  1. I shot with Canon 5Ds until about 3 years ago when I went for a dalliance with Fuji then let my heart take over and invested heavily in the Leica M series. My first lens was the Summicron 50mm an ex demo but mint condition from Classic Cameras in London. Before this my goto focal length was between 80mm and 200mm with a canon 85mm 1.8 my favourite (there is a faster 85mm but the difference in IQ is not worth the extra money). My second lens was the Leica 90mm Summicron APO - obviously going to be my favourite lens...... errr no I have used it a couple of times on Weddings but seem to go back to 50mm or the 28mm of the Q. I have started to collect 50mm lenses and I have: 50mm Summicron f2 50mm Summilux f1.4 50mm Elmar f3.5 Collapsible 50mm 7Artisans f1.1 <-----------------dirt cheap but quite a character I'm at the point where perhaps I need to trim the number of 50mm's I have. I have an M10, Monochrom (CCD version) and M3 and can't use all three at the same time (I've tried). I like the Summilux and will keep that and then collapsible Elmar on the M3 or Monochrom renders character images. I have a couple of options for my main 50mm which is the 50mm Summicron APO or the 50 Noctilux. So I think the Summicron f2 will need to go and probably the 7Artisans. I could take the 90mm out of the mix as I have an S-E with a 120mm lens and its not a lens I've used much. Has anyone used both the Summicron APO and Noctilux? As I like shooting in low light does the Noctilux have the edge or for my portrait work would the summicron APO be better. I'm driving myself to distraction over this. I have found that Leica owners are constructive and less likely to threaten violence if someone has an opposite opinion. Paul
  2. A walk in the woods in west central Virginia. M9 50mm pre asph summilux, .5 sec f16 Many thanks for looking and especially for your comments.
  3. Happiness is priceless! <Shenzhen, China @ 2013> Tri-X-20130203-50S by TerenceYam, on Flickr
  4. While on a woodland walk... the day was overcast and on turning around ready to go home a break in the clouds allowed for a small pool of dappled light to illuminate this small berry bush. Really quiet dramatic. Very much in the spirit of this seasion. Many thanks for looking and for your comments.
  5. In Charlottesville Virginia, the University is lit and heated by means of a coal fired plant. It is one of 60 such plants located on university property and operated by a university in the USA. As one might imagine it is the source of considerable opposition from environmental groups. Photographically it is a dramatic structure and at night illuminated and clearly visible from the main drag in town makes for a powerful photo opportunity. Thanks for looking and for your comments.
  6. We drove down US I-81 and stopped to the Natural Bridge... once considered with Niagara Falls as among the natural wonders of the USA. It has been well photographed in the past especially from the side represented in the image below. The bridge is over 200 feet tall and once formed the roof of a huge cavern system through which a river ran. If I lived in the area I think I would try to photograph the bridge in all seasons and in varied weather conditions (snow, fog)... perhaps at sunset as well... although it is dark in the valley. Thanks for looking and for comments as well.
  7. I was recently in the United States and made this 4 image stitched pano of Rockfish Gap in West Central Virginia. To the north lies Skyline drive and to the south, the Blue Ridge Parkway... both very scenic. The gap depicted here was a major path through the mountains to western settlement in the 1700's. Many thanks for looking and comments.
  8. I just got my M9 on Monday and, as a novice to both rangefinders and Leica, well what can I say? You're all extremely fortunate! My lens choice was mostly influenced by the opinion of Steve Huff and Ken Rockwell. So I went for a used 35mm Cron and a new 50 Lux. But I'm surprised now many advise against this on this forum, preferring a 28 alongside a 50 (not that I see anything wrong in this). Me, I'm enjoying the combo immensely: 35 just feels "right" and it's scope allows you to tell a story or convey intimacy - It feels like you're placing the viewer in your shoes. Yes the fifty's focal length is not so different, but IMO it feels completely diverse, as though it's more detached, producing contemplative studies rather than documenting events. In this respect the low-light ability is perfect on the Lux as it allows for those candle lit portraits than merit prolonged scrutiny. I know it's not wise to generalize but this is how I'm using these lenses. I think this is all the glass I'll ever need. Anyone else had the same experience? ... or disagree completely!
  9. Hi, Im a real beginner in the world of rangefinders and Leica but I'm lucky enough to now own a M9 with a 35mm f2 asph and a 50mm f1.4 asph. I'm loving it but I think I have a problem with the 50mm, it is new but after reading some reviews and this forum I think I have a calibration issue? Am I doing anything wrong or does it look like I have to send it off for fixing? The snaps on this quick site show some results first with the 35mm which seem ok with my limited manual focusing experience but then using the same technique the 50mm is way off? Lens detection is set to auto. The glasses in these test pics are about 0.5m apart. http://web.me.com/skinner73 Any advice is appreciated if i'm doing something wrong or even just confirmation that it needs to go to the Leica doctor! Just can't believe kit that costs this much might have to be sent back? Still loving everything about it though, don't worry! Thanks Steve
  10. Hallo Forum! Danke, Frank
  11. Next shot from the streets of Hoi An, this time with artificial light. M9 + 50mm Summilux @ 1250 ISO
  12. 'Artisans d'Angkor' is a workshop in Siem Reap, the city nearby the historical site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The workers there make Khmer art in a traditional way. The artworks are sold to tourists, but not at rip-off prices. It may not seem that way because in comparison to many other workshops these artworks are actually quite expensive. But that is because the workers are given a decent wage, and the materials are of the best quality. The organisation are also socially engaged: they educate and employ those who are having difficulties finding a job, like deaf people. At least, that's what we were told. It's always hard to discern the real socially engaged organizations from the fake ones. You never know for sure. But I guess that's just as true in the Western world, or even more so. And I tend to believe Artisans d'Angkor's story because they were founded with the help of the French government and several NGO's and have plenty of solid references. So, we took a quick tour around the workshop and I shot these pictures with my M9 and 50mm summilux. Thank you for watching. Feel free to comment. And follow my blog if you like these pictures. 13. Shooting people and scenery on Lake Como last Sunday. It was quite windy. Equipment: M9 + 50 lux (asph) on the boat and 35 cron (asph) on land. Thank you for watching.
  14. I've been dreaming of owning a Leica M for many years, and when the M9 was announced I thought it might finally be time. But the M9 and couple of lenses is going to cost way more than I can afford. I considered for a while buying an M9 and then getting a couple of Voitlander lenses. Making the package more affordable. But then after consideration I thought perhaps it would be best to spend my money on some mint 'used' Leica glass (28mm Cron and 50mm 1.4 Lux ASHP) and then maybe purchase a used / demo / new M8 (I'm looking at a 'shop handled' M8 for $US3200). The idea being I would have quality glass that will suit any upgrades to further M bodies in the future. But I have read so many contrasting reviews and user experiences of the M8. The negatives seem to all focus on unusable 'noise' at ISO 1250 and above. Auto White Balance (has firmware upgrades fixed this?), cameras not working for many reasons (seems to be 'first batches' that seem to fall into this category). Anyway, it's just been interesting reading all the gushy reviews of the M9 where alot of M8 hate seems to come out. You know the drill "problems finally fixed, here there and everywhere etc...." Anyway I'll stop raving, but I would love to hear anyones thoughts on the M8 and my questions. Are people still happy with their M8's. Is it really the digital v1.0 that needed to go to v2.0 (M9) to finally get the digital M right. thanks for your time, g http://www.GlendynIvin.com
