  1. nice to know they're developing new film cameras
  2. In a recent interview in Austrian Der Standard Peter Karbe was asked which camera and lens would be his preferred choice. The answer was "not an easy one", but it would be M11 and APO-Summicron 35. "STANDARD: One last question: If you had to choose a combo, what would be your camera and your lens of choice? Karbe: The M11 and APO-Summicron 35mm. But that's one of those questions... which of your children do you like best? If I had to choose, I would use this combination." Here is the link to the full (unlocked) Peter Karbe Der Standard interview (in German) by Mickey Manakas, where he speaks about the compromise in building the Noctilux f/0.95 and its evident flaws, the "Leica Look" myth, his views on smartphone photography, his pride in personally calculating the optical formula for Summilux 50 ASPH and many other cool topics: https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000144541043/leitender-optikexperte-bei-leica-wir-waren-vorreiter-bei-der-digitalisierung

  6. Motivations After purely shooting on digital for 5 months, I shift a bit back to film because my dad has the passion to develop and scan film after his retirement (He now develops C41, ECN-2 and E-6!). Also I bought a CLA’d silver M4 recently and now I enjoy it more than my black M10-P. I mainly use the 35mm or 40mm focal lengths. I have a LLL 35/2 8E replica and the Minolta 40/2. Both of them are excellent on digital and film. As I mainly shoot with digital before, the F2 is enough to cover my needs in indoor and streets at night. Now with film, I’d like to push 5207 or 5219 to 800 to maintain my ability to do street photography in city night. I am confident to zone focus at F2.8 now but at night even at F2 I have to use slower shutter speeds than 1/125, which is hard to freeze the motions. I am considering to try a F1.4 lens. My thoughts about the F1.4 35mm lenses… Summilux-es are too much for my wallet to afford currently. I know the FLE and ASPH luxes are great lenses in IQ but they are also much bulkier than the F2-crons IMO. The compactness is an important consideration for me. The Nokton 35/1.4 is a famous lens—for its budget friendliness and the debate over its IQ and focus shift issues, I guess? And its focus shift make it a less proper lens on the digital sensor. But if I pair it with my M4 it would be fine right? The next doubt is the build quality of this lens. I’m afraid buying a brand new one and find it does not focus properly…and I am totally fine with a pre-owned one if it has been proven to have no issues about focusing.
  8. I like walking around the corner and surprised how beautiful these muddy places can be especially after rainy weather when colours are so much more deeper and attractive
  9. Hello, I’m sure this topic has been discussed in the past, but I haven’t found it per se in the forum: if present, could you point me to it? Anyway, I am looking at acquiring a Leica 35mm lens to go with my 50mm Summilux from 1988 (is that ver. 2?). Image quality is great with most lenses from Leica, it’s the character that changes, and I could be as happy with a modern as with a classic look - although keeping a similar character to the Mandler era Summilux could be a plus. I’m not worried about maximum speed, but I was hoping to be at least at Summicron speed. My main concern is not to have to battle too much with focus shift, because I want to use the full range of aperture values, but also shoot wide open for available light. That means that a Summarit would be a bit of a compromise for speed. Keep in mind that I can’t afford anything close to the Summilux FLE pricewise, my budget doesn’t stretch that much at all. Any advice? Thanks in advance!!
  10. I heard a rumor in January that Leica was making a 35mm Noctilux lens. Was curious if anyone had heard anything more about this? Although I’m happy with my 35mm Summicron I think a Noctilux would be super cool to add to my bag. The size of it would be my only concern, as the bigger lenses aren’t appealing to me.
  11. Hi Guys! So my birthday is nearly coming and I finally have the courage to buy my very first Leica camera. I’m choosing between the M10 and the M10-P. Can you help me narrowing down what to get. I’m a huge 35mm fuji shooter so I’m having a hard time choosing between the lux and cron. And is it true that Hong Kong sells cheaper Leica’s? Please help me! I need help badly! Thank you

  13. SOS HELP!!! I dropped my Leica M4 and according to the NYC Camera Doctor repair team, the prism that creates the ghost image in the rangefinder is dislocated and needs to be replaced. They suggested that I send it directly into Leica for repairs, becuase the rangefinder is a complicated mechanism they wern't equipt to fix. They also let me know that Leica, located in New Jersey, dosen't do specific repairs and will want to do a full tune-up. Money is a concern, and I'm not prepared to pay $1000-ish if I can at all avoid it. I just want my range-finder to be functional. Has anyone had rangefinder work done, espeically on an M4? Would you advise having this work done by Leica or an outside repair person, such as DAG? Any experience or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. E

