  1. So a couple months ago I got my first ever Leica! Its an M6 classic, 1992 build, in nearly mint condition, and I got it for a good price I've now gone through about 6 or 7 rolls in it, and its been a whole lot of fun for me. Completely different from what I'm used to, which sort of brings me to my question, sort of. I've been shooting with a Canon EOS 50D for a few years and prior to that a Nikon consumer-level DSLR. I'm young, and really got seriously into photography as a hobby long after film had been replaced as the norm. I feel like spending time with film has begun to and will teach me a lot which can better me as a photographer. For example developing your eye so that you are really looking for what is important, learning more about the process for how photographs actually happen, etc. These sort of existential qualities that you get through using and developing film. My enormous Canon and I have been through a lot together, and I've done some pretty good things with it. The extreme "practical" aspects of using a digital SLR camera make it hard for me to take my M6 seriously as a professional tool. Before you gasp and stop reading hear me out here. My Canon is not all that valuable, and certainly not uncommon. To most people it looks like any old "nice camera" and I've never felt like it would be cause for someone to come up behind me at night with a knife. I don't have to load it, it doesn't "fog" at airport security, and when I get home, my pictures are ready for sorting and processing as soon as I am. These are all matters of convenience and as a camera I don't like it as much. It is big, clunky, heavy, loud, intrusive, laggy, etc. I once said I felt like I was walking around with a brick strapped to my neck and a mask over my face whilst clapping. Manual focusing it is difficult and inaccurate. I tend to spend lots of time "chimping", and I'm always frustrated by the sheer volume of "trash" photos I come back with at the end of a trip. I guess the point I'm trying to make is this. Later in the summer I'm planning a trip, maybe to Germany, but I'm not sure yet, my friend and I haven't fully decided yet. I'm trying to convince myself to leave the Canon, lenses, CF cards, etc. at home and take the Leica and some rolls of film. Sounds great, except I can't seem to shake this voice inside my head that says: "you're not actually going to take that as your only camera are you?" "you know its just going to get stolen." "your film is not going to stand up to 2014, USA-bound airport security and even if it does you're just going to screw it up in the darkroom when you get back." "something is going to go wrong and you'll be sorry." etc. I can't tell if these are stupid concerns or not. So what better place to ask for opinions than from a bunch of people who own exactly the same/similar camera right? Do you ever have these thoughts? What is your point of view/justification? discuss
  2. I'm about to start a project where i will use my Leica gear (M6 and a 35 mm ASPH Summicron) extensively each and every day under different circumstances and changing weather conditions for a half year or so. I'm not anal about my equipment since it's been bought to use. I just want to protect it in the best way, since it's gonna be exposed to heavy use. I'm gonna try to minimize the use in heavy rain and snow. The one thing, i'm most concerned about is how it's gonna react and cope with changing weather conditions, changing humidity and changing temperature, which i imagine could result in condensation. How can i protect it from condensation, on days where it's travelling in and out, from - let's say - minus 5 or plus 10 degrees Celsius, with a humidity over 80%, and inside to plus 20 degrees Celsius, and the other way around several times each day? Yes, it's gonna be protected in a bag under the most severe conditions, but my concern is condensation, as a result from changing temperatures and changing humidity.
Gruss Markus
  4. I do commercial photography as a huge part of my day job, but I have a Canon EOS 1Dx for that. However I do, for my personal use, much prefer my M6 due to the size and the quality of the glass. I have a decent assortment of M glass, all with UV/IR cut filters on them. I would like to switch to a digital M as work has me traveling quite a bit going forward and I am honestly done with the extra handling that film requires. I don't know if anyone else has done this, or if I am over reaching by wanting to swap for an M8.2 body. If any of you have any thoughts, or tips, that you'd like to share with me I am all ears.
  5. On March 20'th i will be in a country where Total Solar Eclipse will occur for two minutes, where it will be "peaking" at 9:41 AM local time. I think i already now know the scenery/landscape where i will be, but i'm wondering how to protect the camera from damage, since i did read somewhere that you should be very careful and not stare at the sun. This leads me to think, if the sun is so strong, that it can damage my eyes the two minutes - the lengt of the total solar eclipse - could it also damage my camera as well? I will most likely be on a mountain, some 20 meters above a flat surface where 600-800 people will gater for the eclipse. All the people will be in the front of the image, with the sun above them, and some mountains surrounding all the scenery. My M6 will be on a tripod with a Summicron 35 ASPH and i will try to shoot two rolls during the two minutes. 1. Should i protect my camera from the direct sunlight? If yes, how? [Corrected: Should i avoid having the sun directly in my frame?] 2. Do you have any suggested settings, i maybe should prefer? 3. Which film would you prefer? Maybe some strange questions, but since a total solar eclipse is also strange for me, it explains my questions

... Testaufnahmen folgen.

