  1. Dear all I am quite the average photog. Try this, try that, nice Camera, lovely rendering, tele-lenses, wideangles, sunstars with f11, wide open shots, one or the other pretty decent shot. But it all boils down to this: For personal work and for the everyday joy of taking some snaps, I always come back to enjoying my 50mm lens. Sometimes I try to convince myself that using the standard focal lenth is supposed to be "boring", uninteresting field of view and all, so I try out different lenses, different shooting styles... All valid, of course, but I personally love the 50mm lens: - A bit of compression, but not very much so. Perfect for environmental scenes without having too much information in the frame. - Foreground (or background respectively) is not too sharp and overly distracting but still recognizable, especiallly using faster apertures like f2 or f2.8, so it still helps getting a message across. - Street photography with hyperfocal setting and gigantic DOF can produce wonderful results (depends on the ability of the photographer's eye anyhow!) but it's not for me. Can I invite you to share some shots that show a normal lens producing some interesting shots and why? Attached files show pictures taken during a 60 minute stroll at a horse fair with Sony A7ii and old Leica Summicron 50mm f2. English is not my mother tongue; please excuse any errors on my part. Cheers J
  2. Hi, I was wondering if we will get a 50 or 70 mm Noctolux but SL Body and AF. Would you love it? Would you buy it? Cheers
  3. Hi everyone. I'm looking to buy a 50mm f2 Leica M lens. I'm not interested in new, neither on the APO version. I want a very compact lens to go with my Leica M-D and potentially a Monochrome. Any recommendations or advice? I assume that although older, it should be able to resolve the 24 megapixel sensor images. Is that a fair assumptions? Thanks so much.
  4. Just saw this Nickel Rigid Summar 5cm f2 while browsing for lenses on a shops site, is that front "ring" a hood or part of the lens system?
  5. I am looking for a camera bag to fit the sl with the Vario 24-90 attached and an extra lens like a 50mm sl apo. Feel free to post pictures of your bag and share the name. Thanks in advance.
  6. Hi everyone, I have Leica M6 and Summicron M (V) 50mm. I see that in many of my close up portraits the focus is on the noose, but not on the eyes or oposite.I have focus on one spot of the face and another is missing. I have checked my DOF calculator and I see that if the subject is at 1m from me and I got aperture 2, 2.8, 4 the focus is only in one spot 1m - 1m.If I switch to f/5.6 the focus depth becomes 0.9m -1.1m which is 20cm difference good enough to have all head in focus. Please, share your experience on this matter.
  7. Hi all, I have the worst luck buying Leica gear. Just purchased my 2nd 50 Cron IV on eBay. The seller mentioned haze, and I asked a lot of questions about it, but he really described it as no big deal. Got it today and found a pretty harsh ring of haze (or?) when light is pushed through. Looks decent otherwise, but I paid a competitive price ($950 USD). I really don’t want to go through another eBay return—the seller only mentioned in a DM, where I was asking specific questions about the lens, that he would offer to return for me if I wasn’t happy. I’m a shooter, don’t mind imperfections, but I do like to have nice gear. Was thinking of sending out for a CLA and forget about it. Obviously another $100 that I don’t want to spend, but ugh. what do you guys think? edit: also the small set screws on the aperture ring show a small amount of rust. I was wondering if that might be a sign of what contributed to the optical issue, poor storage perhaps?
