Snowstorm

Well, I had to walk the dog tonight, even though we're in the middle of another snowstorm here (some ice as well). I just bought a 28 cron so I thought I'd try it out at high ISOs...

M8 / ISO 2500 / 28 Cron f2.0 latest firmware:

Thanks Peter... actually I was surprised how well the colour noise cleans up in C1 V4, even once I've sharpened for print. Of course, this is essentially monochromatic. But it's almost like I've gained an ISO setting. Normally, I would only use 1250 for monochrome and not use 2500 at all... but now it seems that 2500 is giving me fine monochromatic files and 1250 is doing well with colour...

Again, this is from C1. I've actually had some bad experiences lately in ACR, but I don't know why...anyway, I was pleased with the 28 cron wide open too :) And it was snowing like mad when I took this!

Here's a 100% crop if anyone is interested (unsharpened). To me, it looks a fair bit like scanned high-ISO film (well, on my scanner, anyway!):

Jamie, beautiful capture. I actually like the "grain" the noise emits, as it adds some atmospherics to the setting. I'm sure glad you're getting this weather & not me. Global warming has blessed the denizens of NYC with a an all time record high temp of 68 F on 2/6/2008. That's almost twice the normal temperature.

@Stuart--thanks! I thought it captured the mood of the night nicely :)

@ Gary--I actually overexposed a bit and placed some tree detail as high as I could get it, knowing that the backlight would blow out a bit. So the M8's meter was reading "OK//under by an "arrow" for the tree bark / foreground"). Then I brought it back a bit in C1 to establish the black point. At 100%, you can still see snow detail on the tree in the shadows, but it drops pretty rapidly as the result of added contrast.

@ Ben, yes, for high ISO, the grain is not too bad at all, and I might add a wee bit more for printing too. Yeah, it's been a year of storms for us (though it reminds me more of what I remember the weather to be like when I was growing up: cold and snowy!
