Fall Sky In The Mountains

John,

I know it's a matter of personal taste, so I hope you don't mind me commenting, but I think the warm reds and oranges in the leaves in the foreground would shine through if you tweaked the levels a little.

Nice shot anyhow.

yes, this is a classic case of where the camera has exposed perfectly - for the sky. To my eye, the composition and colours are just great - and on your monitor at home it may look fine because your brightness is set higher or whatever, I don't know - but on my screen here things are not so good. Knowing that the D2 retains a lot of shadow detail, I think you could probably rebalance this and get away without too much noise creeping in. I hope you don't mind me saying all this, but it seems to me that often on the Forum we have very little constructive criticism, people are just too polite and a post gets ignored when actually the picture has a lot of merit, it just needs some tweaking.

Best regards (and I do like the picture a lot)

John

Thanks John and JR for your comments. In fact, I too wish that there was more constructive criticism about the photos posted and welcome comments on mine. Your comments help me understand how others see the photograph or want from the photograph. As you could tell I didn't photoshop the image before posting and generally don't photoshop the images. However, I think that you are correct and the shadows and foreground need a boost. I have both laptops that I use side by side right now and the image in the new HP tablet is a lot brighter. That's the one I used for posting this morning. Try this revised image and see if it views better.

Thanks again for your comments.

Well, just compared the reposted image on both laptops and its obvious that the image is less bright and colors less saturated on the older laptop versus the tablet. I can see that this is going to be a problem with further posts. I dislike images that have been photoshopped to the point that it approaches posterization. Right now, the image on the older laptop seems a little flat while the image on the new laptop approaches over saturation and being too bright for what I wanted to portray.

John,

I find the alterations in the second image quite subtle, but they certainly improve the scene. The forground has more depth and the clouds are that bit darker. I don't think it looks "Photoshopped" at all.

As pointed out already, the initial image showed the potential of the second. Good job in bringing out what you captured - especially the fact that you appear to have managed to leave the backdrop alone while selectively adjusting the foreground. The second image looks wonderful with it's realistic colors and overall subtlety on my regularly calibrated monitor.

Photoshop has been my darkroom for a few years now - with an extra benefit: my family doesn't have to put up with the smell anymore...