  8. While I was having coffee at my favourite place this guy was sat running his office over his cup of coffee. "Hi, it's Mike the Magician" he said down the telephone. Sadly the guy at the other end didn't seem to know who he was. I took this candid shot of him with the M240 + 50mm lens at 1600iso. I then processed it through Lightroom Classic. Hope you like it! Gerry
  9. The MS Optics 50mm 1.1 Sonnetar is very fast, noted on the description sheet as being f1.16. Now the MS Optics ISM 50mm 1.0 is available in M mount at only 178 grams. It is noted as f1.05 on the description. So it is only somewhat faster than the Sonnetar. If one already has a Sonnetar 50mm, not sure if they would be interested in this lens. With Gauss type lens it does not have the soonar qualities of the former, but apparently also not the tricky coma adjustment ring. 16 rounded aperture blades. Looks interesting though for digital or film, https://www.japancamerahunter.com/20...f-1-0-m-mount/

  11. Hey everyone, Looking for a bit of friendly advice and opinion. I currently have a Leica M-A and like to stick to the "One Camera, One Lens" method of keeping my work consistent and always improving. When people talk about this, one lens usually refers to focal length, not exactly one lens. After lots of trial and error I learned that I see in 50mm, so I prefer using that focal length for all of my shooting. However, I currently own a 50mm Summicron-M and a 50mm Elmar-M (both newest versions, both brass chrome). I can't decide if I should sell one, and if so which one, or keep both. The summicron is quite a bit heavier than the Elmar, although I wouldn't classify either as light since they are both the chrome versions. The Elmar obviously have a size advantage, but the annoyance of uneven aperture settings and the collapsible function can sometimes get annoying as it doesn't lock collapsed and can just slide out if positioned in such a way. I'm having a hard time deciding if it makes sense to keep both, and if not, which one to keep. I currently justify ownership of both by saying the Elmar, while limited, is more suitable for when I'm not out specifically to be shooting, but walking to work or just running errands. The smaller size is nice when I'm not focused specifically on shooting. I'll use the Summicron when I'm going out to shoot, as its usability is substantially better, at the cost of its size and weight, but when I'm shooting the camera is in my hand and not really packed away or even hanging from my neck. Let me know your thoughts everyone, interested to hear some opinions on the subject of owning multiple lenses of the same focal length. Thank you!
  12. Whilst walking through Lido Di Jesolo after a day out over summer I just so happened to be in the right place at the right time. The light streamed through a gap in the buildings diffusing the fountains with a beautiful golden light. Just at the moment a young girl decided to cool off. 13. I have a 50mm Summilux pre-asph that I’ve been using for several years on my M240. I’m satisfied with the photos from this lens but there are times when I would like different look in terms of color and/or sharpness. I would like to get a modern 50mm to supplement the pre-asph Summilux. The options I’m considering would be the APO-Summicron, Noctilux 0.95, or even a Summilux-asph. Potentially I might use the lens for everything – travel, street, portrait, etc. I’ve ready many of the forum discussions on the 50mm lenses, and looked at example photos on this forum, Flickr, and Facebook. All of these lenses are good and have their strengths and signature look. Maybe other forum members have gone through a similar lens upgrade or worked with these lenses so I would be interested in your experience and thoughts. I’ll make the final decision later in the year when I go to Germany and go lens shopping. Thanks, Mike
  14. Hello, I'm wondering if someone uses this lens on Leica Monochrom and can give me some advice. I was not happy with my Summicron 50mm collabsible on my Monochrom because of blury pics in the center. For those who wonder the front lens is in perfect condition. So I send it to Leica Service in Wetzlar. The repair would cost 520€. Now I'm wondering if someone can give me some example pictures of this lesns (in better shape) on the Monochrom, so that I can decide if I'll invest this amount of mony or if I save it for a later version of the Summicron. Thanks!
