ron_a Posted September 9, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can I use a 135 mm TeleElmar on my M8 and what would be the downside if used? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Advertisement Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Hi ron_a, Take a look here Use a 135 mm TeleElmar on a M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted September 9, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 9, 2008 Ron, Yes you can. The downside is that there are no frame lines for a 135 so you have to practice a bit. The rule of thumb is that the lens covers approx twice the size of the range finder patch. I use min occasionally on the M8 the results are great when you hit focus and framing. There are shots posted here where the 135 has been used, I suggest you do a search to see what you find. - Carl
jaapv Posted September 9, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2008 Pres the button of the lens release and overrotate it; that cannot harm the camera and is of no influence on focussing accuracy (these lenses have an internal cam) but it will bring up the 90 mm framelines, which are fairly good for 135 mm. Use a magnifier for accurate focussing. It is a d**m good lens:)
hsw Posted September 9, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 9, 2008 I've been using Jaap's method since he first described it. The 135 Tele-Elmar is one of only 3 lenses I keep with me at all times.
johnastovall Posted September 9, 2008 Share #5 Posted September 9, 2008 Or just get a Tewe 35-200 viewfinder which has 180mm FOV which is what the 135 is on the M8.
Shootist Posted September 10, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 10, 2008 Or buy a Elmarit f/2.8 with eyes/goggles and you don't have to over rotate or worry about framing. This shots was taken with one at Turner field. I had mine coded and adjusted.

For framing- certainly, there is also a pre-war Leica 200 mm viewfinder. But it is not very practical for a lens that has to be focussed precisely. I would appreciate it if you could send me the coding sequence on your lens. Thanks in advance. Volker
cbretteville Posted September 10, 2008 Share #9 Posted September 10, 2008 Volker, If you have a screw on the bayonet flange where the coding goes and your lens is reporting it self as a 90 Elmarit (Thin) it is because of the screw head causing the reader to register "black" from it and the the pen you've used might does not work properly. I've seen reports from people here that filling the screw head with white correction fluid (Tip-Ex) helps. - Carl
volkerhopf Posted September 11, 2008 Share #10 Posted September 11, 2008 Thanks Carl, I will try that.
