  1. After having a monitor go bad on a just off warranty iMac a few years ago I vowed never to buy an iMac again. It's a risk that you take with iMacs that the monitor goes before the computer. Equally frustrating, I suppose would be the inverse, the computer going before the monitor. I recommend a Mac Mini or Mac Pro with an external monitor.
  2. It really depends on what you are shooting and how accurately you need to frame the shot. I use my 21 SEM frequently without a finder but I recognize there's more to the frame than what I will see thru the RF - I'll check the scene and note crop-ability on the edges as you can get some help in post processing if you're willing to crop the sloppy framing. If I really need to have accurate framing I use the Voigtlander 21/24 finder. It is excellent - compact and well built... And at a reasonable price.
  3. I keep one original drive which gets backed up daily to a 2nd drive. Then I keep one more offsite which I periodically bring in and back up to get the most recent work on it. I used to keep it in a bank safe deposit box. But I recognized that I only need off site backup in the event of a disaster of some sort at home (fire, flood, theft...) that destroys both main drives. Additionally, it is quite an effort to go to the bank, go through their security procedures, retrieve the hard drive take it home, back it up, make another trip to the bank, go through security again, replace it in a safe deposit box and go home... Only to repeat the process in a month or two. So, what I now do is keep the backup drive in my locker at my fitness club. It's secure as you must be a member with an encrypted keycard to enter the premises and additionally would need my locker combination (and have an improbable desire to steal my images). It's a commercial, hurricane-proof building, 2nd floor with fire protection systems so it is well protected from natural and man made disasters. And best of all, I can simply retrieve it after my regular workout and bring the updated drive back the next day.
  4. I abandoned iMovie years ago - as noted, it is horrible - and switched to Final Cut Pro. A huge improvement in usability, speed and stability. There is a learning curve, but you're going to have a learning curve with any video editing software. Invest the time up front and it will save you hours and hours later. Your MacPro should glide right through it.
  5. As gpwhite says, it is unlikely that TSA will examine your camera. I routinely take multiple cameras (battery inserted) and lenses and they have yet to handle any of my cameras. If you are chosen for a random residue check they will open your bag and will will wipe a swab across some contents of the bag. They are very careful and respectful of your belongings.
  6. What Jeff said... Plus you can lose 1, 2, sometimes 3+ stops by putting a filter on.
  7. If you are not careful using canned air, it will freeze and crack your sensor cover glass. Under no circumstances should you use the canned air inverted and keep plenty of distance from your sensor. It is actually a quite blunt instrument to use to clean a sensor with very little to gain over a bulb blower.
  8. I don't use Bridge. You can do everything in LR that you can do in Bridge and more. Nothing wrong with using Bridge if you have a system and are happy with it. I just find LR more flexible and easier to use. YMMV.
  9. . You can definitely revert to the original raw file if you have embedded it. Go to the develop module, Settings>Reset All Settings. I can't remember if the exported DNG retains the adjustment history, but it retains the adjustments and can be reset to the raw settings using the above process. It also retains ratings, keywords, flags, etc.
  10. I do this frequently. Import to my MacBook Air while traveling and edit on LR. I "Export as DNG" to an SD card, Dropbox folder or really any medium. The DNG format retains the editing history, keywords, ratings, etc. Then import the DNG files into your main catalog. Make sure you click on the "Embed Raw File" option to be able to revert to the original raw file if you want.
  11. Thanks. I discussed with Sherry Krauter and have sent it off to her. In addition to her excellent reputation, she's very responsive and her pricing is reasonable.
  12. I have a very tiny pinhole in 2nd curtain of my M3. I had noticed some partial over exposures and could not determine a pattern, so I shined a flashlight on the shutter and noticed a pinhole in the 2nd curtain. It should only affect a frame if I fail to advance the film (and reset the shutter) immediately after I take a shot. But, I obviously don't do that all the time. The question i have: Are replacement shutter curtains available for the M3? If so, where, how much and who is a good resource to perform the work? Thanks KDR
  13. And when it goes, put a wide angle lens on it, stop it down some and zone focus. The rangefinder went out of my Zeiss Ikon and it couldn't be fixed. I use a 21mm lens on it. At f/8 the hyper focal distance is 1.8 m. It has some limitations, but it still takes nice pictures.
  14. Same here. Using SEP2 with the latest version of Yosemite.
  15. Yes, it was the CC installer. I upgraded to a current MacBook Air and it works fine now.
