agencal Posted July 12, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 12, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone I have bouhgt the rleased Macro Elmar. It is a great lens optically but has some ergonomic problems. When lens is used without hood you get som contrast loss so it is better to use it all the time but how.If the lens is attached on camera there is not a lens cap to ise with the hood.So you have to put the combination to your bag without a lens cap which is prone to dust.If you take of the lens and put it to bag again there is not a way to reverse the hood on the lens and use the cap which comes with the lens. There is a cap in the box and you can not use it with hood.So if you wanna use the hood you hav 2 choice. 1.Take the hood of every time when not been used and use the lens cap to protect the lens. But you need to put the hood in another lens compartment in your bag. 2.Use the hood always on the lens but without a lens cap. There are two supplied caps in the box but none of them solve the problem.Anyone knows a solution for this? Thanks
Advertisement Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Hi agencal, Take a look here New Macro Elmar Hood and Cap Problem. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted July 12, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 12, 2014 It's the same hood and the same problem as with the older lens. The problem is that the metal claws which retain the hood in position will quickly wear the anodising on the lens so the best place for the hood is in the waste bin. You can buy a screw-in hood from the likes of Heavystar on eBay or else use the hood which came with the 50mm f2.8 collapsible Elmar. Finally, if you really want to use the hood which comes with the lens, leave it on all the time and buy a lens cap which will fit in or over the front of the hood. It's a pity that Leica, in changing the mechanicals of the lens to provide a worthwhile improvement, didn't bother to do anything about the hood. agencal Posted July 12, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted July 12, 2014 Thanks for the answer mark. I have looked to the 50mm 2.8 Elmar hood but it is not deep enough to prevent contrast loss. This lenx is very prone to flare. I have bought a screw moung hood from rodenstock bw ant it is not eveen deep enough to protect from flare. The original hood really solved the problem but i did not know that it takes the black paint of the lens off as a scratch. Now i will never use that fof sure. I think the best way is to use bw folding rubber hood with a 39mm ordinary cap even it is not deep enough. Thanks
algrove Posted July 12, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 12, 2014 agencal I think you are onto something with the rubber lens hood idea. Some aluminum after market hoods from China come with a lens hood cap which is good. I have found for other lenses that the Heliopan and/or Boyer (?) rubber lens hoods to be the strongest and longest in some sizes.
MarkP Posted July 12, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 12, 2014 Following advice on a thread here some time ago I purchased the 2.8/50 Elmar collapsible hood for the 90 Macro-Elmar. Works very well: compact, screws on so it doesn't get knocked off easily, and limits flare very well but obviously not as well as the very deep original hood. It is fine in most circumstances for what I've found to be a relatively flare resistant lens.

MarkP Posted July 12, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 12, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica 12550 lens hood (black, for 2.8/50 Elmar-M collapsible)
Nick_S Posted July 12, 2014 Share #8 Posted July 12, 2014 Leica 12550 lens hood (black, for 2.8/50 Elmar-M collapsible) I also use this lens hood with my original style Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4 lens. It is is much faster to set the lens up than having to reverse the original hood, when something unexpected appears. Nick
agencal Posted July 12, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted July 12, 2014 I don get the idea. How can Leica make a hood which damages the lens' painting and not solve this problem at the new version. By the way at the old version you could reverse and attach the hood to the lens and use the supplied lens cap with it.They put the same hood and the same lens cap in the box with the new version but this time you can not reverse mount the hood to the lens.So why do you put the reverse usable lens cap in the box.I really dont know where to use it.
mmradman Posted July 12, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 12, 2014 May I suggest to substitute original with long screw-in Heliopan lenhood, it is similar to elmar M 50mm lens hood mentioned above, lens cap can be attached to it. I use them on 50mm asph and 90mm AA and no vignetting even with wide rim Leica UV filters. In UK Teamwork Photo (London) stocks them.
microview Posted July 12, 2014 Share #11 Posted July 12, 2014 Leica 12550 lens hood (black, for 2.8/50 Elmar-M collapsible) If you wanted to use this circular hood then there's a current Leica push-fit cap in black anodised (in the old style of bright metal end caps). Curiously, I had this on a 35 2.8 Summaron and it was fine; but trying it on a v4 35 Summicron which I recently bought (with proper rectangular hood), there was a lot of vignetting witht the 12550. MarkP Posted July 12, 2014 Share #12 Posted July 12, 2014 Or just use the standard plastic Leica 39mm clip on lens cap which fits both the 12550 hood and the 90 Macro-Elmar without the hood fitted.