  15. Hello I have just taken ownership of an M9 and a Summicron 50mm f/2. I love the atmosphere and colour range of the first pictures but suspect that the sharpness of the focused area are below expectation for this wonderful lens. This is only noticeable at 100% crop. I find the outlines soft compared to examples I have found online and in print. I am aware of focus shift but just wanted to know how I should test if the lens is performing at optimum. I don't think I can share large images on this forum. Where should I look and who should I speak to? Any suggestions very welcome. Thanks William
  16. Morris dancing is a traditional folk dance from England and dates back hundreds of years. The dancers dance traditional jigs usually wearing bells and ribbons. It's thought the Morris comes from Moorish and they were imitating North Africa/Spanish dances. As you can see from the images, most of the dancers are older and it is thought that Morris dancing could die out. Though there has been a revival apparently with Neopagan Morris dancers and the 'Dark Morris' which comes from a Discworld novel! 17. Dear friends, I just came back from the lake area near Fuji Mountain in Tokyo. It was a great trip, although the weather was kind of bad.... it is simply too foggy to take a perfect shot of the Fuji Mountain. I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and tried to call for a taxi to the shooting location I have in mind. However.....no taxi....at all! As stubborn as I am, I decided to walk for 1.5 hours to the location for the sunrise shot. As I was walking towards to the destination, I have a bad feeling since I can see NOTHING over the lake. The Fuji mountain disappeared. After I arrived, I sat there waiting for the sun to rise. However, there came the sun, and I took my first shot.... here it is... "Ladies and gentlemen, Fuji Mountain Sun Rise!" DSC06961_s by Terence Yam, on Flickr I was disappointed but at the same time.... my stubbornness overpowered my brain again. I decided to sit there and wait for the perfect moment. It was so cold, and luckily I brought with me a bottle of hot coffee.... People started to come in, including some folks who decided to do canoeing on a foggy day. With nothing to do, I took some pictures of them. DSC06983_s by Terence Yam, on Flickr DSC07008_s by Terence Yam, on Flickr I have waited for more than three hours..... finally, my persistence paid back... the fog started to go away, and I was able to see the coast on my right-hand side. DSC07026_s by Terence Yam, on Flickr Ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to share with you this picture that I took under a big tree full of red leaves after three hours of wait! Hope you will enjoy it. 18. Good morning, This weekend I was in the lovely little town of Leamington Spa which happened to be hosting the 38th annual peace festival. The place was full of interesting characters so I stepped out of my comfort zone and asked a few if I could take their portrait. Feedback is welcome. All taken with my M9 and 50mm Summarit. 19. Good morning, From time to time I like to give myself a project to try and enhance my craft and keep me interested. This year my project is street portraits. It definitely puts one outside of one's comfort zone. My approach is simple, I look around for interesting characters, approach them and ask can I take their portrait. I have only been declined once (a nun who was praying) it is disappointing but important to respect this even when it means missing a fantastic shot! Most people are actually really happy to be asked, I like to chat a little whilst I am shooting to set people at ease and get more relaxed photos. People have even thanked me for taking time to talk to them which is really nice. I always show them the shot after on the LCD and tell them my website address to see the image later. I'm thinking of having some business cards printed to make this easier. I like to shoot wide open to get separation. One of the staff at Leica Store Manchester gave me the tip of focusing on the eye then moving your head slightly back and forward to find focus rather than use the ring (I'm sure people already know this but i thought it was a good tip). I like to shoot half a dozen frames whilst doing this to ensure focus is on the eye not slightly out. Though I do sometimes miss shots still and kick myself afterwards Anyway, here is one from a rather wet day in Kendal in the Lake District UK Street Portrait Kendal by Robert Michael Poole, on Flickr C/C always welcome. Thanks for looking Rob More street portraits can be seen on my website here: https://robertpoolephotography.com/portfolio/street-portraits/
  20. I have an opportunity to buy at pretty close to the same price, and in the same excellent condition, either a 1980 Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 (black) or a ten year old, six-bit coded Summicron-M 50mm f/2 (black). From Erwin Puts' write up, the older Summilux 50 should render much like my 1972 Summilux 35 does, my all time favorite Leica 35mm lens. And the Summicron will have the modern look that works so well in my Summarit-M 75. I like both ... but which one to choose is a puzzle. They're both clean and include caps and hoods (built-in on the Summicron); the Summicron also includes original box and such. I'd want to have the Summilux six-bit-coded. Briefly, which would you choose and why? thanks in advance!
  21. I'd like to get a hood for my 50mm Summicron f/2 Type 2 - Rigid. The obvious option seems to be the 12585 metal vented hood. A few questions with this one: Does the hood, which clips around the outside of the front (I think), interfere with filter use? Is the hood a bit on the large side for what is a pleasantly small lens? Is it possible to buy it with the cap that covers the reversed hood? Is it possible to buy that cap anywhere? And that leads me to the alternative, the 12549/12550 Chrome/Black Elmar 50/2.8 39mm screw in hood. This one /looks/ better to me but: Is it effective enough as a hood for the Summicron Rigid? Does it cause vignetting with a 39mm filter also in place? What size is the front opening to allow a cap to also be used? Or better yet - does the A42 slip on cap I already have fit right over it? Thanks.
