Jamie Roberts Posted February 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I had to walk the dog tonight, even though we're in the middle of another snowstorm here (some ice as well). I just bought a 28 cron so I thought I'd try it out at high ISOs... Advertisement Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Hi Jamie Roberts, Take a look here Snowstorm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
psquared Posted February 7, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2008 Jamie, A wonderful scene with a great tonal range. Nicely done. Yes, there is some chroma noise at this high ISO, but at this resolution, it's not bothersome at all. Peter
Jamie Roberts Posted February 7, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted February 7, 2008 Thanks Peter... actually I was surprised how well the colour noise cleans up in C1 V4, even once I've sharpened for print. Of course, this is essentially monochromatic. But it's almost like I've gained an ISO setting. Normally, I would only use 1250 for monochrome and not use 2500 at all... but now it seems that 2500 is giving me fine monochromatic files and 1250 is doing well with colour... Again, this is from C1. I've actually had some bad experiences lately in ACR, but I don't know why...anyway, I was pleased with the 28 cron wide open too And it was snowing like mad when I took this! Here's a 100% crop if anyone is interested (unsharpened). To me, it looks a fair bit like scanned high-ISO film (well, on my scanner, anyway!):
stuny Posted February 7, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2008 Jamie - Superb in composition, light, detail and mood.
garyp Posted February 7, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2008 Very nice Jamie! How did you meter this one? TIA
roguewave Posted February 7, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 7, 2008 Jamie, beautiful capture. I actually like the "grain" the noise emits, as it adds some atmospherics to the setting. I'm sure glad you're getting this weather & not me. Global warming has blessed the denizens of NYC with a an all time record high temp of 68 F on 2/6/2008. That's almost twice the normal temperature. Jamie Roberts Posted February 7, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted February 7, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) @Stuart--thanks! I thought it captured the mood of the night nicely @ Gary--I actually overexposed a bit and placed some tree detail as high as I could get it, knowing that the backlight would blow out a bit. So the M8's meter was reading "OK//under by an "arrow" for the tree bark / foreground"). Then I brought it back a bit in C1 to establish the black point. At 100%, you can still see snow detail on the tree in the shadows, but it drops pretty rapidly as the result of added contrast. @ Ben, yes, for high ISO, the grain is not too bad at all, and I might add a wee bit more for printing too. Yeah, it's been a year of storms for us (though it reminds me more of what I remember the weather to be like when I was growing up: cold and snowy! mhoersch Posted February 7, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 7, 2008 Really wonderful shot with eerie (is that the way to spell it?) atmosphere!
Jamie Roberts Posted February 8, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted February 8, 2008 Thanks Manfred. Though its just a streetlight, I found it eerie as well with all the light bouncing around off the snow.
farnz Posted February 9, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 9, 2008 Jamie, A very emotive image - I'm shivering just looking at it! I particularly like the powerful silhouette of the tree. Pete.
carylwithay Posted February 10, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 10, 2008 Beautiful shots. They look like Xmas cards. Caryl
Jamie Roberts Posted February 12, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted February 12, 2008 @ Pete and Caryl--thanks! It's actually colder here now (a lot colder) and we might actually get a little more snow! If I could convince myself to get up earlier, there would be some great shots, but it's just too cold
