  1. I'm looking to trade up my 35mm Summicron ASPH to a Summilux for my M6. I shoot only film and so I've been craving a slightly faster lens that'll go well with slow film. After some research, I'm torn between all the different types of Summilux's: - Pre-ASPH/Classic (cheaper, prone to flare, prone to focus shift, softer on the edges, and has the classic Leica glow/rendition) - Aspherical (super expensive, a non-option for me) - ASPH (a little cheaper than the FLE, still prone to focus shift, sharper than the Pre-ASPH, still has the classic Leica glow/rendition - not as much as Pre-ASPH though) - ASPH FLE (expensive, no focus shift, really sharp, lots of contrast, more modern Leica look) I'm leaning towards the ASPH and ASPH FLE, and the only reason why I'm leaning towards the ASPH FLE was that the focus shift is mostly eliminated with the floating lens element. However, I kind of like the classic Leica look that the regular ASPH has. I've also read places that focus shift is less prominent in film cameras. Is that really true? Should I just spring for the FLE version?

  5. I have a real-world hands on review of the new Leica Summilux-TL 35mm f/1.4 with some samples. Let me know what you think! https://fstoppers.com/originals/hands-new-leica-summilux-tl-35mm-f14-lens-121465
  6. I've read one long thread and a few mentions of this phenomenon here on this forum. I'm curious of todays status regarding the rattle issue with this lens. I recently bought a mint in box 35 Lux FLE second hand, the lens is perfect in every way except that it sounds like a rhythm instrument. Mine is a 416xxxx meaning its 2012 produced. It has no back/front focus, It's super sharp wide open at f/1.4 and the focus ring is smooth and nice. The aperture ring is perhaps a little loose, but not bothersome, and about the same as my 50 lux. The sound is only apparent when the lens is moved up and down, not side to side (front element facing upwards) and is surprisingly loud, so loud that if I'm indoors in a silent room i hear it on my hip as i'm walking out. As soon as the ambient noise rise it drowns though. Meaning, it doesn't bother me that much. After researching the matter i understand that Leica has stated that this is normal and that it's the aperture cage that rattles and that this is a part of the design assuring that the lens will function optimally. I also read that different copies are affected differently, some pretty much silent, some rattles with different volume, and some vary depending on f-stop (mine quiets down a little at f/16) Now, in 2016, how many current owners of the Summilux 35 FLE is affected by this? I'm also curious if anyone reading this thread have purchased a new-in-box lens that do/don't rattle. I'm also interested in hearing from members that had the lens CLA'ed with this issue. I heard that Leica can use some shims or similar to mute the rattle if requested.

  9. Hi Guys, Am fairly new to Leica (6 months in) and I would like to seek your advice on which 35mm lens to get. I currently use a M240 body with a 60mm F1.2 Konica Hexanon and a 50mm Summicron APO. I am looking to add a 35mm lens to compliment my existing collection (and will be looking at add a 28mm Elmarit when the new one releases end of the month). I am considering the follow: 35 Summilux Pre-ASPH 35 Summicron Pre-ASPH Version 1 35 Summicron Pre-ASPH Version 4 35 Summicron ASPH (2016 edition) After doing some extensive research, I feel like the 3 Pre-ASPH lens may be a better compliment as it is softer / has more of a leica glow (since my 50mm APO and the 28mm Elmarit are both bitingly sharp)? I was originally going to just get a 28 and 50 and NOT the 35 since it seems to be too close to the other 2 focal lengths, so I am now thinking maybe getting something with more of a unique characteristic). Just wondering what all your thoughts are and why you think so? Your kind assistance is very much appreciated. Thank you. Best Regards, J

  19. Hello, I was shooting the other day, and noticed when i tried to focus on some towers (miles away from Brooklyn) on my M240/50 Lux ASPH at infinity the double images are ever so slightly off. even the focus peaking was not on the spot. When i tried with another lens, the double image were ok ! so i believe the lens need to be readjusted for infinity ? if so should i sent to leica or there are other reputable place in the US that can do it quicker...? Thanks for your help ! Best Vadim
  20. I am considering buying a 35 Summilux preasph but have been considering also the 35 Nokton 1.4 from Voigtlander as it comes at a fraction of the price. My main question is whether the Nokton also has that same magic glow at f1.4 as the Summilux preasph. Anyone?
  21. I just purchased a used Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH from the NYC Leica Store. I got it for a really good deal, basically $1000 off. For some reason it seems to be a bit greasy. Also the glass looked like it had a smudge and I used my lens pen to clean it. It then greased up the front element. What should I do? Return, or just clean? If clean what do you guys recommend.
  22. Hi folks... just wanted to open up a thread to hear your experience with these 3 lenses - on the issue of focus shit: Noctilux - I have struggled between getting a f0.95 and f1v4 and decided to go for the latter... however i tried 2 copies of the v4 and both have focus shift problems at MFD (i shot a lot of pictures at 0.7m-2m range) and I returned them... a few leica hobbyist nearby told me that this is a common problem with the f1v4 (and f0.95 as well!!!) - one of them claimed that he has personally played around with 6-7 copies of f1v4 and ALL have focus shift problems... so just wanna to hear your thoughts and experience on this? or maybe it's me who's being too picky??? Summilux 50mm E43 - similar problem... tried 2 copies and have the same focus shift issue... this old lens is great, gives amazing colors and rendering... but again, is the focus shift issue universal with this lens? Summilux 75mm - I have never tried this lens but this is definitely going into my shopping list... but I am already quite beat with my bad experience on focus shift with the Noct and E43 so just wondering if this lens would have the same problem, or should I just simply accept it? Thanks a lot in advance...
  23. Hello people, I am a newbie, both to this forum and leica, so please forgive me if i ask stupid or outdated questions... so basically i'm trying to decide on a 21mm lens... i've heard people saying that you buy the Lux for the large aperture for low light and creative shooting and you buy the SEM for higher quality landscape photography.... but still wanna hear from your experience, is it correct to say that 21/3.4 produces better IQ than 21/1.4 throughout? i.e. only real shortfall of 21/3.4 is the small aperture?? Or, if you stop down 21/1.4 to f3.4 and smaller the IQ is comparable or same as 21/3.4? and would the discontinued 21/2.8 ASPH be a good compromise in aperture size and IQ??? Not considering other factors such as price, size/weight, non-Leica lenses... Thank you all in advance....
