  1. This is what the CL does. First image is with high sensitivity, second image with low sensitivity. Your camera might do it the other way 'round for all I know. As I don't have much gravel on my desk, I used a structured mat. You can clearly see that the 'high sensitivity' lowers the threshold for the contrast detection. Usually, I set the sensitivity to 'low' unless I use a lens or a subject with a smallish contrast.
  2. I don't think FP will ever be as fast and accurate as the RF, even with poor eyesight. With a good rangefinder I have been able to focus accurately even with my reading glasses on. It's not only the coincidence of contours, but also that the image suddenly becomes very crisp. My eyesight has never been very good, as I have a somewhat pronounced coma.
  3. I presume that the sensitivity setting controls the depth of the range that's marked as sharp. You can easily visualize the effect when pointing at a gravel path or some similar structure at an angle, with the sensitivity set to different values. Depending on that setting, focus peaking might highlight just a thin line or a larger area of the gravel. When in a hurry, you can move the focus so that the subject of interest stands in the middle of the highlighted area.

  7. Using but one kind of film and but one lens for one single outing has several advantages. One, you will never have the wrong one at hand when you see a subject worth taking a photograph of. Two, the photographs of the same outing will have at least the looks provided by the film and by the field of view and the rendering of your lens in common. This prevents the set of photographs from falling apart into individual shots taken of things during that time. I find that having defined the focal length beforehand makes the framing of the shots of one outing more consistent.
  8. Lex, Thank you for showing this portrait here, and thanks to your colleague who kindly lent you his face and his time. I can understand that you enjoy the narrow depth of field of your lens (don't we all?) and your capability of accurately focusing the lens (no mean feat). However, I think that this choice of expression (the narrow depth of field) is a bit unfortunate for this image. The model's right eye and a narrow strip of skin on his left side is in focus, as well as part of his neck and then part of his shirt on the left shoulder. His left eye, eyebrow, nose and above all his mouth are blurred. In my mind these are all artefacts which detract the viewer from seeing your model's face as a complete whole. What we see is the narrow slice of reality depicted by the lens when we should concentrate on the face and expression of your colleague. That the right eye is in focus rather than the left one which is closer to the camera violates one of the rules many here insist on, but that's merely a convention which you may or may not follow. It does not actually make a big difference. In my opinion, the composition could also gain from a bit more room to the right and the bottom of the image.
  9. Olaf, I'm not quite comfortable with the lighting of this otherwise splendid portrait. The position and brightness of the strobe to your left produces two effects which I think could be corrected. One: the drop shadow of the ear is very prominent and its shape is difficult to understand. You already fixed the problem of the transparently lit ear, but I don't think you're there, yet. Two: the right side of the neck up to over the right ear is close to blown out. The shirt has more detail than the skin of the neck, which I find unfortunate. That the lower part of the left hand is in deep shadow I can live with, even if I think it would look better if it was not all that dark.
  10. Wirklich. Jahrhundert in Gebrauch blieben." (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotostudio)
  12. What is an improved focusing distance? How improved?
  13. Then there are M cameras that aren't M cameras.

  15. That argument is essentially valid, but it simplifies things a bit. Cameras that have lasted hundred of years don't yet exist, for obvious reasons. However, even the non-electrical and non-electronic ones might have issues that clocks don't used to have. Take leather, rubber or plastic parts: the prospect of them surviving for centuries is not that good, either.
