  1. Greetings, I am doing some research on buying a used M. I am not a pro, just a devotee since my father used them, and I can now afford it. I have 3 main questions surrounding purchasing a used Leica and I am thinking about buying a M-P (Typ 240). 1. Do reputable photo houses refurbish the camera's or send them to Leica for a certified-used designation? 2. Are there more reputable stories to purchase from? I am dubious about eBay. What about B&H in New York, Tamarkin seems overpriced with little inventory. Can anyone make recommendations? 3. What should I look for. Someone told at a photo store that Leica cannot provide the number of actuations. Is that right? I basically don't want to spend >$4000 on a something that has 100, 000 miles on it, so to speak. Thank you all for your feedback.
  2. I am considering an Eve Ready case for my M240. I use a 90mm Elmarit. Which Case fits? Will the large front case fit? What is your experience with an ever Ready Case in general ??
  3. I wanted to related a good experience I've had with Leica service. My M(240) developed a problem: a vertical line of fully-exposed pixels that started to appear occasionally, then grew more common until, a bit before Christmas, it reached the point where it was in pretty much every image. When these first started to appear I emailed repairs@leicacamerausa - back in about September. No reply. Sent several follow-up messages, no reply. This seemed consistent with postings I've seen here and elsewhere about that email address being a black hole. Once the problem became serious, I decided to try again. Also I had a hypothesis: given that it's not generally good business practice to ignore customers' email, maybe my messages weren't getting through. My usual email uses a somewhat unusual email configuration, and maybe the odd routing was setting off an over-cautious spam filter. So, I sent another message direct from a simple and widely-used web-based email service (icloud.com). I received a reply the next day. This doesn't confirm my theory about the spam filter, of course. Maybe they have just had a change of staff or a change of priorities. In any case, I had a conversation with a very helpful person at NJ Leica, which ended up with them starting a repair file for me. They emailed me paperwork to print which allowed me to drop in to a local UPS Store and ship the camera to them, no shipping charge for me. About 6 weeks later (with Christmas in there, so probably 4-5 actual work weeks) I received a written estimate in the snail mail, and had to reply in writing authorizing the repair. Did so (by snail mail but also by fax, in case that would allow them to start sooner). About 4 weeks after that, the camera arrived back home. Again, UPS shipping at their expense, and with the proper paperwork so that I didn't have to pay customs fees on having it re-enter Canada. $250 to repair (remap and recalibrate) the faulty sensor, plus a general inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and sensor cleaning all included, and $0 shipping. I'm really pleased with this service, and my M is like-new again. Yay. - Richard

  5. Hey everyone. Normally I shoot raw and post process in lightroom. Occasionally I shoot raw+jpeg with vivid color. Sometimes the results with Vivid are spectacular. But most of the time the images come out far darker than what the lcd suggests. On top of that, when viewing the images in lightroom the blacks area almost always crushed. I love the color it produces, but not crazy about the contrast it introduces in the process. A. I wish you had the ability to set the intensity of the effect in the menu (maybe something in the m10?) and B. Does anyone have any lightroom presets that come close to the vivid color settings? I've tried many times to get my raw files to look close to the vivid but with no luck Thanks!
  7. Hello all A few months back I finally fulfilled my dream and got myself the M 240. The digital Leica M body I always have wanted. So far it's been stunning experience and I love shooting with it. M 240 and SEM 21 are particularly a special combo together. What the M has brought me for the first time I truly enjoy shooting street photography. However, I have always enjoyed landscape shooting the most. I was aware of the drawbacks of M 240 when I purchased it. If you don't know what I am talking about I mean the following problems: - One minute maximum exposure = It's a disgrace to even call it bulb mode - No way to turn off LENR (Long exposure noise reduction) = practical disadvantage: try shooting fireworks when the guy next to you is going to get twice as many shots as you are - Long exposure with high ISO is even more limited = astrophotography is impossible - Inability to move the focus point on live view when zoomed in I am aware there are plenty of discussion about the aforementioned issues on these forums. As we all know anyone who is serious about landscape shooting these issues render the M almost useless. Which is in so many ways so sad. We are talking about a 6000 € camera, we have the best ultra wide lens ever (SEM 21) - and yet it can't be used to it's full potential because of these limitations. This makes me just sad. For me this is frustrating beyond all ways to describe it. To have the digital M body you always wanted, yet you are limited by such limitations. Right now I have three options: 1) Pray and hope Leica would release a firmware update to fix the issues (or perhaps a firmware hack could enable this? 2) Forget all kind of long exposure shooting with the M. 3) Get a second body for landscape shooting. Right now for me the only option would be the Sony A7r. Which I already owned once. Sad news at the time the performance with certain M wides was not acceptable. The good news now is by modifying the camera it appears we can get good performance even with SEM 21 (source: Diglloyd.com). Now I most certainly would not want to choose option number 2). So what I want to know is there a way we can reach Leica directly and get answers about these issues? Has Leica ever explained the reasoning to disable long exposures on the CMOSIS sensor? I simply can't believe an overheating would be a problem. If yes, how come no other camera manufacturer doesn't have the same problem? My guess is they want landscape shooters to invest into S-system. Or perhaps Leica's vision is perfection: hot pixels are not tolared. I say this because even the Leica T has the same technical limitation. And we all know the T has a Sony sensor which is perfectly capable for long exposures without any issues, yes again Leica has not allowed it. What ever the real reason for this is I find it ridiculous. Every DSLR I ever had (since Canon EOS 300D) has had a bulb mode. Hot pixels have never been a problem. And if they are turning LENR on removes the problem. I realize the game is probably lost by now for the M 240 and Leica is already probably working on the next generation M body. But I just want Leica to be at least aware of these drawbacks. And that the next generation Leica M body would not have such disadvantages for those who enjoy landscaping with Leica glass the most. M9 is not an option for me, because I think live view is a mandatory property for a landscape shooter. And I don't think I would be satisfied even with the 240 seconds. Any comments? Thank you for reading this... P.S. I am aware some folks seem to be bit over defensive when it comes to criticizing Leica M bodies here, but I truly believe these issues are serious drawbacks for each and everyone of us. And only together we have a chance to get answers from Leica. I certainly am hoping that a future firmware update is possible to fix some of these issues.