    Girl with a phone

Like other kids her age, Mifu spends much time with her mother's cell phone. She also reads a good deal, which is the saving grace.
  10. I already posted some of these in the Film and Mountains thread but I figured they might be worthy of an own thread. Taken on Portra 160 with a Leica M6 + 35mm Summicron IV

This young nephew is studying to be a lawyer. It was an overcast evening and I just managed this with an Elmarit 90 wide open at 1/30 sec. on ASA 200 film.

  14. Any suggestion for a flash with a swivel head? I need some input. thanks Armando armandosalazar.weebly.com
  16. Hey everyone I am a student on a limited budget. I currently have a classic m6 with a 50 f/2 and a 28 f/2.8. However I have been really wanting to get a hold of a digital m to shoot with. With this in mind Ive been saving for about a year and a quarter and have come up with 2000.00 and have really been shopping around, catch is I leave in a week for a trip to Ireland and initially wanted to find a digital m to shoot with. Ive found two locally that are being sold by the owner for 2100 and 2250, but one has had its shutter replaced, and the other is heavily used. I have 3 options, I can just take my m6 and shoot with that and wait to save more for a 8.2 or a nicer 8, purchase one of these m8's and take it on the trip, or possibly find a demo or rent a m9 to take on the trip save my money and buy a better 8 or a 8.2 I know this seems like a very personal decision, but I was really hoping that with everyones experiences you guys would be able to help me make the best possible choice. -James
Vielen Dank Ludwig
  18. Hi all, just got my M6 classic not long ago. I have a problem when I point my M6 to something very bright, let's say while I am shooting a bright scene under sunny day, I barely can see the "red arrow" light meter indicator. Shooting indoor I have no problem, as the ambient is dimmer and thus the viewfinder also darker. Is this normal? Or the battery is dying? I shot 3 rolls so far, all came out exposed accurately, no sign of meter battery dying...
  19. I was taking pictures in an old district of Changsha China, which will be demolished by the city Government for building new high-rise buildings soon. I met this lovely old lady who told me a lot of stories about this old district which existed for more than 130 years. She once asked me if there is anyone living in the sky since people can fly now. An adorable old lady. Taken by Leica M6 with 35mm summicron (6 ele) on Fuji RVP.
  20. Hi, I'm new on this forum and wanted to know how much it could cost to change the top plate of my M6 (because of scratches on it)? In fact, I want to know if it's worth doing it.
  21. I need a little help here, I inherited my fathers Pentak and Leica camera - M8 (used) and M6 (never used) with lenses and accessories. I am thinking of keeping one of the cameras to take pictures of my kids, ie. Sports, vacations and general pictures. My limited experience with cameras are my Iphone 4 and $100 Nikon, Kodak, and Sony pocket cameras. What would make the best camera for my needs and abilities - please consider I am willing to learn how to use the camera! Any help would be appreciated. 22.
  23. Hi Im thinking of buying a visoflex to use on my M6 and M8 , i have seen two a Visoflex 11a and a Visoflex 3 , i know i will need some adaptors to use with my 90mm and 135mm lens units. What is the difference between the two , also will i need an adaptor to use my 50mm 35mm lens on one Many thanks Ian
  24. Hello, I just bought a used Leica M6 in pristine condition. With it, I have Summicron-M 50mm and the Elmar 135mm F4. The Cron 50 works perfectly, but I can't get the rangefinder focus to work for the Elmar. I know the focus area is pretty tight with a 0.72x viewfinder, but the focus images don't budge when turning the focus dial. I'm probably overlooking something simple, but please let me know if you have any thoughts. Thanks so much.
  25. Hi All, I'm embarrassed to say that I have a Leica M6 with a 35mm aspeherical lens that I've used less than 10 times! I bought it about 10 years ago. It's in perfect condition and I'm thinking of selling it on eBay. Before I do, I want to get it inspected and certified that it's in perfect working order. Do you have any suggestions on how much this would cost? Also, where would be the best place to have this done? Leica USA Headquarters? Thanks in advance for your help. Reading this forum makes me want to keep the camera and start using it! If I decide to keep it, I still want to have it inspected.
