  1. I agree on the Hassy front. The Leica prices are keeping me from embracing a system I have been shooting for decades. Hasselblad on the other hand seems to have finally gotten over their funkiness and are releasing great gear that trounces value for the buck vs. the red dot. And don't get me wrong, I am a total Leica addicted nut-job, and will use my stuff until it burns out and dies - then maybe a switch.
  2. Wow. Was just pondering the same thing. Been shooting the Q since the 2nd day it was out. I have a Leica film/digital M system with lenses (too many) collected over the years. While it is yes, amazing to use a fixed lens on a full frame body that are perfectly matched and calibrated, and yes, it does take the guesswork out of carrying gear - it is the rendering of the lens and that sensor that blows me away...it's cinematic or something like that....light is captured amazingly from harsh to soft. The Q does get out of the way as well even when shooting it fully manual as I do save focus. I have to admit that AF is a blessing and curse. Still....using an EVF, though stunning on the Q, is like staring at a TV screen versus connecting with the subject though glass, and for that I could never give up my M system. Though as someone said, if I had to keep only one digital camera - the Q would be it. My portfolio of late includes 80% images from the Q. Confession - 28mm has been my go to prime for decades so that was not a challenge for me. The other primes I use about 30% of the time on the M is a 21, 35 and 75.
  3. I am just more and more impressed and appreciate the Q for what it does as I shoot....it gets out of the way, and the IQ is just spectacular. The 28mm has been a go to for me for some time on an M, however, if Leica introduced a Q40 - 40mm 1.4 fixed lens - that's it - game over for my M. Two Q bodies with optimized lenses at 28 and 40 is about all I need in a small bag for good...until the Q Monochrom 60 comes out heh heh.
  4. Wondering what the Q gang out there are using as your own b/w RAW conversion workflow on the Q. Not jpeg monochrome settings. Straight RAW DNG files from color to bw. If you could share, would be great - custom profiles included. I know a lot of this is personal taste, still, would be great to hear your "how" an "why"... I do own a Q, and prefer not to spend a lot of time in post. I find the RAW files incredible with really no need to do much in post other than a little boost or minus here and there while staying with color …bw another story. Seems a little crunchy to me at first via LR conversion, through that may be bc I like more fine grain, less "massively treated" bw files. Guess I am more an Acros 100 lover (like the M246 comes close with digital), but that does not matter... I am more curious as to your own. MB
  5. Q for sure for hanging around the neck and moving around, as in it does not leave your neck ever - not to mention I shot 3 complete projects recently with the Q. It's not a just bring for family unit....it's probably the best color and bw conversion I have seen from any Leica I have owned....and that's all of them - well not the 246 For me lately, it's the Q and M w/ a 50 lux and 21 SEM. I used to be the one that thought "just bring one lens and body to take the decisions and anxiety out of the way", and don't buy into that anymore...rather have options at places I have never been before...funny thing I rarely use the 50 for some reason. A super wide would be cool for beach and deco if you are into that - also a flash if you have one that can be used off hot-shoe....a la Martin Parr's work at beaches down there... MB
  6. + 1 Ona Bowery - canvas Q w/ handgrip, 2x batteries/cards, small notebook/pen, rocket blower, eyeglass case, wipes, mini-tripod. If bringing the SF 40, the eyeglass case leaves. If only the Q, just slinger on my shoulder and batteries in my pocket.
  7. I have this case, and if you let Paul know ahead of time that you are going to use a Thumbs Up (as I do - a must), he will make one for you with a modification to accommodate it. The case is great, a good value, and custom made. Keep in mind that it covers a lot of the rear, so the buttons must be lined up perfectly horizontally to the leather strip to get to them. I admire these half cases, and to be totally honest, I don't use mine anymore, as I found the Leica accessory hand grip and Thumbs Up together is the best combo to carry this baby around mated with a A&A silk cord strap from eons ago that can be worn over the neck, or as I use it, a wrist strap.
  8. Agreed on the dial and part of the unit overall. Fragile and could break apart without much effort IMO, It is for sure. As is the entire unit, seems fragile and not up for much rigorous use. I think mine is going back.
  9. How would they fix that? I just received mine, and to tell you the truth, the dials and most of the hit seem a bit fragile. Not a beater for sure.
  10. Thanks for the info. Interesting Wiki read. Have any of you seen any changes to the IQ vs. 1.0 in terms of color rendering, etc? Just wondering, as if they did introduce new math for demosaicing and optimizing shadow recovery, wonder if this would impact the overall rendering of the sensor from its pre-firmware upgrade output. Seems possible, and my hope would be that the Leica folks would know not to mess with a good thing! Probably my tortured mind seeing things. I did notice that WB is better indoors under decent light. Happy New Year as well!!
  11. For the life of me I cannot figure out how/what "Improvement of the image quality in lower ISO settings" means? Would that not be messing around with a sensor that is already delivering incredible IQ? I really am not an expert in this area by any means, just concerned that if this "remaps" or in some way impacts the sensor from it's original output? I shot some today with the new firmware, but the light was so bad I cannot make any informed judgement Guess I can try tomorrow....
  12. I was torn buying this camera a while back I was going to return it the next day I used the Q for a month straight to make sure I hated it I fell in love with it one body one lens = less anxiety for me (harkens back to my X1 - shot with my X1 for 2 years straight w/out going to my M8.) - IQ - raw files are amazing and need little to no post on my end - fast enough to take me through dawn and dusk - 28 opened up context to my way of seeing - EVF w/ OVF mount (how I shot the X1) - a portable tank I dunno - there is something about a fixed body/lens that very much appeals to me...
  13. Reset took care of it. Seemed stuck in video mode was the challenge - and I did not even put it into that mode at all. Oh well, that ol's Leica bug mystique
  14. Hey all thanks for the advice. What I found out is if I change the video setting to monochrome, the display will go b/w, however when setting video back to Standard, and changing still mode to mono, the display stays on color. PASM - yes, that is what it is set to - thought I did switch back and forth between each setting DURING exploring this bug. So for the meantime, either I have settings wrong, and video is overriding stills, or it's a bug. I will try a reset tonight, and let you know.
