Jamie, I said here few times IMHO the M8 can't support SDHC cards for hardware issues and people said always the opposite.

Leica said on December 19th:

"2.1 Why can’t SDHC-standard memory cards be used in the LEICA M8?

The SDHC standard is an extended type of SD standard. This takes very extensive updating of the camera’s SD driver to accommodate them. Leica is working on such updates and will supply them in future firmware versions."

Ah ok--then you know better than I do (though I heard from Leica reps a year ago they were looking at SD HC support).

But if Leica says they're going to support it in firmware, then I believe them. So far they've been pretty honest about stuff like that.

So: whether it's supported in the next firmware revision is another, separate question.

This update, regarden the SDHC cards, should be coming fast and for free.

Theo

I think the day they'll start to charge for firmware update, is the day of their demise.

I don't think they are that fool (or think _we_ are that fool ;) )

Got it. There is also an M8 upgrade FAQ, where they mention that they cannot separate the sapphire screen from the shutter, as it wouldn't be economical, since the disassembly is time-consuming and expensive and needs to be done for both.

There is also the following list of improvements in the new firmware:

---

* New, significantly improved algorithms for automatic white balance for colour accuracy under nearly all lighting conditions.

* Bugfixes:

a. With some SD cards, scrolling through images would jump back and forth.

b. Reports of wrong exposures for images taken immediately after coming out of stand-by mode.

c. The WATE was not correctly reported in the EXIF.

---

Doesn't seem like much, but I'll take what I can get. I presume there were also other minor issues fixed. I am certain that people will claim improved high ISO :)

The new firmware is out. The AWB is the main change, but scrolling has been improved again. Look for another thread on this topic, where there is a link and more detail:

Let's not start too many threads on the same topics, please. A very bad habit.

The AWB took a lot of resources to get it down correctly.

The AWB looks perfect now, i shot a lot of mixed light situations already, and it nailed it every time, which would be impossible with the previous FW... it took some time but you finally got there, way to go, Leica... :-)
