einem 90iger als Laie und Anfänger etwas durcheinander geraten. Ich besitze seit letztem Jahr eine Leica M9 mit einem Summicron 35mm und einem Summicron 50mm beide aus Canada und für meine Begriffe bekomme ich da schon schöne Fotos hin. Jetzt habe ich im Urlaub in Monschau zuweilen eine etwas längere Brennweit vermisst, da ich z.B. an Gebäuden, alten Häusern manchmal kleine Verzierungen gefunden habe, die ich mit dem 50iger nur schwer abbilden konnte. Auch Fotos von den streunenden Straßenkatzen waren problematisch, das sie mich nur auf gewisse Distanz heranließen. Also etwas mehr Brennweite wäre nicht schlecht, wie so oft ist da Budget überschaubar (+-600€) Jetzt find ich in der Bucht oder bei einschlägigen Shops gebrauchte Linsen zu akzeptablen Preisen, die hier im Forum vermittelten Informationen verwirren mich aber eher ein wenig. Was wäre denn passend für die M9, für Aufnahmen draußen bei gutem Wetter mit ausreichender Schärfe? Gefunden habe ich das Tele Elmarit, das Elmar, das Summicron oder auch ein Rokkor. Hat Jemand einen Tip für mich? Da ich hier in der Provinz ( was Leica-Shops angeht) eher auf die Online-Möglichkeiten angewiesen bin, kann ich natürlich kaum probieren. Und übrigens, das Gewicht spielt nur eine Nebenrolle, komme von der Nikon D200 mit großem Gepäck, bin da also abgehärtet. Für Infos jeder Art bin ich dankbar. Gruß Heiner

Film arrived from Amazon. M3 arrived from eBay. Looks clean and great. Collapsible vintage 90 arrived. I mount it on the camera. Extend it. Aperture clicks smoothly. But focus is stuck. I know that this lens locks focus until lit is extended and twisted clockwise. I've done that. And tried pressing the button on the lens, bout that seems only to permit it to collapse. Am I missing a key step or did I get suckered on eBay? I'm guessing its user error but can't find anything on Ken Rockwell or here to suggest what that might be. Thanks in advance!
