  1. Apart from the $300 Leica service, one way to get lenses coded is to replace the flange, or send it away for coding to a third party. This led me to do some research on flanges. There is a Chinese vendor offering what I call Type I flanges, and also Type II ones. Here is what I found out. Note that:- All measurements in degrees clockwise from the centre of the key as viewed looking at the rear of the lens. Measurement are approximate and have been rounded to what appears to be the nearest whole number. All flanges come in three variations for 28/90, 50/75, or 24/35 viwefinder frame lines. 6-bit code start 115 finish 142 Type I flanges These appear to be on all digital era lenses as the screws don't invade the code area. Six screws at 40 80 160 210 275 340 Type II flanges Examples I have seen include Product Year 11815 1982 Summilux 75mm f/1.4 11800 1973 Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.8 11134 1991 Elmarit 21mm f/2.8 Six screws at 60 72 36 72 72 36 Note that the second screw sits right in the 6-bit code area and looks like a "1" to the sensor. Thus uncoded lens with type II flange looks to have code 000100. Which is great if it is the 90mm above, but a problem elsewhere. Type III flanges I have only seen one. Product Year 11817 1968 Summicron II 50mm f/2.0 Five screws at 45 135 225 270 315 Again, the second screw sits right in the 6-bit code area and looks like a "1" to the sensor. Worse though, if that screw is omitted, there will be a full 180 degrees without one. I'm not sure if the flange would stay flat and square under such circumstances. Type O flanges I call them this as they have no screws at all in the face of the flange This makes it difficult to remove. I think all the early lenses were made like this Examples are Product Year 11631 1955 Elmar 90mm f/4.0 11870 1967 Summilux 35mm f/1.4 - (this has screws around the edge of the flange) 11118 1953 Summicron (I) 50mm f/2.0 11850 1961 Elmar 135mm f/4.0 16464 OTZFO M-mount for Visoflex lens heads also the Voigtlander 12mm Ultra-Wide Heliar (are all Voigt. flanges screw-free?) I hope this helps.
  2. Good day! May I ask those who have the experience, that if it is important to go through the trouble of packing/sending/costs/time-waiting to have a Leica 50/f1.4 ASPH-M lens retro fit with the 6-bit code? Any real or worthy advantages? Or it is fine as it is without the 6-bit code (for use on the digital M cameras)?
  3. Hi, I have a Summilux 50 version 2 which I would like to have 6-bit coded. Leica doesn't offer code this lens so I wonder if anyone knows a place in Hong Kong that does. I like the lens but keep forgetting to set the manual lens selection when when I put it on or switch back to automatic when I use another lens. Regards, Bernd
  4. I'm a returnee to Leica (had an M3 and a IIIg many years ago) and have come back (new M9, M6 & a swag of lenses) after many years. I still love my Nikon gear though... I'm looking for a reliable repairer/maintenance provider in Australia - I live in Alice Springs in central Australia but travel to the east coast fairly regularly - any suggestions? And I'm also looking for someone who a put 6-bit codes on my lenses so that i don't have to muck about with manual entry every time I change lenses. Any suggestions welcomed!
  6. I was getting close of getting a Leica 18mm SE when an opportunity to trade a DSLR lens for a used but mint Zeiss 18mm f/4.0 came up. I jumped on it. The Zeiss lens is RF coupled and it has a groove in the flange. So, the ink coding works fine without any smearing. It came coded as a WATE 16mm. I am really impressed with the images this Zeiss lens produces. Since I am planning the keep the lens, now I would like to code the Zeiss lens as a Leica 18mm SE. After wiping the existing WATE code clean, I entered the code for the 18mm SE but my M9 failed to detect the code. As matter of fact, the list of coding on my camera in the manual mode using the current firmware, doesn't list any 18mm SE. I wiped everything cleaned and coded that to the WATE 16mm and my camera recognizes that right away. I did that twice and both times my camera failed to recognize the lens as 18mm SE but the new WATE 16mm code was recognzed right away. My question is more addressed to the Leica 18mm SE and WATE owners. Does your camera actually detect and identify the 18mm SE properly although it is not listed on the manual code menu of the M9? How does the coding on the WATE work? Is the 16mm coding different than the setting for 18 or 21mm? I understood that the camera will give you the option of changing the focal length when using a "genuine" WATE but what does it take for me to get, at least, the Zeiss to detect 18mm instead of the fixed 16mm codes my M9 dictates? Thanks, Joshua
  7. I succumbed to the temptation.... Well, it didn't take much arm twisting , and I ended up with a 135mm APO-Telyt. However, this new lens is not 6-bit coded. I tried to get some info here as well as out there and I was not able to find any pattern on the coding of this particular lens. Could any of the owners of this lens that has been coded help me out, please. I do need the 6-bit code pattern of this lens. I realize that it would not do much, if any, for the correction but it is more for the EXIF data. In addition, what will be my best and fast bet of getting the 6-bit code put in? I found out about the Dymo method - is that still pretty much the best do-it-yourself method? Leica will take 2+ months to do this . Any help is appreciated, Joshua