  16. Finally "Fujifilm Co., Ltd. announced on June 10 the development of the black-and-white film Neopan 100 ACROS II. It plans to release 35mm size and 120 size in the fall of 2019. The sale price is undecided. Sensitivity ISO 100 black and white film. The company ended black-and-white film sales in the autumn of 2018 due to reduced demand and the difficulty of obtaining raw materials, but after receiving strong demand for continued sales mainly from enthusiasts and young people of the SNS generation, It is said that they have been studying for the reopening. The company developed Acros II by researching substitutes for raw materials that became difficult to obtain and reviewing the manufacturing process to match the new raw materials. Compared with the conventional product "Neopan 100 ACROS", the gradation of the highlight part is designed to be sharp and it is possible to reproduce three-dimensional gradation. In addition, the world's highest level of graininess is realized with the unique "Super Fine-Σ particle technology" (a technology that can control the size and composition of silver particles and improve the print quality of images), emphasizing the contour of the subject with high sharpness" https://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/1189352.html
  17. Hi to everyone here, I currently owned M6 and MP (type 240) by nature, i usually like shooting at 35 mm focal length. I am aiming to upgrade my summicron asph to a summilux which 35mm summilux lens will be the ‘one lens’that would fit with my two camera bodies?(digital and film) I will be studying abroad( in edinburgh), so i would like to hear thoughts and comments from fellow experienced users in this forum. Thank you
  18. I am purchasing my first Leica! The M10-p. I was wondering which lens should I go with (current version brand new), the 35mm Summilux or 35mm Summicron. I do not consider the $ what so ever. Why go with one over the other? Is the Summilux strictly better but a matter of $$? Mostly street & reportage-style photography
  19. hi all! I have 35 and 75, both lux. but some times I would like to get picture quality as at my 35 lux. 75 bit different. looking at 90/2.8, 90/2, 90/2AA... I shoot landscapes, portraits. not sure but maybe 180/2.8 or 180/2.8 APO as I also wanted something longer than short tele. use these at typ 240 and Sony a7II. any ideas?
  20. Hi all, As the title says, has anyone used a 35mm lens on an IIIG without a separate viewfinder? Is it possible? I have read in two places vague comments about it being possible using the edges of the cameras VF without needing a dedicated 35mm VF. Both times, there were no responses to those specific comments so... Has anyone tried it?
  21. Hey guys! I spent 6 weeks in NYC basically just taking pictures ... mostly street, but also Landscape and People ... I mostly used my M9 and 35mm Summilux ASPH (pre FLE) wide open and sometimes my S (006) and 70mm Summarit. If I don't comment which combo I used, it'll be the M9 35Lux combo... Feel free to comment and critique I'm not a pro and I just do stuff the way I like it .. so not everything is perfect... Here are a couple of shots from the End of July .. some of the best sunsets I have ever seen.
  22. Zabriskie Point is one of Death Valley's most famous spots; here's Manley Beacon's ridge just after sunrise under a stormy sky. With the Leica M-P (Typ 240) and the 35mm Summilux FLE. Best, Vieri
  23. After digitizing for quite a while all my 35 mm negatives via photographing them with 1:1 macro lens, tripod, and LED light table, I decided now to get the plustek 8200i Ai scanner with SilverFast 8 software. Main reason for it was correct color calibration of color negatives. To do the color calibration manually in PS or LR is not always easy. Posting here to hear from others who use a plustek scanner with SilverFast software. So far I am very impressed by the scanner and the software. I updated to the SilverFast 8.8 version which has a lot of options - tricky part is to figure out what is mainly needed for a good color calibration of a scan and what is more optional. I prefer to use the internal settings for films to choose from - the color calibration of the scanned color negative appears fairly correct afterwards that only minimal adjustment is needed. I also like the infrared dust scan and automatic subtraction from the photo - it works really well and leaves other image parts intact. One thing I struggle with is the archive mode of the negative - the only option to save the file in RAW as DNG. I didn't find yet a way to get an automated color calibration after the negative was scanned with the archive mode. I would prefer to have the scan saved as DNG but would like to have it processed like it is offered for all the other image file modes as JPG, TIFF etc. Is there a way to do this easily? What is your best / most proficient workflow using plustek scanners and this software? Did you encounter any drawbacks?
  24. Hello my fellow Leica shooters..... I am looking for advice from the peanut gallery on a lens purchase. In short, I am going to be spending three weeks traveling Thailand soon, and need to travel light, so I'll be carrying my M240 during the trip. At one point in the trip, I will also be taking a 4 day kayak trip and will be doing a bit of shooting from the kayak. I have two options: 1) Buy a used version of the 28-35-50 Tri-Elmer MATE lens - which I've never used before. I've read extensively about it, but dont have hands-on with the lens. 2) Take my existing 50mm Summicron and 21mm lenses and buy a 35mm Summicron and carry a set of three lenses. Each of these options has pros and cons - the only neutral is the price, with the MATE being just a tad cheaper. Obviously option #1 means I don't have to deal with lens changes, but I'm limited to f/4 for nighttime and low-light shooting. Anyone been to Thailand have experience with the night scenes in cities like Bangkok - will I be handicapped with an f/4 lens? Option 2 has the benefit of being f/2 lenses and each lens is smaller than the MATE, but I'd have to conduct lens changes more often. I welcome any thoughts - I realize this is a personal opinion and decision, but am curious what you'd do in the situation? Thanks Kristen
  25. In 2009 I bought my first Leica (M8.2 and an Elmarit 28mm lens) - today I placed my second order after 8 years, (M10 + Summilux 35) and I will have to trade in my trusted M8.2 and Elmarit 28 lens. I was very hesitant to keep the Elmarit 28 and maybe add to it a 50 Summilux, or sell and get a 28 Summilux + 90 Summicron, blah, blah, blah. Then I realised, if I was able to publish a book, have multiple exhibitions and take tens of thousands of pictures with my 1 body + 1 lens, actually I don't need anything else, just the continuation of my current trusted minimalistic setup: M10 and Summilux 35mm. That's all. No fuss, no pain. Don't need to carry and change lenses, no bag, no nothing. For backup, I have my iPhone. I feel great, didn't get the GAS syndrome! Well, actually the opposite: GSS! (Gear Selling Syndrome). As I wanted to to finance my new gear I had to sell all my Canon gear - which I rarely used in the last few years (7DMkII, 6D, Sigma ART 35mm f/1.4, Canon EF 85mm f/1.8, Canon EF-S 17-55 IS USM) plus I will trade in my Leica 8.2 + Elmarit Lens + I need to pay some cash as well... Looking at the list of gear to be exchanged "only" for an M10 + Summilux 35, feels scary and risky. But I know that I made the right choice, I will continue to stay creative as I was with my previous gear. (By the way, I placed my order in Vienna, Austria at Leicashop, with their trusted owner, Hannes Wahry - a brilliant person!) I just wanted to share my story. Happy shooting!
