Leica Ball Head

Hi all,

Does anybody have the Leica Ball Head 18? I was thinking of getting the short version, though maybe I should get something like an Really Right Stuff BH-30 or FLM one instead? I'd like to avoid having to leaving an Arca-Swiss plate on the camera since I can't set it down as easily then.

Cheers!

I use arca-Swiss plates on all my cameras. Even an adapter that holds my iPhone. I bought a 50 mm plate on eBay for $10. I usually keep it in a pouch in the bag with the camera and only attach it if I'm using the tripod. That way it's not in the way setting it down most of the time.

I bought the Leica ball head and returned it. I have the RRS BH-25 instead. Mounted on the Leica tripod. Both are good. I like RRS heads and have 3 of them.

I ended up picking up the short version of the Leica ball head 18 today from the Leica store. It's very well made and of course, looks great too. Very stable - no creep when locking (something my Sirui tends to do). I thought it might be annoying to screw in all the time, but seems to be a non-issue. The mount has a nice solid ring to grip when screwing in. No independent panning plate, similar to the RRS BH-25, but I figure I could add one later if need be (I have taken all of 0 panoramas in my life thus far). The RRS pocket pod can fit a 1/4" base, but unfortunately their travel clamp needs another screw / adapter. I've opted for trying out the Kirk 3/8" to 1/4" male to male stud which I think should work well.

Sounds like you found a really good solution for you. Congrats. I've standardized on Arca Swiss on all cameras and tripods. It's easier for me to never worry about incompatiblity. It is slightly more weight, but it's worth it to me. As I said before, I only attach the AS plate to the Q when I want to use it in the tripod. Typically night or water photography. I have "L" plates on my other cameras.