MarkP Posted July 12, 2014 Share #13 Posted July 12, 2014 I don get the idea. How can Leica make a hood which damages the lens' painting and not solve this problem at the new version. Exactly the same annoying problem as with the vented hood for the 28-50 MATE (at least the E49 which I have). I just stopped worrying about it after a while as the area of paint which is affected where the hood is attached is really quite small.
lct Posted July 13, 2014 Share #14 Posted July 13, 2014 I don't seem to recall what hood and caps are offered with the latest Macro-Elmar 90/4 but i've been using the 12575 hood on 90mm and 135mm lenses for 30+ years so i'm not sure to understand the problem exactly. This metal hood (pic) is one of the most effective at Leica's and it is easy to reverse for transportation, in which case any cap for 12575, 12585 or 12585H hood should fit on the reversed hood if memory serves. Otherwise Leica rubber hoods # 11250 for Tele-Elmarit-M 90/2.8 (on the left in the pic below) or # 12517 for Elmar-C 90/4 (in the middle) work fine as well. Beware that the hood cap # 11252 of the 11250 rubber hood needs an adapter ring # 11251 and that the filter thread of the 12517 rubber hood is not the same as that of M lenses. The 12517 rubber hood can be screwed without any problem in 39mm filters though and its hood cap # 14191 is the same as that of the Summicron-C 40/2. Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted July 13, 2014 Share #15 Posted July 13, 2014 The # 12518 rubber hood of the Summicron-C 40/2 can be used as well but it is less effective than other hoods referred to above and its filter thread is not the same as that of M lenses so better screw the 12518 hood in a 39mm filter like in the pic below (on the right). Hi As you have said the metal hood which comes with the macro elmar is the most effective one but there are two problems. 1.When you use the hood for sometime the claws on the hood damages the lens paint where it contacts the lens.So i do not whant paint scraches on my lens. 2.The new Macro Elmar lens design has been chanced by leica and the diameter of the aperture ring is now bigger. This doent allow to attach the hood reverse when in transport. So when you can not use it in reverse position you need to transport them seperatly. I am ok to put the lens on my bag with the hood on it as normal use position but this time there is not a cap in the box to use on it.
lct Posted July 13, 2014 Share #17 Posted July 13, 2014 A dozen of clip-on hoods like this have been used by two or three generations of photographers already (*) but i did not realise that the design of the aperture ring has changed. Thanks for sharing. The rationale of this move escapes me i must say. (*) 12452, 12466, 12504, 12521, 12538, 12575, 12580, 12585, 12585H, 12586, etc. Welcome, dear visitor! russell Posted July 16, 2014 Share #18 Posted July 16, 2014 I have the original style MEM. I just let the hood scratch the black colour and learn to live with it.

I received my new macro adapter today. Nice piece, but my M240 with new FW does not recognize the adapter without going into manual lens detection, even with the 90/4 #11633 lens on it. Once manually selected then it shows 90/4 lens on camera and I can use focus assist and peaking OK by hitting front #3 button on camera. Then I mounted the APO50 and same thing except it will only show 90/4 in EVF with that lens too. Tried the 75/2 and same thing. I will work with it tomorrow to see if I am doing something wrong. The 18-30mm selection comes in very handy.
tobey bilek Posted July 19, 2014 Share #20 Posted July 19, 2014 My 90 is bright chrome and I have not noticed scratehes. The shade is reversed and a cap goes over the shade. Is possible to screw in the collapsible rubber or plastic from the 90 2.8 thin tele elmar. I can not answer if it is the same as 40 2.0. It appears too long for a normal lens. It is molded on the rubber lip 112250 2.8 90 5.6 11252 cap is required. It is 1" long and just shy of a 2" opening. It came with my 90 2.8 28 years ago.