I watched this lady walking down this street and stop to read the public notices. I learned from an italian friend they were local death notices that she was reading.

  10. Hi there, I don’t think this is an issue with my Leica M, but given its new to me, I thought I would post incase anyone has seen such an issue that did turn out to be camera related... On importing images to Lightroom from the sd card (compressed dng) I’ll see a couple of corrupt images (previews - from embedded preview image) in the library module. If I flip to the developer module, the raw file is perfectly fine. If I regenerate the preview, the corruption goes away. One would think it points to the camera saving a corrupt preview images with the dng, which is resolved on a preview regeneration in Lightroom. The weird thing is if I do the same import to another computer... no corrupt previews. So that would point to an issue with the computer, but I only see this from the Leica shot images. 2 imports of a couple of hundred images each time usually results in 1- 2 corrupted images as described above. One thing worth noting is that I’m pretty sure the corrupt images where shot in continuous mode and shot at the point of a full buffer. Very weird and easily remedied by generating the previews. Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers Jonathan
  11. Are there any filmmakers who have used the M240 to shoot video? I am especially interested in your experiences with audio. Any solutions to getting high quality audio while shooting Leica's HD video, that's what I'm beginning to think about. And other other filmmaker experiences of note with the 240. Just wondering...

  14. I love this setup and it's amazing. I want to test it how difficult is to take video with F1.0. It really makes whole video has different feeling to it. How do you think the outcome from Leica M ? Here is the link for video: Leica M with 50mm F1.0 lens cinema testing video on Vimeo Enjoy it. !!
  15. Hallo, ich habe bei meiner Leica M Bereitschaftstasche die Schraubenmutter verloren (hält den Zapfen, der unten in die Halbschale geht). Weiß zufällig jemand, wo ich bekomme ich sowas wieder bekomme? Danke!
  16. Yes, Im afraid so. Please feel free to protest and ridicule . To conclude Im happy to say that the limiting factor still remains myself! These are my subjective considerations where I might disagre with previous observations: 1) M is considerable easier to focus than M9? No, Imo no difference with any of my lenses from 16 to 135mm. Just as easy and the best MF awailable. 2) Mechanics of switches. The power on button is far to loose. During first week I drained the battery twice from accidentally turning on M. The A/shutter speed dial switch also have to little fricton. 3) Reability. Well, so far so good, no hangups. But the auto power- off is not working ? If I l:confused:eave it on "S", the battery is drained overnight (no EVF, no LV, auto power-off at max time 10min) 4) Adjustment of A compensation? I really wish for a firmware where the "m" button can be programmable Even after weeks I struggle with finding the front button for A compensation. Btw; havent found any practical use of the "m" button. Must be something without use for photography ;-) 5) Order RRS tripod mount base? Difficult one. I will continue to use in SA mount without quick release sice the dimmensions of the bottom of M (as the M9) fits, but witout the grooves securing it. 6) Colours and IQ (versus M9)? A bit work to adapt to the M in workflow, and Im not yet satisfied with my treatment in LR. Somehow I cant seem to get the "glow" and "crispness" of the M9. The dynamics are better, so burnout from the low Nordic sun (cyan sky and so on) is less of a problem. Resolution seems in practical terms similar, but I havent made any large prints. 7) Other handling.? Surprisingly easy to work with M and M9 side by side. But the M feels much heavier and slippery in hand than the M9 with Thumbie. I started with the M on a one week fishing trip on the Kola tundra. Quite tough conditions, but the M didnt complain.
