Since yesterday, skaters crowd the Amsterdam Canals. This has not happened in about 15 years, so I thought to include this picture in my album, started last Friday.

More "picture-postcard" than really to my liking, but nice as a historical document.

Beautiful. Living in a climate of only two seasons, I am jealous. Just out of curiosity, are the boat owners concerned about damage from the ice?

kaeth

Absolutely. Talked about this with some people yesterday. Especially for those houseboats that are build on a concrete box, or are converted iron boats that go very deep and can not be lifted up through their shape. Ideally, owners should hack out an icefree zone around their home, but I have seen many boats where that has not been done. Problem is, nobody is used to this nor is really prepared anymore.

And sleeping on a houseboat is not possible now: the ice is moving and creaking: very noisy!

Cool indeed! Great for colors, clarity, contrast. Is the Elfstedentocht taking place? I once met a guy who competed, sounds awesome.

Unfortunately not. Thaw sets in on Sunday, and in some places in Friesland the ice is not thick enough.

15 cm's of good quality ice is needed. It just ain't there :(

Wonderful sight & excellently processed. I have a friend from NY that is originally from Amsterdam and was living in NY for many years. He sold his home in NY, bought a 36' sailboat & sailed back to Amsterdam. I was scheduled to accompany him, but a patient of mine infected me with a second bout of measles & that ended that adventure. When Stig got to Amsterdam (using my sextant), he sold his sailboat & lived on the canal in a huge barge for many years.
